Chapter 2: The Door Nobody Knew About

I spent the next thirty seconds trying to convince myself I was still the same person who had walked into his house that morning.

A husband.

A father.

A man who understood his own life.

But everything I believed had cracked open.

I looked at Caroline.

She looked back at me.

And for the first time since I met her, I didn’t recognize the woman standing in front of me.

“Explain.””

My voice was quiet.

That scared her more than yelling would have.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I pointed toward the girl sitting on the floor.

“No more half answers. No more telling me to calm down. There is a child inside our house.””

The little girl hugged her knees.

Lily sat beside her.

My daughter, who had always been afraid of thunderstorms, was now comforting a stranger who had been hiding behind her wall.

Caroline looked at both girls.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence was an answer.

I walked toward the vent opening.

Behind the broken cover was a narrow passage.

Not a pipe.

Not a space for wires.

A passage.

A person had built this.

I grabbed my flashlight.

“Ryan, wait.””

I turned.

“Why?””

Caroline looked terrified.

“Because you don’t know what’s on the other side.””

I stared at her.

“You do.””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

I had spent years trusting her.

And she had been standing in our kitchen, watching me search for missing food while someone hid inside our walls.

I crawled into the opening.

The space was narrow.

The air smelled old.

Dust filled my lungs.

The flashlight beam moved across scratched wood, blankets, empty water bottles, and small toys.

Someone had been living here.

Not hiding for a few hours.

Living.

Behind me, Caroline whispered:

“Ryan.””

I kept moving.

“Who is she?””

No answer.

I turned my head.

“Who is that girl?””

Caroline’s voice cracked.

“I don’t know what to tell you.””

“That’s impossible.””

I reached the end of the passage.

There was a small hidden door.

Painted the same color as the wall.

Almost invisible.

A door inside a wall.

I touched the handle.

Locked.

I looked back.

“Caroline.””

She didn’t respond.

“Who locked this?””

Her silence followed me into the darkness.

Then something happened.

A sound.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Careful.

From the other side.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

My flashlight shook.

Someone was behind the door.

Someone alive.

I heard Caroline crawl closer.

“Ryan, move away.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because they weren’t supposed to still be here.””

My heart dropped.

“Who?””

She covered her mouth.

The little girl behind me started crying.

“No.””

I turned.

She was staring at the door.

Her whole body trembled.

“No, no, no.””

I crouched beside her.

“What is it?””

She grabbed my sleeve.

“He’s awake.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Who is awake?””

She didn’t answer.

She only looked at Caroline.

And for the first time, the fear in her eyes wasn’t fear of being found.

It was fear of what would happen after.

Caroline stepped closer.

“Ryan, we need to leave.””

I stood.

“No.””

“Please.””

“No.””

I looked at the hidden door.

“I’m done running from secrets in my own house.””

I grabbed the lock.

I didn’t know what was waiting behind it.

But I knew one thing.

Whatever Caroline had hidden from me…

It had been hidden for a reason.

I forced the lock.

The metal cracked.

The door opened slowly.

A smell rushed out.

Old air.

Medicine.

And something familiar.

Something I couldn’t place.

Then my flashlight moved across the room.

A mattress.

A stack of photographs.

A child’s drawings.

And a wall covered with pictures of me.

My hands went numb.

There were dozens of them.

Me walking into work.

Me sitting at a restaurant.

Me holding Lily as a baby.

Pictures taken when I didn’t know anyone was watching.

Then I saw one photograph in the center.

A picture of me standing beside a woman I had never seen.

A woman who looked exactly like the little girl hiding behind my daughter’s wall.

And written underneath the photograph were four words.

Words that made Caroline collapse to the floor.

May you like

“My first family.””

Then the door behind us slammed shut.
