Chapter 14: The Last Secret Rachel Kept
Rachel’s brother.
The name felt unfamiliar.
But Michael’s reaction told me everything.
He knew.
“You knew about him?”” I asked.
Michael looked away.
“I knew of him.””
Lily turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
Michael sat down slowly.
“It means he was around when I was with your mother.””
“Then why have I never heard of him?””
Nobody answered.
Because apparently, everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone thought they were protecting Lily.
And somehow, everyone forgot that the truth belonged to her.
“His name is Thomas,” Michael finally said.
Lily crossed her arms.
“Why would he want to hurt me?””
Eleanor answered.
“Because Rachel found out what he had done.””
“What did he do?””
Eleanor looked at the documents.
“He had been using your grandmother’s influence for years.””
“For what?””
“Money.””
The word was simple.
But it explained so much.
Rachel’s family had always appeared wealthy.
Always powerful.
Always respected.
But behind closed doors, things were different.
“Thomas was drowning in debt,” Eleanor continued.
“He convinced your grandmother that keeping control of the family’s assets was more important than anything else.””
I looked at the papers.
“And Lily?””
Eleanor’s face changed.
“She was the key.””
Lily went pale.
“What?””
“After Rachel died, your inheritance was placed into a trust.””
I felt sick.
“There was an inheritance?””
“Yes.””
Eleanor nodded.
“Rachel wanted Lily to have financial security.””
Lily looked stunned.
“And Thomas?””
“He wanted control of it.””
The room went silent.
“So all of this…”
Lily looked around.
“The adoption. The guardianship. Emily leaving. Dad fighting for me.””
Her voice broke.
“Was because someone wanted my money?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the horrible truth.
Not every betrayal comes from hatred.
Sometimes it comes from greed.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Where is Thomas now?””
She looked down.
“He knows you found out.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone froze.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A picture.
Of Lily.
Taken that morning outside the lawyer’s office.
My stomach dropped.
“He’s watching us.””
Lily saw the picture.
Her face changed.
“He followed me?””
I immediately stood.
“We’re leaving.””
But Eleanor stopped me.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“If he knows you found the documents, running won’t help.””
“Then what do you suggest?””
Eleanor looked at Lily.
“Make him think he still has control.””
Lily stared.
“You want me to lie?””
“No.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“I want you to finally do what your mother wanted.””
“What?””
“Choose your own life.””
That night, Lily and I sat together on the porch.
The same porch where she used to sit with a blanket and hot chocolate.
“I’m tired,” she said.
I looked at her.
“I know.””
“No, I mean…”
She stared at the street.
“I’m tired of being someone’s reason.””
I understood.
Everyone had looked at Lily and decided something.
A child to protect.
A responsibility.
A legacy.
A problem.
A prize.
But rarely just a person.
“I’m sorry,” I said.
She looked at me.
“For what?””
“For letting everyone else tell the story.””
She shook her head.
“You stayed.””
I smiled.
“That’s all I did.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“That’s everything.””
The next day, Lily agreed to meet Thomas.
Not because she trusted him.
Because she wanted answers.
The meeting took place at an old family property.
A house that had belonged to Rachel’s parents.
When Thomas arrived, he looked exactly like someone who believed he had already won.
He smiled.
“Lily.””
She didn’t smile back.
“You know who I am.””
“Of course.””
“Then tell me why.””
Thomas sighed.
“You’re young. You don’t understand complicated family matters.””
Lily’s expression hardened.
“I understand people hurting others for money.””
His smile disappeared.
“You’ve been talking to them.””
“Yes.””
He looked angry.
Not worried.
Angry.
“You should be careful who you trust.””
Lily stepped closer.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“That’s what everyone told me my whole life.””
Thomas stared.
“But the people I trusted were the ones who stayed.””
A flash of fear crossed his face.
Just for a second.
Then he recovered.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
Lily looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m involved in.””
She pulled out her phone.
Thomas noticed.
“What are you doing?””
“Recording.””
His expression changed.
“You can’t—”
“I can.””
She smiled slightly.
“Because unlike everyone else, I’m done keeping secrets.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“You think your father can save you?””
Lily didn’t move.
“No.””
She looked toward me.
Standing across the street.
“I think my family can.””
Thomas froze.
Then he whispered:
“You have no idea what your father did.””
My heart stopped.
Lily looked confused.
“What?””
Thomas smiled.
May you like
A cold smile.
“Ask him why Rachel was going to leave him.””
