Chapter 12: The Man Who Controlled The Paper Trail

The man at the door didn’t look dangerous.

That was what made him dangerous.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t nervous.

He wasn’t trying to hide.

He stood there calmly, like he had walked into our home a hundred times before.

Like he belonged.

“Who are you?”” Malcolm asked.

The man adjusted his coat.

“Richard Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel’s reaction said everything.

Daniel stepped back.

“You.””

Richard looked at him.

“You’re still involved?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“I should ask you the same thing.””

Malcolm looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“I think there has been a misunderstanding.””

I hated that phrase.

People used it when they wanted to make the truth smaller.

“This is not a misunderstanding,” I said.

Richard looked at me.

“And you must be Marianne.””

The fact that he knew my name made my skin crawl.

“How do you know me?””

“I know everyone connected to this situation.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Malcolm.

“You have been searching for answers you don’t want.””

Malcolm stepped forward.

“You know what happened to Emily.””

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“I know what Emily believed happened.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she was emotional.””

My anger rose.

“Don’t talk about her like that.””

Richard ignored me.

“She made accusations without understanding the full picture.””

Daniel laughed.

“You mean without understanding your picture?””

Richard looked at him.

“Careful.””

The room became silent.

Because that wasn’t a warning.

It was a threat.

Malcolm noticed too.

“What did you do?””

Richard sighed.

“I protected this family.””

“No.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“You protected yourself.””

Richard opened his briefcase.

Inside were copies of documents.

“I can prove every transaction was legal.””

He placed them on the table.

I looked at the papers.

Too many documents.

Too many signatures.

Too much preparation.

“You came here prepared.””

Richard smiled.

“I expected questions.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You expected someone to find the truth.””

Richard didn’t respond.

Then Malcolm saw something.

A signature.

His face changed.

“That’s not my signature.””

Richard looked at him.

“Of course it is.””

“No.””

Malcolm picked up the paper.

“I never signed this.””

Richard remained calm.

“That’s impossible.””

Malcolm looked at Daniel.

“You said my father created the trust.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does this document transfer control to someone else?””

Nobody spoke.

Because there it was.

The missing piece.

The person who controlled the paperwork.

Richard.

I looked at him.

“You changed the trust.””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

He leaned forward.

“I corrected it.””

Malcolm’s voice became dangerous.

“You stole from my son.””

Richard shook his head.

“You’re still thinking too simply.””

“Then explain.””

Richard looked toward the hallway.

Toward Isaiah’s room.

And he said something that made my blood turn cold.

“Your son was never supposed to inherit that money.””

I stepped forward.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Emily made a mistake.””

Malcolm’s face turned red.

“She was his mother.””

“And mothers make emotional decisions.””

The room went silent.

Then Richard reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out one final document.

“I have proof.””

He placed it on the table.

A DNA report.

Everyone froze.

Malcolm stared.

“What is this?””

Richard looked directly at him.

“The reason Emily’s plan was never valid.””

I picked up the paper.

My hands shook.

Because at the top of the report were words that could destroy everything.

Paternity Test.

And the name listed as Isaiah’s father…

Was not Malcolm.
