Chapter 14: The Final Piece Emily Left Behind

Richard was right about one thing.

We didn’t know everything.

But he was wrong about something else.

He thought we were still the same family he had manipulated for years.

He thought secrets would keep controlling us.

He was wrong.

The next morning, we met with a lawyer.

Not Richard.

Someone new.

Someone who had no connection to our family.

Her name was Sarah Bennett.

She reviewed every document.

Every transfer.

Every signature.

Every hidden account.

And after three hours, she placed the papers down.

“This was planned.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“What was?””

“The entire chain of events.””

She pointed at the documents.

“Someone created confusion around Isaiah’s inheritance. They moved money through different accounts. They created records that made certain people look responsible.””

My hands tightened.

“Emily was framed.””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked relieved and devastated at the same time.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Sarah picked up the old letter.

“Because she started documenting everything.””

She opened another folder.

Inside were dozens of notes.

Emily’s handwriting.

Dates.

Names.

Observations.

She had been collecting evidence quietly.

“She knew Richard was changing documents,” Sarah explained.

Malcolm looked at Daniel.

“And the paternity?””

Sarah nodded.

“She discovered that too.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because she believed telling the truth at the wrong time would put Isaiah in danger.””

“From Richard?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the papers.

“So what happened?””

Sarah turned to the final document.

“This.””

She placed a sealed envelope on the table.

The handwriting made everyone stop.

Emily.

“To be opened when Isaiah is old enough to understand.””

My heart ached.

She had planned everything.

She knew one day the truth would come out.

She just hoped Isaiah would be old enough to handle it.

Sarah looked at Malcolm.

“You need to decide whether to open this.””

Everyone looked at him.

He held the envelope.

For a moment, he looked terrified.

Then he looked toward Isaiah.

Who was sitting nearby drawing a picture.

A family.

Four people holding hands.

Malcolm opened the letter.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he began reading.

My sweet Isaiah,

If you are hearing this, then life became more complicated than I wanted it to be.

But there is one thing I need you to know.

You were never a mistake.

Not for one second.

I looked away.

Because those words were meant for a child who had spent years feeling like he was second place.

The letter continued.

You have two fathers who love you. One gave you life. One raised you. Love is not measured only by blood.

Daniel covered his face.

Malcolm kept reading.

The person who tried to hurt you did not win.

Because you were always surrounded by people who loved you.

Then came the final paragraph.

I need you to remember this:

The truth can hurt.

But lies hurt longer.

Malcolm folded the letter.

Nobody spoke.

Then Sarah received a phone call.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

We all looked at her.

She ended the call.

“Richard is gone.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

“He left town.””

Daniel stood.

“Can he run?””

Sarah looked serious.

“Not for long.””

Then she placed another document on the table.

“We found something.””

“What?””

She looked at Malcolm.

“Richard wasn’t acting alone.””

My heart sank.

“Who else?””

Sarah hesitated.

Then said:

“The person who approved the original transfers…”

She looked toward Daniel.

“Was someone inside your immediate family.””

Everyone became silent.

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Sarah pushed the paper forward.

“No.””

She pointed at the signature.

“It’s real.””

I looked down.

And there it was.

A name.

A signature.

Someone who had been standing beside us this entire time.

May you like

Someone who knew everything.

Someone who had never admitted the truth.
