Chapter 3: The Name Hidden In The Paperwork

I spent the next hour sitting in my car outside Tasha’s house.

Not because I didn’t know what to do.

Because I needed to understand what I had just discovered.

The woman raising my grandson had access to money his mother left for him.

Money that was supposed to protect him.

Money that could have bought his school supplies.

His clothes.

His opportunities.

But instead, Isaiah was standing beside an empty backpack pretending he wasn’t hurt.

I called Malcolm again.

“Tell me everything.””

He sighed.

“I should have checked sooner.””

“This is not the time to blame yourself.””

“But I trusted her.””

I looked through the windshield.

“You trusted your wife to take care of your son.””

“Yes.””

“And she didn’t.””

The silence between us said more than words.

A few minutes later, Malcolm sent me copies of the documents he had.

I opened the first page.

Emily’s signature was at the bottom.

My hands shook.

Emily had always been careful.

She was the kind of person who labeled everything.

She wrote birthdays on calendars months in advance.

She packed Isaiah’s lunch with little notes folded inside.

She loved that boy.

And before she died, she had tried to make sure he would be okay.

The document was clear.

A trusted family member was supposed to oversee Isaiah’s inheritance until he turned eighteen.

Not Tasha.

Not anyone who benefited from the money.

I read the name.

My heart sank.

Because the person Emily chose was someone none of us had considered.

Me.

I called Malcolm.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I didn’t know,” he said.

“Emily told me she had made arrangements, but she said everything would be handled.””

I closed my eyes.

“She trusted me.””

“She trusted you because you love Isaiah.””

I looked toward the house.

Inside was my grandson.

A boy who had no idea adults were fighting over the things meant for him.

That afternoon, I went back inside.

Tasha was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked tired.

“You found out.””

It wasn’t a question.

I placed the paperwork down.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

For the first time, she didn’t look angry.

She looked cornered.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen like this.””

“Like what?””

“Like everyone finding out.””

I stared at her.

“How long?””

She looked down.

“How long did you use Isaiah’s money?””

She didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

“Was it for the house?””

Her silence confirmed it.

“For Jordan and Ava?””

Her eyes snapped up.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

She stood.

“I was struggling.””

“So Isaiah had to sacrifice?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“Because he was the easiest child to ignore.””

Her face changed.

“You have no idea what I’ve done for this family.””

“I know what you didn’t do.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“You didn’t protect him.””

Then Isaiah appeared.

He was holding his broken backpack.

He looked between us.

“Grandma?””

My heart shattered.

“What are you doing here, buddy?””

He looked at Tasha.

“Are we in trouble?””

I immediately walked toward him.

“No, sweetheart.””

He hugged his backpack against his chest.

“Mom said people are always angry about money.””

The room went silent.

I knelt down.

“Isaiah, did you ever get the school money Dad sent?””

He hesitated.

Then shook his head.

“I didn’t want to ask.””

“Why?””

He looked embarrassed.

“Because Mom said we had bigger problems.””

My eyes filled with tears.

A child should never have to feel guilty for needing a notebook.

I stood up.

“Tasha.””

She looked at me.

“We’re going to talk about everything.””

She swallowed.

“You’re going to tell Malcolm?””

I didn’t answer.

Because before I could speak, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something inside me told me not to.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Marianne Thomas?””

“Yes.””

“This is the bank’s legal department.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a pause.

Then the woman said:

“Because we found another account connected to Isaiah’s inheritance.””

I looked at Tasha.

Her face suddenly went white.

The woman continued.

“And according to our records…”

She stopped.

Like she was choosing her words carefully.

“Someone attempted to transfer the remaining funds yesterday.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

The woman took a breath.

Then she said a name.

May you like

A name that changed everything.

“Malcolm Thomas.””
