Chapter 8: The Letter in the Box

The old wooden box sat on my kitchen table three hours later.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

It was strange how something so small could hold so much weight.

Emily’s box.

The person Lily barely remembered.

The person who apparently knew parts of her childhood that even I didn’t know.

Michael had brought it over after receiving the call.

He said it had been kept by a family friend for years.

Waiting.

“For what?”” Lily asked.

Michael looked at her.

“For when you were old enough.””

Lily stared at the box.

“Why now?””

“Because they finally found you.””

The answer didn’t satisfy her.

I could tell.

She had spent the last twenty-four hours discovering one secret after another.

She didn’t know who to trust anymore.

I sat beside her.

“You don’t have to open it.””

She looked at me.

“What if I want to?””

“Then open it.””

“What if it changes everything?””

I smiled gently.

“Everything has already changed.””

She looked down.

Then slowly opened the box.

Inside were small things.

A bracelet.

A dried flower.

A few photographs.

And an envelope.

Her name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Lily’s fingers trembled.

“Who wrote this?””

Michael answered.

“Emily.””

She stared at the envelope.

Then looked at me.

“Should I read it?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She opened it.

At first, she read silently.

Then tears started falling.

“Lily?””

She didn’t answer.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered.

“She knew about you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She handed me the letter.

“I want you to read it.””

I hesitated.

But she nodded.

So I did.

The handwriting was delicate.

The words were simple.

But they carried years of love.

Dear Lily,

If you are reading this, it means you are old enough to understand that families are not always created the way people expect.

Some people enter our lives through blood.

Some through choice.

And some through moments when we need someone most.

I stopped reading.

My throat tightened.

I continued.

When I met you, you were a little girl who thought everyone eventually leaves.

I hope you learned that isn’t true.

I hope someone stayed.

My hands froze.

Lily noticed.

“Keep going.””

I swallowed.

Your mother loves you more than anything.

Michael loves you, even if he doesn’t always know how to show it.

And there is someone else.

Someone who came into your life after I wrote this.

I looked up.

My heart started beating faster.

Lily noticed.

“Someone else?””

I continued.

His name is Daniel.

My breath stopped.

The room went quiet.

Lily looked confused.

“Daniel?””

I looked at Michael.

He looked just as shocked.

I don’t know what role he will have in your life.

I don’t know if he will become your father.

But I know one thing.

The people who choose you are the ones you should remember.

I stopped reading.

Nobody spoke.

Because the letter had somehow known.

Years before Daniel.

Years before my marriage.

Before everything.

It had mentioned him.

“How?”” Lily whispered.

Michael looked stunned.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the letter again.

There was more.

Lily, never let anyone convince you that love belongs only to one person.

Your heart is big enough to love many people.

But remember this.

The person who stays beside you during the ordinary days…

That person is the one who knows you best.

Lily covered her mouth.

Then she looked at me.

Not Daniel.

Not Michael.

Me.

“I was so horrible yesterday.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You were hurt.””

“I hurt you.””

I looked at her.

“You did.””

The honesty surprised her.

But I continued.

“And we’ll both remember that moment.””

She nodded.

“I don’t want to.””

“I know.””

“But maybe I need to.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s how we learn.””

For the first time, she smiled.

A small one.

The kind I remembered from when she was little.

Then Michael cleared his throat.

“There’s one more thing.””

We looked at him.

He reached into the box.

He pulled out another envelope.

This one was older.

Yellowed.

“My name is on this,” he said.

Lily frowned.

“What is it?””

Michael looked nervous.

“I never opened it.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily told me it was for you.””

He handed it to her.

Lily looked at the envelope.

Then at me.

“Should I?””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

The screen showed Rachel’s sister.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Are you with Lily?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Then she needs to know the rest.””

My stomach tightened.

“The rest of what?””

Another silence.

Then she said:

“The reason Emily disappeared from Lily’s life wasn’t because she died.””

I froze.

“What?””

Lily looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I couldn’t speak.

Rachel’s sister continued.

“She was forced to leave.””

The room went cold.

“By who?””

May you like

Her answer came quietly.

“By someone in your family.””
