Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Kept
My mother’s medical records.
Daniel had requested them.
Those four words followed me all night.
I sat at Ethan’s kitchen table, staring at the untouched cup of coffee in front of me.
The apartment was quiet.
Too quiet.
Ethan stood by the window, looking outside.
The old blue sedan was parked below.
For months, I had looked at that car and seen something embarrassing.
Now I saw a thousand hidden moments.
A hospital parking lot.
A tired man sitting behind the wheel.
Someone who had nowhere to rest because he was always taking care of someone else.
“Why would Daniel want my mother’s records?””
Ethan turned around.
“I don’t know.””
“But you think you do.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Ethan.””
He sat down across from me.
“There’s something strange about the timing.””
“What do you mean?””
“Daniel never cared about your mother.””
“Then why now?””
He looked at the table.
“Because he knows something.””
My stomach tightened.
“About what?””
Before he could answer, my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Lena, where are you?””
“With Ethan.””
Silence.
Then she said:
“You need to come home.””
Something about her voice terrified me.
“What happened?””
“I need to tell you something.””
My mother had always been strong.
Even during the worst days of her illness, she smiled.
She comforted me.
She told me everything would be okay.
But now she sounded afraid.
Twenty minutes later, Ethan and I arrived at her house.
She was sitting at the kitchen table with an old wooden box in front of her.
I had seen that box my entire childhood.
But she had never let me open it.
“Mom?””
She looked at Ethan.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan frowned.
“For what?””
She looked down.
“Because you got dragged into this.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What is this?””
My mother opened the box.
Inside were old papers.
Photos.
Letters.
And one document that looked older than anything else.
She handed it to Ethan.
His face changed as soon as he saw it.
“What is this?””
My mother took a deep breath.
“Something I should have told you both years ago.””
I looked at the paper.
“What is it?””
She looked at me.
“Your father’s company records.””
I froze.
“My father?””
I barely remembered him.
He died when I was young.
My mother rarely talked about him.
“Why would Daniel care about Dad?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Daniel didn’t build his company alone.””
Ethan looked at the document again.
Then he whispered:
“He stole it.””
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“What?””
My mother nodded.
“Daniel worked with your father.””
My hands went cold.
“He was your father’s business partner.””
I stared.
“But Dad died.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel took over?””
My mother nodded.
“He convinced everyone he had created everything.””
Ethan looked shocked.
“Your father’s inventions… the contracts…”
My mother pointed to the papers.
“They were never his.””
I couldn’t process it.
All these years, Daniel had been living a successful life built on someone else’s work.
But why did that involve Ethan?
My mother looked at him.
“Because Ethan’s company has the missing evidence.””
Ethan went still.
“What?””
She looked at him sadly.
“Your father kept copies of everything.””
I looked between them.
“Why would Ethan have them?””
My mother reached into the box again.
She pulled out an envelope.
Then she handed it to Ethan.
“Because your father trusted Ethan’s father.””
Ethan opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan?””
Slowly, he handed me the letter.
I read the first line.
*If you are reading this, it means Daniel has finally come for what he thinks belongs to him.*
My hands trembled.
The letter continued.
*Do not trust him. He will try to destroy anyone who gets close to the truth.*
I looked at Ethan.
Then at my mother.
The final sentence made my heart stop.
*The person Daniel fears most is not the man who can expose him. It is the woman who has been protecting the evidence for twenty years.*
I looked up.
“Mom…”
She was crying.
“Daniel has been looking for this box.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
My mother looked at Ethan.
“Because I knew what he would do.””
Then suddenly—
The lights went out.
The house fell completely dark.
A second later, something crashed outside.
Ethan stood immediately.
“What was that?””
My mother’s face turned pale.
Because she knew.
Someone was there.
And before anyone moved, a voice came from outside the window.
A voice I recognized.
Daniel.
“Give me the box…”
A pause.
“Or I’ll make sure everyone you love pays the price.””
I grabbed Ethan’s hand.
And in that moment, I realized something.
The old car.
The hospital bills.
The company.
None of it was the real battle.
May you like
The real battle was against a man who had spent twenty years hiding the truth.
And now he was ready to destroy us to keep it buried.
