Chapter 7: The Night We Stopped Running

The sound of Daniel’s voice outside my mother’s house was something I would never forget.

Not because he shouted.

Not because he threatened us.

But because he sounded calm.

Almost polite.

Like he wasn’t standing in the darkness demanding the destruction of someone’s life.

Like he wasn’t the reason Ethan had spent years fighting battles nobody knew about.

My mother gripped the edge of the table.

Her face had lost all color.

“Lena,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Mom?””

She stared toward the window.

“Take Ethan and leave.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“Now.””

Ethan stepped between us and the window.

“No one is leaving.””

My mother looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No,” she said, her voice breaking.

“You don’t understand what Daniel is capable of.””

A loud knock hit the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Not angry.

Not impatient.

Confident.

Daniel knew exactly what he was doing.

“Open the door.””

His voice carried through the house.

My entire body froze.

Ethan moved closer to me.

“Stay behind me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Lena.””

“I’m not hiding anymore.””

He looked at me.

And for a second, I saw surprise.

Maybe because he was used to protecting everyone.

Maybe because he wasn’t used to someone standing beside him.

The knocking continued.

My mother closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“I should have told you years ago.””

I looked at her.

“Told me what?””

She walked toward the box.

“Your father didn’t just leave behind evidence against Daniel.””

She picked up a small key from inside.

“He left behind a plan.””

Ethan frowned.

“A plan?””

She nodded.

“Your father knew Daniel would eventually try to take everything.””

Another knock.

Louder.

“So he prepared.””

My mother walked toward an old cabinet in the corner of the room.

She opened a hidden drawer.

Inside was a small metal container.

I had lived in this house my entire life.

I had never known it existed.

“What is that?””

My mother looked at me.

“The reason Daniel never stopped searching.””

She opened it.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Ethan took the note.

His eyes moved quickly.

“What does it say?””

He looked up.

“Your father recorded a conversation.””

My mother nodded.

“Between him and Daniel.””

My breath caught.

A recording.

Proof.

The thing Daniel feared.

The front door handle suddenly moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

My mother stepped back.

“He has a copy of the key.””

Ethan looked at the door.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“Lena.””

I shook my head.

“You’re not doing this alone.””

Before he could answer, the door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

Two men stood behind him.

He looked around the room.

Then smiled.

“After twenty years, I finally found it.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel’s eyes landed on the metal container.

“There it is.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You won’t get it.””

Daniel sighed.

“You always were stubborn.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“You threatened my family.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your family?””

He smiled.

“Interesting choice of words.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Did he tell you?””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Did he tell you that your boyfriend’s father helped hide your father’s evidence?””

I looked at Ethan.

“What?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Of course not.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Daniel, leave.””

Daniel’s smile faded.

“You really think you’re the hero here?””

The room went silent.

Daniel pointed at Ethan.

“You’re exactly like your father.””

That sentence changed something in Ethan’s face.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Daniel walked closer.

“Always believing doing the right thing mattered more than winning.””

Ethan’s hands tightened.

Daniel continued.

“That’s why both of you lost.””

I looked at the flash drive.

Then at Daniel.

“You’re afraid.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“You’re afraid of what’s on that.””

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Daniel noticed.

And his expression turned cold.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“No,” I said.

“I think I finally do.””

He stared at me.

“You think because you found a recording, you can destroy me?””

He laughed.

“Do you know how many people tried before?””

Ethan stepped beside me.

“But they didn’t have this.””

Daniel looked at him.

Then smiled.

“Neither do you.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out another flash drive.

My blood ran cold.

“You really thought your father only made one copy?””

My mother gasped.

Daniel smiled.

“I’ve spent years cleaning up his mistakes.””

He held up the drive.

“This is the original.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Then why do you care about hers?””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Because hers proves what I did.””

Silence.

Everyone understood.

The drive Daniel carried protected him.

The drive my mother had destroyed him.

And that meant one thing.

The truth had survived.

Daniel looked at me.

“Give me the box.””

“No.””

His face changed.

“You don’t know what you’re choosing.””

I stepped forward.

“Yes, I do.””

Daniel stared.

“You’re choosing Ethan?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I glanced at Ethan.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely angry.

He turned toward the men behind him.

“Take it.””

Everything happened at once.

Ethan grabbed my hand.

My mother moved toward the box.

The lights flickered.

One of Daniel’s men stepped forward.

Then suddenly—

A loud siren echoed outside.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Blue and red lights reflected across the walls.

Police.

Daniel turned back.

“What did you do?””

I looked at him.

“I called before you arrived.””

His face twisted.

“You had no time.””

I smiled.

“You were wrong.””

The police entered seconds later.

Daniel didn’t fight.

He didn’t panic.

He simply looked at Ethan.

And smiled.

“This isn’t over.””

As they took him away, those words stayed with me.

Because somehow, I knew he was right.

May you like

Daniel had lost the battle.

But he wasn’t done.
