Chapter 7: The Secret Behind Emily’s Warning

I had spent my entire life believing I knew my family.

I knew Malcolm’s stubbornness.

I knew his kindness.

I knew the way he carried guilt even when something wasn’t his fault.

I knew Emily’s gentle heart.

I knew Tasha’s struggles.

But the name written on that paper made me question everything.

The person Emily warned me about was someone I had welcomed into my home.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had sat at my kitchen table, smiled at my grandson, and called himself family.

Malcolm stared at the paper.

His face had gone completely still.

“Say something,” I whispered.

He didn’t.

“Malcolm.””

He looked up slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

The name on the page seemed impossible.

It was written clearly.

No mistake.

No confusion.

Emily’s handwriting.

Her warning.

Her fear.

All pointing to one person.

Malcolm’s older brother.

My other son.

Daniel.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

Daniel.

The man who had brought gifts for Isaiah every birthday.

The man who had hugged him after Emily died.

The man who told everyone he loved that little boy.

“What does Daniel have to do with this?”” Malcolm asked.

I folded the paper.

“I don’t know.””

“Mom, this doesn’t make sense.””

“I agree.””

“Emily trusted him.””

“She trusted everyone until they gave her a reason not to.””

Malcolm looked away.

A memory crossed his face.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Before Emily died, Daniel and I had an argument.””

“About what?””

“Money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What money?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I don’t know exactly. Daniel said he was starting a business. He wanted me to invest.””

“And?””

“I said no.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to save everything for Isaiah.””

The room went silent.

Then Malcolm looked at the paper again.

“Do you think Emily found out something?””

“I think she knew something.””

The next morning, we found Daniel.

He was sitting in a coffee shop near his office.

When he saw us walk in together, his smile disappeared.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his words.

Not his reaction.

His fear.

“Malcolm,” he said carefully.

“What are you doing here?””

My son sat across from him.

“We need to talk.””

Daniel glanced at me.

“About what?””

I placed the paper on the table.

His eyes dropped.

And in that second, everything changed.

He didn’t ask what it was.

He didn’t ask why we had it.

He recognized it.

“What is that?”” Malcolm asked.

Daniel leaned back.

“I don’t know.””

But his voice was different.

Too fast.

Too rehearsed.

I watched him carefully.

“You know exactly what it is.””

His jaw tightened.

“Marianne, don’t start accusing me.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at Malcolm.

“Your mother is upset because someone stole money from Isaiah. Now she wants someone to blame.””

Malcolm’s face hardened.

“You knew?””

Daniel said nothing.

“You knew about the inheritance?””

A few seconds passed.

Then Daniel sighed.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“Emily told me.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

I stared at him.

“And you didn’t tell us?””

He looked down.

“I promised her I wouldn’t.””

“Why?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me more than words.

Malcolm leaned forward.

“Daniel.””

His voice was cold.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at him.

“You really don’t know?””

“Know what?””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Your wife didn’t just think someone was stealing money.””

The air changed.

“What are you saying?”” Malcolm asked.

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at his brother.

“She thought someone was trying to destroy you.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

I didn’t believe him.

Not completely.

“Then why did Emily write your name?””

His eyes snapped back to mine.

For the first time, he looked genuinely shocked.

“She wrote my name?””

Malcolm watched him carefully.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

Daniel stood up.

“Where did you find that?””

I didn’t answer.

Because something about his reaction confused me.

He looked afraid.

But not guilty.

Before we left, Daniel stopped us.

“Wait.””

We turned.

His expression had changed.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Emily wasn’t only worried about money.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“What else?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She was worried about Isaiah’s safety.””

My blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked around the coffee shop.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Because she believed someone inside the family was watching him.””
