Chapter 4: The Contract That Changed Everything
Daniel’s words echoed in my head long after he stopped speaking.
“Your boyfriend didn’t just sacrifice his money for your mother.””
He tapped the folder.
“He sacrificed his entire future.””
I stared at the document lying on the hood of his car.
The wind moved between us, carrying the distant sounds of traffic, but everything around me felt strangely quiet.
Ethan looked like someone had taken away the last bit of strength holding him together.
I had seen him tired before.
I had seen him worried.
But I had never seen him afraid.
Not even when my mother was in the hospital.
Not even when we thought we might lose everything.
This was different.
“Ethan,” I whispered.
He didn’t look at me.
Daniel smiled.
That smile made my stomach turn.
“You didn’t tell her, did you?””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Leave her out of this.””
Daniel laughed.
“Still protecting her?””
He shook his head.
“Four years later, and you’re still doing the same thing.””
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Neither answered.
My patience disappeared.
“What is going on?””
Daniel picked up the folder.
“Your boyfriend and I had a business agreement.””
“I know that.””
“No, you don’t.””
He opened the folder and pulled out a page.
“Ethan signed over his share of the company as collateral.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Is that true?””
He finally looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Because he needed money.””
“For his father?”” I asked.
Daniel smiled.
“Partly.””
The word made my chest tighten.
“Partly?””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
But Daniel continued.
“Tell her.””
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
“Stop.””
Daniel ignored him.
“He needed money because his father’s medical bills were destroying his family. So I offered him a deal.””
He held up the paper.
“He signed this. If he couldn’t repay the debt within five years, his company shares would become mine.””
I looked at Ethan.
“How much time was left?””
Silence.
That silence answered everything.
“How much time?””
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“Two months.””
My heart sank.
“Two months until you lose your company?””
He nodded.
I couldn’t breathe.
All this time, I thought Ethan was struggling because he chose a simpler life.
I thought he drove an old car because he didn’t care about appearances.
I never knew he was standing on the edge of losing everything.
Daniel folded his arms.
“And then your mother got sick.””
I turned toward him.
“What does my mother have to do with this?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Everything.””
Ethan’s face went cold.
“Don’t.””
But Daniel looked directly at me.
“He had money saved to repay me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Every month, he saved. Every dollar went toward buying back his future.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then Daniel said the sentence that broke me.
“Then your mother needed treatment.””
The world seemed to tilt.
Ethan looked away.
“You used the money for her?””
I barely managed to ask.
He didn’t respond.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
“You had two months left,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“And you spent it?””
“Yes.””
“On my mother?””
“Yes.””
I covered my mouth.
I remembered all those nights.
I remembered Ethan telling me everything would be okay.
I remembered complaining that he didn’t take me on expensive dates.
I remembered asking why he wasn’t more ambitious.
And all along, he had been choosing between saving himself and saving my family.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Now do you understand?””
I looked at him.
He expected me to blame Ethan.
But something inside me changed.
Because for the first time, I saw the truth.
Daniel wasn’t telling me this because he cared.
He was telling me because he wanted to hurt Ethan.
“You knew about my mother,” I said.
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“Yes.””
“You knew Ethan used the money for her treatment.””
“Yes.””
“And you still came after him?””
Daniel smiled.
“Business is business.””
The coldness of his answer made my blood boil.
Ethan grabbed the folder.
“Enough.””
Daniel pulled it away.
“Not yet.””
He looked at me.
“You want to know the funniest part?””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
“Ethan never told you because he thought you would feel guilty.””
I looked at Ethan.
Daniel laughed.
“He protected your feelings while destroying his own future.””
“Stop talking.””
Ethan’s voice was low.
Dangerously low.
For a second, Daniel stopped smiling.
Then he stepped back.
“You have forty-eight hours.””
He pointed at the folder.
“After that, the company is mine.””
He walked toward his car.
Then he stopped.
“Oh, and Lena?””
I looked at him.
“You should ask your boyfriend why he refused my offer last year.””
I frowned.
“What offer?””
Daniel smiled.
“The offer that could have saved him.””
Then he drove away.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
I turned toward Ethan.
“What offer?””
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan.””
He looked exhausted.
“Let’s go home.””
“No.””
He stopped.
“I want the truth.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to run.
Then he finally spoke.
“Daniel offered me a way out.””
“What way?””
“He offered to erase the debt.””
“That sounds good.””
“It wasn’t.””
“Why?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because the price was you.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“He wanted me to leave you.””
I stared.
“He said if I ended our relationship, he would forgive the debt.””
I couldn’t speak.
“He knew how much you meant to me.””
Ethan looked away.
“He wanted me to choose.””
I whispered:
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because losing everything I owned was easier than losing you.””
The words broke me.
I stepped closer.
But before I could say anything, Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
A message appeared.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
He handed me the phone.
It was from an unknown number.
A single sentence.
*You still haven’t told her the worst part.*
I looked at Ethan.
“What worst part?””
He didn’t answer.
And that terrified me more than anything.
May you like
Because I realized Daniel wasn’t finished destroying his life.
He was only beginning.
