Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Before Isaiah Was Born

The word stayed in the air.

Trust.

A legal document.

A hidden arrangement.

Something created before Isaiah was even born.

Something Emily knew about.

Something everyone else had missed.

Malcolm sat down slowly.

“My father created a trust?””

Tasha nodded.

“That’s what Emily believed.””

“Why would she never tell me?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at Tasha.

“You said she believed someone close to Isaiah was hiding something.””

“Yes.””

“And you think it was Malcolm’s father?””

“No.””

Her answer came too quickly.

That surprised me.

“Then who?””

Tasha looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I studied her face.

For years, I thought Tasha was selfish.

Careless.

Maybe even cruel.

But now I was seeing something else.

Fear.

She wasn’t just afraid of losing money.

She was afraid of what we would discover.

“What did Emily find?”” I asked.

Tasha walked toward the kitchen.

She opened a cabinet.

Behind a stack of plates, she pulled out a small folder.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“Emily gave it to me.””

Malcolm looked angry.

“You had this the whole time?””

Tasha flinched.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she told me not to open it unless something happened.””

“And something happened.””

“I know.””

She handed it to him.

The folder was old.

Inside were copies of legal papers.

A trust agreement.

A list of names.

A financial history.

I watched Malcolm read.

His expression changed line by line.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Malcolm.””

He handed me the papers.

I read the first page.

The trust had been created by Malcolm’s father years earlier.

For his future grandchildren.

But the beneficiary listed was not Isaiah.

It was all grandchildren.

Including children who did not exist yet.

I looked confused.

“What does this mean?””

Malcolm pointed to a section.

“The account was supposed to grow.””

“How much?””

He looked at another page.

Then his face went pale.

“A lot.””

“How much?””

He whispered:

“Almost two hundred thousand dollars.””

I stared at him.

Two hundred thousand.

Suddenly, the missing school money felt even smaller.

This was never about five hundred dollars.

It was about a child’s entire future.

Then I saw another name.

The person assigned to manage the trust.

My stomach dropped.

Because it wasn’t Malcolm.

It wasn’t me.

It wasn’t Emily.

It was Daniel.

I looked up.

“Daniel controlled this?””

Malcolm nodded slowly.

“He was the trustee.””

The room became silent.

Suddenly, everything connected.

The money.

The secrets.

The fear.

Daniel had access.

But why would Emily write his name?

Because she knew.

Or because she suspected.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone froze.

Malcolm walked toward the door.

“Who is it?””

A voice answered.

“Open the door.””

Daniel.

Malcolm looked at me.

Then opened it.

Daniel stepped inside.

His face was serious.

“I know you found the documents.””

Nobody spoke.

“How?””

He looked at Tasha.

She looked away.

Daniel sighed.

“Because you were never supposed to find them.””

My heart started racing.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Malcolm.

“Your father didn’t create that trust for Isaiah.””

Malcolm frowned.

“Yes, he did.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He created it because he knew something was wrong with the family.””

I stepped forward.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

“I found this years ago.””

Malcolm stared.

“What is it?””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“The reason Emily was afraid.””

He placed it on the table.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Your father didn’t leave Isaiah money.””

A pause.

“He left Isaiah evidence.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“Of who really tried to steal from him.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Daniel said:

“And the person who started this…”

May you like

He looked directly at Malcolm.

“Is someone you’ve trusted your entire life.””
