Chapter 11: The Man Who Knew Everything

Ethan wanted to go alone.

Of course he did.

The moment he saw the message, I knew what he was thinking.

Protect everyone.

Carry everything.

Make the sacrifice quietly.

The same pattern.

The same mistake.

“Absolutely not.””

He looked at me.

“Lena.””

“No.””

“I need to do this.””

“You need answers.””

“Yes.””

“And you think walking into a mystery alone is the smart choice?””

He sighed.

“I don’t want you in danger.””

I stepped closer.

“Do you hear yourself?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“You spent years protecting me without letting me choose.””

Silence.

I softened my voice.

“Don’t do it again.””

He looked away.

Because he knew I was right.

An hour later, we arrived at the location.

An old warehouse outside the city.

The kind of place nobody visited anymore.

Ethan parked the car.

The old blue sedan.

The same car I once laughed at.

Now it felt like the strongest thing in the world.

Because it had carried us through every secret.

Every fight.

Every truth.

“You ready?””

Ethan looked at me.

“No.””

I smiled slightly.

“Me neither.””

We walked inside together.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

An elderly man sat at a table.

When he saw Ethan, his eyes filled with sadness.

“Ethan.””

Ethan stopped.

“Who are you?””

The man stood slowly.

“My name is Robert.””

Ethan stared.

“I don’t know you.””

“No.””

Robert looked down.

“But your father knew me.””

“How?””

“I worked with him.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Another person who kept secrets?””

Robert accepted the anger.

“You have every right to hate me.””

“Then explain.””

Robert sighed.

“Your father discovered Daniel was stealing from the company.””

“We know.””

“No.””

Robert shook his head.

“You know part of it.””

He opened a briefcase.

Inside were old files.

Photos.

Documents.

“Daniel wasn’t just stealing money.””

He placed a file on the table.

“He was building a network.””

I frowned.

“A network?””

Robert nodded.

“Fake companies. False identities. People who helped him hide his crimes.””

Ethan looked at the papers.

“Who helped him?””

Robert hesitated.

Then said:

“Your uncle.””

Ethan froze.

“My uncle?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I remembered the letter.

Someone inside the family.

Someone innocent.

But this wasn’t the end.

Robert continued.

“Your father discovered your uncle had been working with Daniel.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

Robert looked at him sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

“My uncle would never.””

“Ethan.””

The older man’s voice softened.

“Your father said the same thing.””

That hurt.

Because Ethan realized he was repeating the same mistake.

Trusting someone because he wanted them to be good.

“What happened?””

Robert looked down.

“Your father confronted him.””

“And?””

“He begged.””

“For forgiveness?””

Robert shook his head.

“For protection.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Robert looked at me.

“Daniel had evidence against him.””

“Of what?””

Robert hesitated.

Then answered:

“Fraud.””

Ethan’s face went pale.

“My uncle helped Daniel because he was trapped.””

Robert nodded.

“But then he became willing.””

The words hung in the air.

Because that was the difference.

Fear could explain betrayal.

It could not excuse it.

“Where is he now?”” Ethan asked.

Robert looked at him.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“He disappeared.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“When?””

“Two days ago.””

Ethan looked at me.

Two days.

The same time Daniel was arrested.

Something didn’t make sense.

Then Robert pulled out another document.

“This is what your father wanted you to have.””

Ethan took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It was a transfer document.

A legal agreement.

But the name on it made my heart stop.

Because it wasn’t Ethan’s father.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It was my mother.

“What does my mother have to do with this?””

Robert looked at me.

“That is the question your father wanted answered.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

He took a breath.

“Your mother wasn’t just protecting the evidence.””

My stomach tightened.

“She was protecting someone.””

“Who?””

Robert looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“The person who originally discovered Daniel’s crime.””

I whispered:

“My father?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The silence was terrifying.

“Then who?””

May you like

Robert’s answer changed everything.

“Your mother.””
