Chapter 9: The Person Who Took Her Away

Nobody moved after the call ended.

Lily was the first to speak.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at the phone in my hand.

I wanted to tell her I didn’t know.

But I had learned something over the last two days.

Lies told with good intentions were still lies.

“I don’t know.””

Michael stood.

“Who was it?””

I looked at him.

“Rachel’s sister said someone in the family forced Emily to leave.””

His expression changed.

“Rachel knew?””

“I don’t know.””

Lily looked between us.

“My whole childhood is just secrets.””

Her voice cracked.

“I feel like everyone knew things except me.””

I sat beside her.

“I know.””

“No, Dad.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

Her eyes filled.

“I spent my whole life thinking I understood where I came from.””

She held up Emily’s letter.

“Now I find out there was another person who loved me.””

She looked at Michael.

“A father who left.””

Then at me.

“A father who wasn’t legally my father.””

Then at the box.

“Someone who disappeared.””

She wiped her tears.

“How many more things are there?””

I had no answer.

Because I was starting to wonder the same thing.

That evening, Rachel’s sister, Karen, came to our house.

She looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

The moment she saw Lily, she started crying.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Lily didn’t move.

“Tell me the truth.””

Karen nodded.

“I will.””

We sat in the living room.

The same room where Lily had watched movies as a child.

The same room where she had fallen asleep on my shoulder countless times.

Now it felt like a courtroom.

“Who made Emily leave?”” Lily asked.

Karen looked at her hands.

“Your grandmother.””

Lily froze.

“My grandmother?””

“Your mother’s mother.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Rachel’s mother.

A woman I barely knew.

She had passed away years ago.

“Why?”” Lily asked.

Karen looked at her.

“Because she believed Emily was becoming too important.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you knew your grandmother.””

Karen sighed.

“She wanted control over everything.””

Lily looked confused.

“But Emily was just helping my mom.””

“Yes.””

“Why would that matter?””

Karen’s eyes filled.

“Because Emily knew something.””

“What?””

Karen looked at me.

Then at Michael.

Then finally at Lily.

“She knew your mother was being pressured to give you up.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Lily’s voice was barely a whisper.

Karen continued.

“When you were little, your mother was struggling. She loved you, but she was exhausted. Your grandmother convinced her that someone else could provide a better life.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She wanted to give me away?””

“No.””

Karen leaned forward.

“She wanted help. There’s a difference.””

Lily looked down.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she was ashamed.””

I looked away.

Because I knew Rachel.

I knew she carried guilt.

But I never knew how much.

“Emily found out,” Karen said.

“And she fought.””

“For me?””

Karen nodded.

“She told your grandmother that you weren’t a problem to solve. You were a child who needed love.””

Lily started crying.

“She protected me?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Karen took a deep breath.

“She was threatened.””

The word hung there.

“Threatened how?””

“She was told if she didn’t leave, your grandmother would make sure she never saw you again.””

Lily covered her mouth.

“That’s why she disappeared?””

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Lily looked at the box.

“The letter…”

Karen nodded.

“She wrote it before she left.””

“Why didn’t she give it to me?””

“Because she thought she would come back.””

Everyone went quiet.

Then Karen whispered:

“She didn’t know that day would be the last time she ever saw you.””

Lily looked devastated.

But then something changed.

She picked up Emily’s second envelope.

The one nobody had opened.

Her fingers moved toward the seal.

“This one…”

She looked at us.

“This one is from her?””

Karen nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily opened it slowly.

Inside was one page.

One sentence was written in large letters.

Her eyes moved across it.

Then she dropped the paper.

I picked it up.

And my blood ran cold.

Because Emily’s final message wasn’t to Lily.

It was to me.

May you like

It said:

*“If you are the man who raised her, then you need to know what really happened the night Rachel died.””*
