Chapter 10: The Letter My Father Never Sent

The document trembled in Ethan’s hands.

I had never seen him look so broken.

Not when Daniel threatened his company.

Not when he discovered the contract that could destroy his future.

Not even when he learned Claire had been forced to betray him.

But this was different.

This wasn’t about money.

This wasn’t about a business.

This was about family.

“My father knew,” Ethan repeated.

His voice sounded empty.

“He knew Daniel was dangerous.””

Claire stood quietly beside us.

The office suddenly felt too small.

Too full of secrets.

I looked at the document again.

It showed years of communication between Daniel and Ethan’s father.

Messages.

Meetings.

Payments.

Evidence that Ethan’s father had known exactly what Daniel was doing.

“How could he hide this from you?”” I whispered.

Ethan didn’t answer.

He just stared at the papers.

“My entire life, I thought my father was protecting me.””

He laughed softly.

“But maybe he was protecting himself.””

I reached for his hand.

“Ethan.””

He pulled away.

Not from me.

From the pain.

“I spent years believing my father failed because he wasn’t careful enough.””

His eyes became wet.

“And now I find out he knew.””

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes silence was the only thing that respected someone’s heartbreak.

Finally, Claire spoke.

“There might be more.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She pointed at the documents.

“These records are incomplete.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Daniel wouldn’t keep something this dangerous without controlling the evidence.””

I frowned.

“So what are you saying?””

Claire looked at Ethan.

“I think your father left something behind.””

Ethan looked exhausted.

“I’m tired of finding things my family hid from me.””

I understood.

For years, Ethan had carried everyone else’s secrets.

Now he was drowning in his own.

But we didn’t have a choice.

We needed answers.

That night, we went to Ethan’s childhood home.

The house had been empty since his mother moved away years ago.

I watched him unlock the door.

His hand paused on the handle.

“You okay?””

He nodded.

But I knew him better now.

A simple “yes” didn’t always mean yes.

Inside, everything looked frozen in time.

Old photographs.

Old furniture.

A life that had ended but never really disappeared.

Ethan walked slowly through the hallway.

“My father used to say something.””

“What?””

He looked at a framed picture.

“‘The truth always survives. It just waits for someone brave enough to find it.’”

I looked at him.

“Sounds like something you would say.””

He smiled sadly.

“Maybe that’s where I got it.””

We searched through his father’s office.

Drawers.

Bookshelves.

Old files.

Nothing.

Hours passed.

Then Ethan stopped.

I looked up.

“What?””

He was staring at an old painting on the wall.

A picture of a mountain landscape.

“What?””

“My father hated this painting.””

I frowned.

“Then why was it hanging here?””

“That’s what’s strange.””

He walked closer.

He touched the frame.

Then pushed it.

A small click echoed.

The painting moved.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was an envelope.

Ethan froze.

My heart started beating faster.

“Open it.””

He stared at the envelope.

His name was written on the front.

Not his father’s handwriting.

His mother’s.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a letter.

A letter that had been waiting for him.

Ethan read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What does it say?””

He handed it to me.

My hands shook as I read.

*Ethan,*

*If you are reading this, then Daniel has already started destroying the lives of the people around him.*

*I’m sorry.*

*I wanted to protect you from this world.*

*But protection became another kind of lie.*

I looked at Ethan.

His father’s words continued.

*Daniel did not destroy our family because of money. He destroyed us because he was afraid.*

*Your father and I discovered the truth about him years ago.*

*He didn’t build his success. He stole it.*

*But we found something worse.*

My eyes moved faster.

*Daniel was not working alone.*

I stopped.

My stomach tightened.

*Someone inside our family helped him.*

I looked at Ethan.

He was staring at the letter.

The final lines shook both of us.

*I never told you because the person who betrayed us was someone you loved.*

*I thought keeping you away from the truth would protect your heart.*

*I was wrong.*

*I should have trusted you.*

*The person who helped Daniel is someone you still believe is innocent.*

The letter ended there.

No name.

No explanation.

Just a warning.

Someone we trusted.

Someone close.

Ethan sat down.

“This is impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who could it be?””

He didn’t answer.

Because there were too many possibilities.

Then his phone rang.

The screen showed a number we didn’t recognize.

Ethan answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke.

A voice that made his entire body freeze.

“Ethan.””

He stood.

“Who is this?””

The voice was older.

Calm.

“Your father wanted you to find the letter.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“How do you know about that?””

A pause.

“Because I helped him hide it.””

My heart stopped.

“Who are you?””

Another pause.

Then the stranger said:

“I’m the person your father trusted most.””

The call ended.

Ethan stared at the phone.

And then a message appeared.

A location.

May you like

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want the rest of the truth.*
