Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything
Lily stared at the photograph for so long that Michael finally whispered her name.
“Lily?””
She didn’t respond.
Her fingers traced the edge of the picture.
It showed her at around four years old.
A tiny child with messy hair and a missing front tooth.
I recognized her instantly.
Even younger.
Even before I entered her life.
But the person standing beside her…
I didn’t recognize.
A woman.
Young.
Smiling.
Holding Lily’s hand.
“Who is she?”” Lily asked.
Her voice was barely audible.
Michael looked at the photo.
“She was someone who loved you.””
Lily looked up.
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
Because there was something he wasn’t saying.
“Her name was Emily.””
The name meant nothing.
Until I saw Lily’s expression.
Because she knew it.
“How do I know that name?””
Michael went quiet.
“What?””
Lily stood up.
“How do I know that name?””
Michael looked at her.
“You don’t remember?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Then she turned toward the window.
Toward me.
I had stepped inside because I couldn’t sit in the car anymore.
“Dad?””
I froze.
Because I knew that look.
The look of someone searching through broken pieces of a memory.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She held up the photo.
“Do you know Emily?””
My heart stopped.
I had never heard that name.
Not once.
But Michael’s expression told me something was wrong.
“You didn’t tell him,” Michael said.
Lily looked between us.
“Tell him what?””
I stepped closer.
“Michael.””
He stood.
“I didn’t think it mattered anymore.””
“What doesn’t matter?””
Nobody answered.
The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.
Too quiet.
Finally, Michael looked at me.
“You weren’t the first person who tried to save her.””
My face hardened.
“I never said I was.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“That’s the thing. You never knew.””
Lily looked confused.
“Dad?””
I looked at her.
“Lily, I don’t know what he’s talking about.””
Michael sighed.
“Before Rachel met you…”
He stopped.
Then continued.
“There was someone else.””
Lily stared.
“Someone else?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at the photo.
“Emily.””
The name hung in the air.
“She was your mother’s closest friend.””
Lily frowned.
“My mom’s friend?””
Michael nodded.
“She was the person who took care of you when Rachel couldn’t.””
I felt a strange coldness move through me.
Because I knew Rachel had struggled after Lily’s birth.
I knew she had needed help.
But I had never heard about Emily.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”” Lily asked.
Michael looked at her.
“Because she died.””
The world seemed to pause.
Lily’s face changed.
“When?””
“Shortly after you turned five.””
She covered her mouth.
“Why don’t I remember?””
Michael’s voice softened.
“Because your mother thought forgetting would hurt less.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The little girl who had always hated goodbyes.
The little girl who panicked whenever someone left the room.
Suddenly, a piece of her made sense.
“Wait,” Lily whispered.
She looked at the photo again.
“I knew her.””
Michael nodded.
“You loved her.””
A tear fell down Lily’s cheek.
“I don’t remember.””
“That doesn’t mean it wasn’t real.””
She sat down.
I watched her struggle.
Yesterday, she was dealing with one painful truth.
Today, another one had appeared.
Her entire childhood was changing.
Then Michael looked at me.
“And there’s something else.””
I already knew I didn’t want to hear it.
“What?””
He reached into his bag again.
This time, he pulled out a folded document.
“I found this when I was looking through old records.””
He placed it on the table.
Lily looked at it.
“What is it?””
Michael looked at me.
“It’s about your adoption.””
My stomach tightened.
“Michael…”
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“She deserves to know.””
Lily opened the paper.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Her expression slowly changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Something worse.
Hurt.
“Dad…”
I couldn’t speak.
She held up the document.
“Why does this say you weren’t supposed to be my legal guardian?””
The coffee shop disappeared around me.
The noise.
The people.
Everything.
Because the one secret I had never told Lily…
Was finally in her hands.

And she was about to learn that the day I became her father…
Was not the day she thought it was.
