Chapter 5: The Memory They Buried

The footsteps above us stopped.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It was strange how fear could make a room feel frozen.

A few minutes earlier, I had been angry.

At Caroline.

At Daniel.

At every lie that had been placed on my shoulders.

But now?

Now I was only trying to understand one thing.

Who was inside my house?

And why did everyone else seem to know more about my life than I did?

Daniel motioned toward the hidden door.

“We need to move.””

I didn’t move.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“I’m done following people who refuse to explain anything.””

Caroline looked at me.

“Please.””

I turned toward her.

“Did you know I had a daughter before Lily?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“Did you know Daniel was alive?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“Did you know someone was living inside my walls?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“Then you don’t get to tell me what to do.””

Emma looked between us.

Then she quietly said:

“Daddy, we have to hide.””

I looked down at her.

“Why?””

Her small voice trembled.

“Because he gets angry when people remember.””

That sentence changed everything.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who gets angry?””

Before he could answer, the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

A second later, Lily screamed from the hallway.

“Daddy!””

I ran.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t care about the secrets anymore.

My daughter was outside.

I crawled through the passage and reached the bedroom.

Lily was standing near the doorway.

A man was holding her.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Older.

Wearing a dark jacket.

His hand was over Lily’s mouth.

My entire body reacted before my brain did.

I grabbed a lamp from the nightstand and swung.

The man let go.

Lily fell into my arms.

I pulled her behind me.

“Who are you?””

The man stepped back.

And then I saw his face.

I knew him.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

A memory.

A hospital hallway.

A doctor’s coat.

A voice saying:

“Mr. Carter, your wife made the right choice.””

My vision blurred.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Ryan.””

My stomach dropped.

“Doctor?””

He nodded.

“Good.””

He looked almost relieved.

“You’re remembering.””

Caroline came running.

When she saw him, all the color drained from her face.

“Dr. Miller.””

He smiled.

“Caroline.””

Daniel appeared behind me.

The second he saw the doctor, his expression turned murderous.

“You.””

Dr. Miller sighed.

“This was always going to happen.””

I held Lily tighter.

“Someone explain.””

Dr. Miller looked at me.

“You really don’t remember anything.””

“No.””

He studied my face.

“Then perhaps it’s time.””

Caroline stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Dr. Miller ignored her.

“Eight years ago, you discovered something.””

“What?””

He smiled slightly.

“A secret about your own family.””

I frowned.

“My family?””

He nodded.

“You were investigating Daniel.””

Daniel looked furious.

“That’s a lie.””

Dr. Miller turned toward him.

“You should have left when you had the chance.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What was he hiding?””

Daniel looked away.

That scared me.

Because Daniel had been desperate to tell me the truth.

Now he looked afraid.

Dr. Miller continued.

“You found evidence that Emma was being used.””

“Used by who?””

He looked at Caroline.

Nobody answered.

Then Lily whispered:

“Mommy said Emma was dangerous.””

Everyone froze.

Caroline turned sharply.

“Lily.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Lily looked confused.

“She said Emma would make Daddy leave us.””

I looked at Caroline.

The woman I married.

The mother of my child.

The person who had hidden another child in our house.

“Did you say that?””

Caroline started crying.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Emma.

“Of losing you.””

Emma stepped backward.

“I’m not dangerous.””

The sadness in her voice broke something inside me.

I knelt beside her.

“I know.””

Dr. Miller watched quietly.

Then he said:

“Ryan, you need to understand something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“You were never supposed to remember.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Why?””

He reached into his pocket.

And pulled out an old medical file.

My name was written across the front.

Ryan Carter.

Below it was a date.

Eight years ago.

And one sentence highlighted in red.

PATIENT REQUESTED MEMORY SUPPRESSION.

I stared at the words.

“That’s impossible.””

Dr. Miller shook his head.

“No.””

He handed me the file.

“It happened.””

I opened it.

The first page contained a signature.

My signature.

But the final page was different.

A note written by someone else.

A note that made my hands go numb.

Because it explained why I forgot Emma.

Why I forgot Daniel.

Why I forgot everything.

The note said:

“Ryan must never remember what he saw the night Emma disappeared.””

I looked up.

“What did I see?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You saw who took her.””

The hallway went silent.

And from behind Dr. Miller…

A woman stepped forward.

A woman I had never seen.

Until I looked at the photograph on the wall.

The same woman standing beside my younger self.

Emma’s mother.

She smiled at me.

May you like

And said:

“Hello, Ryan.””
