Chapter 3: The Price of a Dream

Lily sat at the kitchen table for almost ten minutes without saying a word.

The papers were spread out in front of her.

Numbers.

Dates.

Signatures.

Proof of years she never knew existed.

Finally, she looked at me.

“You paid for this?””

I nodded.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it wasn’t a gift I wanted you to feel guilty for receiving.””

She looked down.

“But you said we couldn’t afford the California trip.””

I took a breath.

“There’s a difference between not being able to afford something and choosing what matters most.””

Her face crumpled.

“Dad…”

Daniel quietly stepped back.

For the first time, I noticed how uncomfortable he looked.

Not because he was angry.

Because he knew.

He knew the truth.

Lily looked at him.

“Did you know?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Her eyes widened.

“You knew he paid my tuition?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me think…”

Her voice broke.

Daniel sat down.

“Lily, I never wanted you to feel like you had to choose between us.””

“But I did.””

The words came out quickly.

“I chose you yesterday.””

She looked at me.

“I stood next to you and told you I wanted someone else.””

I didn’t say anything.

Because I didn’t want her apology to be because she discovered the money.

I wanted her to understand the years.

The ordinary moments.

The love that existed before anyone noticed.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“What are you sorry for?””

She wiped her tears.

“For making you feel like you weren’t my dad.””

That sentence hurt more than yesterday.

Because it was the truth.

“I never needed a photo to prove it, Lily.””

She cried quietly.

“I should have taken one.””

I smiled sadly.

“Maybe.””

She looked toward the refrigerator.

“All those pictures…”

“Yes.””

“You kept every single one?””

“Of course.””

“Even the ugly ones?””

“Especially the ugly ones.””

A small laugh escaped her.

The first one in hours.

Then she became serious again.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the tuition?””

I looked away.

Because the answer was not simple.

Because telling her meant admitting how much I had given.

And I never wanted love to become a debt.

“When your mother and I got married, I promised myself something.””

“What?””

“That you would never feel like a burden.””

Her eyes filled again.

“You weren’t supposed to know how many things I gave up. You were supposed to know you were loved.””

The kitchen became quiet.

Then Lily reached across the table.

She grabbed my hand.

The same hand that had held hers crossing streets.

The same hand that had signed school forms.

The same hand that had fixed broken toys at midnight.

“I thought yesterday was just a picture,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“But it wasn’t.””

She shook her head.

“I made you feel replaceable.””

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.

I glanced down.

A message.

From the university.

My expression changed.

Lily noticed.

“What is it?””

I stared at the screen.

The email I had been waiting for.

The one that could either change everything…

Or destroy the secret I had protected for years.

Because the university wasn’t contacting me about her tuition.

They were contacting me about the name on her original adoption paperwork.

And that name wasn’t mine.

It was someone she had never heard before.

May you like

Someone who had been searching for her.

Someone who had just found us.
