Chapter 13: The Person We Never Suspected
The footsteps stopped.
The warehouse was completely dark.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes your mind needs a few seconds to accept what your eyes already understand.
I knew that voice.
Ethan knew that voice.
Even Robert, who had spent years uncovering secrets, looked shocked.
Then the lights flickered back on.
And there she stood.
My mother.
Holding the original evidence Daniel had been searching for.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“Lena…”
I took a step back.
“No.””
My voice sounded strange.
“You?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
I laughed bitterly.
“After everything was over?””
Ethan stood between us.
But unlike before, he wasn’t angry.
He looked confused.
“Why do you have the original evidence?””
My mother looked at him.
“Because your father trusted me with it.””
The answer only created more questions.
“Then why did you let us think someone else was helping Daniel?”” Ethan asked.
My mother looked down.
“Because I needed to know who I could trust.””
The warehouse became silent.
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
She walked closer.
“I knew Daniel would eventually come back.””
“Then why didn’t you tell us?””
“Because every person who knew the truth became a target.””
She looked at Ethan.
“Your father.””
Then at Robert.
“Robert.””
Then at me.
“Me.””
I felt tears forming.
“Mom, you made me believe Ethan was fighting alone.””
Her face broke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
The words came out harder than I intended.
“Everyone says they are protecting me while they hide the truth.””
My mother looked hurt.
And I hated that.
Because I knew she loved me.
But love didn’t always mean the choices people made were right.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Ethan looked at the evidence in her hands.
“What is on that drive?””
My mother stared at it.
“Everything.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Then why did Daniel have access to so much if you had the original?””
My mother looked at him.
“Because I gave him something.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I gave him a fake copy.””
My eyes widened.
“You tricked him?””
She nodded.
“I knew he would eventually come for it.””
Ethan looked at her carefully.
“Then why did he believe you?””
“Because Daniel believed everyone had a price.””
A sad smile appeared on her face.
“He thought fear was the only thing that controlled people.””
She looked at me.
“He was wrong.””
For the first time, I saw my mother not as someone fragile.
Not as someone who needed saving.
But as someone who had been fighting quietly for years.
Still, one question remained.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“Who helped Daniel?””
Her expression changed.
And that scared me.
Because she knew.
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
“Who?””
She looked at Ethan.
“I’m sorry.””
Then she said the name.
A name that made the entire room go silent.
“Your uncle.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
Again.
The same answer.
The same betrayal.
But this time, something was different.
Because my mother continued.
“Your uncle wasn’t just helping Daniel.””
“What do you mean?””
“He was working for him because Daniel had something against him.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Like Claire?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“But Claire said Daniel trapped her brother.””
“And Daniel trapped your uncle.””
I frowned.
“Then why keep helping him?””
My mother’s expression became painful.
“Because unlike Claire…”
She looked down.
“Your uncle stopped wanting to escape.””
The truth hurt.
Because it was easier when everyone was just a victim.
It was harder when someone made the wrong choice.
Ethan walked away.
I followed him.
He stood near the warehouse door.
“Are you okay?””
He laughed quietly.
“No.””
I waited.
“I spent my whole life believing family was the one thing I could trust.””
His voice cracked.
“And every person connected to my family had a secret.””
I stepped beside him.
“You still have people who choose you.””
He looked at me.
“Do I?””
I held his hand.
“Yes.””
He looked at our hands.
And for the first time, he didn’t pull away.
Behind us, my mother spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
“The evidence isn’t enough.””
Robert frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Daniel prepared for this.””
“How?””
My mother looked at the flash drive.
“Because the original evidence proves what he did.””
She paused.
“But it doesn’t prove why he did it.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
My mother looked at Ethan.
“It means Daniel didn’t destroy your families because of greed.””
A cold feeling entered the room.
“Then why?””
She took a breath.
“Because your fathers discovered something bigger.””
Robert looked at her.
“Bigger than fraud?””
She nodded.
“Much bigger.””
My mother reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
She handed it to Ethan.
His face changed immediately.
“What is this?””
I looked over his shoulder.
The picture showed four people.
My father.
Ethan’s father.
Daniel.
And another man.
A man none of us recognized.
But Ethan did.
His face went pale.
“Impossible.””
“Who is he?”” I asked.
Ethan whispered:
“My grandfather.””
Everyone froze.
Because Ethan’s grandfather had died before he was born.
And yet he was standing in a photograph that revealed a secret nobody knew existed.

Then my mother said:
“The truth Daniel buried started before any of you were born.””
