Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside Our Circle

The name left my mouth like a confession.

“Claire.””

Ethan stared at me.

“Claire?””

I nodded slowly.

“No.””

The disbelief in his voice was immediate.

“She wouldn’t.””

I wanted to say the same thing.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to tell him the photo was fake.

A trick.

Another one of Daniel’s games.

But I knew Claire.

And that was what scared me.

Because Claire wasn’t someone Daniel could easily manipulate.

She was loyal.

Smart.

Careful.

She had helped Ethan build his company from the beginning.

She was the person who stayed late when everyone else went home.

The person who defended him when people doubted him.

The person who found the missing clause that saved his company.

The person who knew everything.

“How did Daniel get this picture?”” Ethan whispered.

I looked at the message.

Then at him.

“Maybe he didn’t.””

A painful silence filled the car.

Ethan started the engine.

“We need to talk to her.””

We found Claire at the office.

She was working late.

Just like always.

When she saw us, she smiled.

“Hey. I was just about to call you.””

Ethan walked in.

No smile.

No greeting.

Her expression changed.

“What happened?””

He placed the phone on her desk.

Claire looked at the picture.

And froze.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Ethan saw it.

“So it’s true.””

Claire looked away.

“I can explain.””

My heart sank.

Those four words.

The words every person says when the truth is already obvious.

“Explain what?”” Ethan asked.

Claire sat down.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

“What did you do?””

She covered her face.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

Ethan’s voice broke.

“Daniel almost destroyed my life.””

“I know.””

“And you helped him?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I never wanted him to win.””

“Then why?””

Claire looked at me.

And I saw tears in her eyes.

“Because of my brother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She took a shaky breath.

“My brother worked for Daniel years ago.””

Ethan went quiet.

“What happened?””

“He discovered what Daniel was doing.””

The room became silent.

“Then Daniel threatened him.””

Claire looked down.

“He disappeared.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“You mean…”

She nodded.

“My brother vanished because of Daniel.””

Ethan’s anger softened slightly.

“But what does that have to do with you?””

Claire looked at him.

“Daniel found me.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

My heart sank.

The timing.

Everything suddenly connected.

“The same time my mother got sick.””

Claire nodded.

“He knew Ethan would have to make a choice.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What did he threaten you with?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The answer was already there.

Her family.

“My brother is alive.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“Daniel has him.””

The room went silent.

“He told me if I didn’t give him information about Ethan’s company, he would disappear forever.””

Ethan looked devastated.

“You should have told me.””

Claire shook her head.

“I couldn’t.””

“You could have trusted me.””

She looked at him.

“I was scared.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Because the truth was painful.

Claire had betrayed Ethan.

But she had also been trapped.

And that was exactly how Daniel operated.

He didn’t just hurt people.

He controlled them.

Ethan turned away.

“Did you tell him about the evidence?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because I thought it was the only way to get my brother back.””

“And did you?””

She started crying.

“No.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

Claire looked at us.

“Daniel lied.””

Of course he did.

He always did.

“He never planned to release my brother.””

Ethan clenched his fists.

“So everything you gave him…”

Claire nodded.

“Was for nothing.””

Nobody moved.

Then Ethan picked up his phone.

“We need to find your brother.””

Claire looked shocked.

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because he’s a victim too.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You still want to help me?””

Ethan was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“I’m angry.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

“But I know what it feels like to be trapped by Daniel.””

Those words changed everything.

Because Ethan understood.

He had lived it.

That night, we discovered something else.

Daniel wasn’t acting alone.

The police found hidden accounts.

Fake companies.

Secret payments.

And one name kept appearing.

A name connected to Daniel’s operation.

A name that made Ethan’s face go pale when he saw it.

Because it wasn’t just an employee.

It wasn’t just a partner.

It was someone from his own family.

Someone who had known about Daniel for years.

Someone who had allowed everything to happen.

And when Ethan read the name on the document, he whispered:

“My father knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the paper.

“My father knew Daniel was dangerous.””

A cold silence fell.

“And he never told me.””

Because the final secret wasn’t about Daniel anymore.

May you like

It was about the people who had protected him.

And the truth about Ethan’s family was about to change everything.
