Chapter 11: The Truth Malcolm Buried
The next morning, Malcolm came to my house before sunrise.
I knew immediately something was wrong.
Not because he looked tired.
Because he looked defeated.
He stood at my door holding a small box.
A box I had never seen before.
“What is that?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He walked inside and placed it on the table.
“I should have told you years ago.””
My heart sank.
“About what?””
He opened the box.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Documents.
All connected to Emily.
“I found these after she died.””
I stared at him.
“You found them?””
“Yes.””
“And you hid them?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“Yes.””
I sat down slowly.
“Why?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That I was the reason she died.””
The words shocked me.
“What are you talking about?””
Malcolm took a deep breath.
“Emily and I fought the night before the accident.””
I stayed quiet.
“She wanted to tell me something.””
“What?””
“She said she knew who was taking money.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
“She wouldn’t say.””
“Why?””
“She said if I knew, I would confront them.””
“And?””
“She said that would put Isaiah at risk.””
I looked at the box.
“What happened after?””
“I got angry.””
His voice cracked.
“I told her she was always suspicious. I told her she was seeing problems everywhere.””
I closed my eyes.
“And then?””
“She left.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“She called me later.””
“What did she say?””
“She said she found proof.””
I looked up.
“Proof of what?””
Malcolm swallowed.
“That someone was planning to take Isaiah away from me.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“She said someone was building a case against me.””
“Why?””
“She didn’t know.””
He touched the papers.
“But she thought the money was part of it.””
Everything started connecting.
The missing money.
The fake records.
The attempt to make Emily look guilty.
Someone wasn’t just stealing.
Someone was creating a story.
A story where Malcolm looked like an irresponsible father.
A story where someone else could take control of Isaiah’s future.
I opened one of the letters.
It was from Emily.
Malcolm,
I need you to understand something. The person doing this knows us. They know our weaknesses. They know how to make us fight each other.
I continued reading.
Do not trust anyone simply because they share your last name.
I looked at Malcolm.
“Why didn’t you show me this before?””
He wiped his eyes.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“By yourself?””
“Yes.””
“You’ve been carrying this alone for years.””
He nodded.
“I thought if I found the truth, Isaiah wouldn’t have to know how close everything came to falling apart.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Where Isaiah was sleeping.
A child who deserved honesty.
Not secrets.
Then I noticed something.
A photograph inside the box.
Emily.
Isaiah.
And someone standing behind them.
I picked it up.
“Who is this?””
Malcolm looked.
His face changed.
“I don’t know.””
The person’s face was partially hidden.
But they were holding something.
A folder.
With the same symbol from the trust documents.
Daniel walked in a few minutes later.
We showed him the picture.
He immediately recognized it.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
Daniel stared.
“Because that person was supposed to be gone.””
The room went cold.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at Malcolm.
Then whispered:
“Your father’s former attorney.””
I frowned.
“The attorney?””
“Yes.””
“What does he have to do with this?””
Daniel’s face was serious.
“He created the trust.””
Malcolm stood.
“And?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“He also had access to every document.””
Before anyone could speak, there was a knock.
A hard knock.
Not a neighbor.
Not a friend.
A warning.
Malcolm opened the door.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Holding a briefcase.
He looked directly at Malcolm.

Then said:
“I believe it’s time we discussed what your wife discovered.””
