Chapter 12: The Betrayal in the Family
Nobody spoke.
The name on the document sat between us.
Like a bomb waiting to explode.
Lily stared at it.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
Because the person who signed that document was someone I trusted.
Someone who had comforted Lily after Rachel died.
Someone who had told me she wanted to help.
Karen.
Lily looked at her aunt.
“Is this true?””
Karen didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Lily stepped back.
“You filed for custody?””
Karen’s face collapsed.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“Everyone says that.””
Her voice trembled.
“I can explain.””
She looked around.
“Then explain.””
Karen sat down.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Lily laughed.
A painful sound.
“Everyone says that too.””
Karen looked at me.
“Daniel, you need to understand.””
“No.””
My voice was colder than I expected.
“You need to understand.””
Karen looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
I picked up the document.
“You tried to take my daughter.””
“I thought I was saving her.””
“From me?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“From everything.””
Lily crossed her arms.
“Explain.””
Karen took a deep breath.
“After Rachel died, everyone was falling apart.””
She looked at Lily.
“You were so young.””
“I know.””
“Your father disappeared. Your mother was gone. Daniel was grieving.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“I was afraid.””
“So you decided I wasn’t safe?””
“No.””
“Then why file this?””
Karen wiped her tears.
“Because your grandmother convinced me.””
The room went quiet.
“She told me Daniel wasn’t ready. She told me he would eventually leave because he wasn’t your biological father.””
I looked away.
Because those words had haunted me.
Karen continued.
“I believed her.””
Lily stared.
“You believed her over him?””
Karen cried.
“I was wrong.””
The anger on Lily’s face didn’t disappear.
But something else appeared.
Disappointment.
“You were supposed to be my family.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“You don’t.””
She pointed at the document.
“Family doesn’t secretly decide your life.””
Karen lowered her head.
“You’re right.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Karen reached into her purse.
“I kept something.””
Everyone looked at her.
“A letter.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
Karen looked at Lily.
“Your mother.””
Lily froze.
“Rachel?””
She nodded.
“I found it after she died.””
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””
Karen looked ashamed.
“Because your grandmother told me not to.””
The room went silent again.
Lily took the letter.
Her hands shook.
She opened it.
Unlike Emily’s letter, this one looked rushed.
Written quickly.
Like someone running out of time.
She read silently.
Then she whispered:
“She knew.””
“What?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“She knew you would stay.””
My eyes burned.
She handed me the letter.
I read Rachel’s words.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I am gone.
I hate that you are having to face this alone.
I stopped.
Then continued.
Please don’t let anyone convince you that you are not Lily’s father.
My vision blurred.
Blood creates life. Love creates family.
I closed my eyes.
Because those words were everything I needed to hear twelve years ago.
I know people will question you.
They will say you are not enough.
But Lily does not need the person who shares her DNA.
She needs the person who shows up.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Lily touched my arm.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“She chose you.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Then she hugged me.
Not a polite hug.
Not a careful hug.
The kind she gave me when she was eight years old and scared of thunderstorms.
The kind that reminded me she was still my little girl.
After a long moment, she pulled away.
“I want to find out everything.””
I nodded.
“We will.””
“No more secrets.””
I looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone became silent.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman spoke.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“I heard you found Rachel’s letter.””
My grip tightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who knows what really happened the night Rachel died.””
I stood.
“Who are you?””
The woman sighed.
“I’m the reason Rachel never finished telling you the truth.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Lily looked at me.
“Who was it?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because I recognized the voice.
And I knew exactly who had just returned.
May you like
Someone I thought was gone forever.
Someone who had been waiting twelve years to tell their side of the story.
