Chapter 10: The Night Everything Changed

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

*If you are the man who raised her, then you need to know what really happened the night Rachel died.*

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

Lily stared at me.

“Dad?””

I looked up.

She saw my expression.

She knew immediately.

“What does it say?””

I folded the letter.

Too quickly.

A mistake.

Because she noticed.

“Why did you hide it?””

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

Her voice wasn’t angry.

It was hurt.

And somehow that was worse.

I looked at Karen.

She looked away.

Michael stood silently near the window.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except Lily.

Again.

“I think we need to read this together,” I said.

Lily nodded.

“Okay.””

I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was the same.

Emily’s.

But the words felt like they were written directly into my chest.

Daniel,

If this letter reaches you, then I am gone, and you have become the person I hoped Lily would have in her life.

I stopped.

Lily looked confused.

“Daniel?””

I looked at her.

“I’m Daniel.””

Her eyes widened.

“You knew about this?””

“No.””

“Then why is it addressed to you?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

I continued.

You don’t know me well. Maybe you never will. But I know what kind of person you are because Lily talks about you.

My breathing stopped.

Lily whispered:

“She talked about you?””

I kept reading.

She tells me about the man who fixes her broken toys. The man who makes pancakes on Saturdays. The man who sits outside her bedroom when she has nightmares because he thinks she doesn’t notice.

My hand trembled.

Because those weren’t big moments.

Those were ordinary moments.

The ones nobody takes pictures of.

I know you may think you are just helping.

But please understand something.

You are already her father.

I couldn’t continue.

The room became blurry.

Lily reached for the letter.

“Let me see.””

I handed it to her.

She read silently.

Then tears fell.

“She knew.””

I nodded.

“She knew you loved me.””

Nobody spoke.

After a moment, Lily continued reading aloud.

There are things you need to know about Rachel.

My heart tightened.

She loved Lily more than anything. But she was afraid. She was surrounded by people who convinced her that love wasn’t enough.

Lily looked at Karen.

Karen lowered her head.

The night Rachel died was not as simple as everyone told you.

The room froze.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Because that night was the one memory I had spent years trying not to revisit.

The hospital lights.

The smell of disinfectant.

Rachel’s hand in mine.

The doctor’s expression.

The moment I became a single parent.

I continued.

Daniel, Rachel did not want to leave Lily behind.

My eyes burned.

I had never doubted Rachel loved our daughter.

But I had always wondered if she was at peace when she left.

She was trying to tell you something.

I stopped.

“What?”” Lily whispered.

I kept reading.

She knew someone had interfered with the adoption process.

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?”” Michael asked.

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Karen looked terrified.

But Emily’s words continued.

She found documents proving that her mother had changed important papers without her knowledge.

The room went silent.

Rachel’s mother.

The person Karen had just accused.

Rachel planned to expose the truth.

But before she could, she became sick.

I stared at the page.

Then something hit me.

A memory.

One I had buried.

The night before Rachel died.

She had grabbed my hand.

She had been weak.

But awake.

“Daniel,” she had whispered.

“I need you to promise me something.””

I had leaned closer.

“What?””

“Protect Lily.””

I had smiled sadly.

“I will.””

“No.””

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Promise me you’ll protect her from people who say they love her.””

At the time, I thought she was afraid of losing her.

I thought she was confused because of the illness.

Now…

Now I wasn’t sure.

Lily looked at me.

“You remember something.””

I nodded slowly.

“I do.””

“What?””

I looked at the letter.

“Your mother knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That someone was trying to control your life.””

The room went quiet.

Then Karen suddenly stood.

“I need to tell you something.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“I should have said this years ago.””

“Say what?”” Lily asked.

Karen took a breath.

“Your grandmother didn’t just remove Emily from your life.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

“She tried to remove Daniel too.””

The silence was immediate.

Lily stared.

“What?””

Karen nodded.

“After Rachel died, she wanted custody.””

I felt sick.

“But why?””

“Because she believed she knew what was best.””

Lily laughed bitterly.

“So everyone just decided my life for me?””

No one answered.

Because she was right.

Karen continued.

“She tried to convince the court that Daniel was not your real family.””

Lily looked at me.

“But he was.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

I looked down.

Because the answer was painful.

“Because I fought.””

She looked at me.

“For how long?””

“Years.””

Her eyes widened.

“Years?””

I nodded.

“There were hearings. Interviews. Investigations.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I swallowed.

“Because you were a child.””

She looked away.

“I’m not a child anymore.””

“I know.””

That night, after everyone left, Lily stayed.

She sat on the floor of my living room.

The same place where she used to build blanket forts.

The same place where she watched cartoons every Saturday morning.

“You really fought for me?””

I sat beside her.

“Yes.””

“Even though you could have walked away?””

I looked at her.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“You were never something I could walk away from.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“I’m sorry about yesterday.””

I sighed.

“Me too.””

“Why?””

“Because I should have told you more.””

She looked at me.

“And I should have seen more.””

We sat there quietly.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

A message.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She turned the phone toward me.

A number.

No name.

May you like

One sentence.

*I know you found Emily’s letter. Stop looking for answers you won’t survive.*
