Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I couldn’t move.

My brain rejected what my eyes were seeing.

Because the woman standing in front of me was impossible.

Daniel had told me she was gone.

The photographs had made her look like a memory.

A piece of a life I never knew existed.

But she was standing ten feet away from me.

Alive.

Watching me.

“Who are you?””

The woman smiled sadly.

“Your wife.””

The room went silent.

Caroline looked like she had been punched.

Daniel looked furious.

And I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

“My wife?””

The woman nodded.

“Before Caroline.””

I looked at Caroline.

She looked away.

Again.

Always away.

“How many lies are there?””

My voice cracked.

Nobody answered.

The woman stepped closer.

“My name is Rachel.””

Emma whispered:

“Mommy.””

The sound was quiet.

But it destroyed me.

Emma ran forward.

Rachel caught her.

The little girl buried her face in her mother’s shoulder.

And for the first time since I found her, she looked safe.

Not hidden.

Not afraid.

Safe.

I watched them.

And something inside my head shifted.

A memory.

A flash.

Rachel laughing in a kitchen.

A baby crying.

A tiny hand holding my finger.

Then pain.

A bright hospital light.

A voice shouting.

The memory disappeared before I could grab it.

I grabbed my head.

Ryan.””

Caroline moved toward me.

I stepped away.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

Rachel looked at me carefully.

“You’re starting to remember.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel nodded.

“She deserves to.””

Rachel looked at Caroline.

“She was never going to tell you.””

Caroline whispered:

“I was trying to protect him.””

Rachel’s eyes hardened.

“No. You were trying to protect yourself.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Eight years ago, Emma disappeared.””

She touched her daughter’s hair.

“I thought she was dead.””

Emma held onto her.

“But then you found her.””

Rachel nodded.

“Not me.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Him.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“I found her because Ryan helped me.””

My chest tightened.

“Why would I help you?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because you loved her.””

She pointed at Emma.

“You loved your daughter.””

A painful silence followed.

“Then why don’t I remember?””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Because after you found Emma, you discovered something.””

“What?””

She looked at Dr. Miller.

The doctor looked uncomfortable for the first time.

Rachel said:

“You discovered Dr. Miller wasn’t helping us.””

Everyone looked at him.

Dr. Miller sighed.

“This is getting dramatic.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You erased his memories.””

Dr. Miller shrugged.

“He agreed.””

I looked at the file in my hand.

“My signature.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Rachel answered.

“Because you thought forgetting would keep Lily safe.””

I froze.

“Lily?””

Rachel nodded.

“You found out the person who took Emma was connected to Caroline.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at my wife.

“No.””

Caroline started crying.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“Tell me that’s not true.””

She couldn’t.

That was the worst part.

She couldn’t lie anymore.

Rachel spoke softly.

“Caroline wasn’t the person who took Emma.””

I exhaled.

A small moment of relief.

Then Rachel continued.

“But she knew who did.””

I looked at Caroline.

“Who?””

Caroline’s tears fell.

“I was scared.””

“Who?””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Your father.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

My father.

A man who had been dead for six years.

A man who raised me.

A man I remembered as kind.

As gentle.

As someone who taught me how to ride a bike.

“No.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.””

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He wasn’t the man you thought he was.””

I looked around the room.

Everyone had known.

Everyone except me.

My entire life had been built around a secret.

Then Lily spoke.

Her small voice cut through everything.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was holding something.

A piece of paper.

“Grandpa gave me this.””

My blood froze.

“Grandpa?””

She nodded.

“He said I should give it to you when you found Emma.””

I slowly took the paper.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Inside was a message.

Written in my father’s handwriting.

Only six words.

Six words that made every person in the room go silent.

*“Ryan, if you remember, run.””*

And underneath it was one final sentence.

May you like

A sentence that made Rachel cover her mouth.

*“Because Caroline was never the real enemy.””*
