Chapter 12: The Truth About My Mother

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

The words didn’t make sense.

“My mother?””

Robert nodded.

“She was the first person who discovered what Daniel was doing.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“My mother worked as a nurse.””

“Yes.””

“She wasn’t involved in business.””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Robert looked at me.

“Because your mother wasn’t looking for money.””

He paused.

“She was looking for the truth.””

Ethan stared at him.

“Explain.””

Robert opened another file.

“Years ago, your father became suspicious of Daniel’s finances.””

He placed a document on the table.

“Your mother helped him investigate.””

I looked at the papers.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

My entire life, I thought my mother was just trying to survive.

Just trying to raise me.

But she had been fighting a battle too.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Robert looked at me sadly.

“Because Daniel had already shown what he would do to people who got close.””

I remembered my mother’s fear when Daniel came to the house.

She wasn’t afraid because he was powerful.

She was afraid because she knew exactly who he was.

Ethan looked at Robert.

“Then why did my father hide the truth from me?””

Robert was silent.

Then he answered:

“Because he blamed himself.””

“For what?””

“For what happened to your mother.””

I froze.

“What?””

Robert looked down.

“Daniel found out your father was investigating him.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Robert’s voice became quieter.

“He attacked the people closest to him.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“My father’s death…”

Robert didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Ethan stepped back.

“You’re saying Daniel killed my father?””

“No.””

Robert looked at him.

“I’m saying Daniel caused the chain of events that led to his death.””

The room became silent.

Years of unanswered questions.

Years of pain.

All connected.

Then my phone rang.

My mother.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Lena.””

“What happened?””

“I need you to listen carefully.””

I stood.

“What is it?””

“Do not trust anyone.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

“We know.””

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“You don’t.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What do you mean?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“The person helping Daniel is still close to you.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

My mother started crying.

“Lena…”

“Mom, who?””

She whispered a name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Ethan’s face change when I repeated it.

Because it wasn’t Claire.

It wasn’t my uncle.

It wasn’t some stranger.

It was someone we had trusted completely.

Someone who had comforted us.

Someone who had stood beside us while pretending to help.

I lowered the phone.

Ethan looked at me.

“Who?””

I swallowed.

“My mother said…”

My voice shook.

“The person helping Daniel is someone in this room.””

Everyone froze.

Robert looked confused.

Claire, who had been silent, looked terrified.

And then the warehouse lights went out.

A sound came from the doorway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Familiar.

Someone stepped into the darkness.

And said:

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I knew that voice.

Everyone did.

May you like

Because the person standing there was the last person we expected.

And they were holding the original evidence Daniel had been searching for.
