Chapter 10: The Evidence Hidden In The Envelope

I stared at the envelope sitting on the table.

It looked ordinary.

That was the terrifying part.

A simple brown envelope.

No warning.

No sign that it held the truth about years of secrets, broken promises, and a child who had been treated like he mattered less.

Daniel stood across from us.

For once, he didn’t look confident.

He looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment and was afraid of what would happen when it finally arrived.

Malcolm picked up the envelope.

“Why do you have this?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

“Because your father gave it to me.””

My son froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three days before he died.””

The room became silent.

I remembered that time.

The hospital visits.

The unanswered questions.

The way Malcolm’s father became quieter every day.

We all thought he was simply getting weaker.

But maybe he was preparing.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”” Malcolm asked.

Daniel looked down.

“Because I was told not to.””

“By who?””

“Your father.””

Malcolm laughed once.

A painful sound.

“So you’ve been keeping secrets for years?””

“Yes.””

“And you thought that was okay?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I knew it wasn’t.””

He pushed the envelope toward Malcolm.

“But I also knew your father was terrified.””

Malcolm opened it.

Inside were several documents.

The first was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Their father’s.

I watched Malcolm read.

His face changed slowly.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He handed it to me.

The letter began:

Malcolm,

If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally been exposed.

I stopped.

My hands tightened around the paper.

The people I feared.

Not one person.

People.

The letter continued.

I created the trust because I discovered money was disappearing from accounts connected to our family. I believed someone was using my name to move funds without permission.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I knew he suspected something.””

Malcolm kept reading.

I wanted to confront them. But I was afraid. Not for myself. For Isaiah.

My heart ached.

Even before Isaiah understood the world, adults were already fighting around him.

The letter continued.

There is one person who knows the truth. Someone who was there when the first transfer happened.

Someone who helped hide the evidence.

Malcolm stopped reading.

“Who?””

Daniel looked away.

“That’s what we never found out.””

I frowned.

“You mean you don’t know?””

“No.””

Malcolm stood.

“Then why bring this here?””

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“Because I found the missing piece.””

Everyone turned.

“What missing piece?”” Malcolm asked.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He placed a small flash drive on the table.

“This.””

I stared.

“What is it?””

“A copy of the original bank records.””

Malcolm looked confused.

“Why would my father have that?””

“Because he didn’t trust computers.””

Daniel gave a sad smile.

“He printed everything.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“And what does it show?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“It shows the first person who accessed Isaiah’s money.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Malcolm.

“You need to see it yourself.””

We connected the drive to my laptop.

The files opened.

Bank statements.

Transfer records.

Dates.

Names.

The first unauthorized withdrawal happened six years ago.

Isaiah was only three.

The amount wasn’t huge.

Two thousand dollars.

But there was something worse.

The person who approved the transaction wasn’t Tasha.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Malcolm.

It was someone else.

Malcolm stared at the screen.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

I leaned closer.

And then I saw the name.

My hands went cold.

Because the account access belonged to…

Emily.

I looked at Malcolm.

“That can’t be right.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked shocked too.

“I never saw this.””

Malcolm backed away from the table.

“My wife didn’t steal from Isaiah.””

Nobody said anything.

Because we all knew that.

Emily loved that boy more than anything.

So why was her name there?

Then another file opened automatically.

A scanned document.

A note.

Emily’s handwriting.

I read it.

I was forced to move the money temporarily. Someone threatened to expose Malcolm if I refused.

I stopped breathing.

Malcolm grabbed the paper.

“What?””

He read the next line.

If anything happens to me, do not believe the records. They were created to make it look like I was responsible.

The room went silent.

The truth shifted again.

Emily wasn’t the thief.

She was covering for someone.

Someone who had the power to frame her.

Malcolm looked at Daniel.

“Who could do this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A voice whispered:

“You’re looking in the wrong direction.””

My blood froze.

“Who is this?””

The person ignored me.

“You want to know who hurt Isaiah?””

I stood up.

“Tell me.””

A pause.

Then:

“Ask Malcolm why Emily never told him the truth.””

The call ended.

I looked at my son.

May you like

Because suddenly…

I wasn’t sure what secret Malcolm had been hiding anymore.
