Chapter 13: The Truth About Isaiah’s Father

The room went completely silent.

I could hear the ticking of the clock above the kitchen door.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three.

Nobody moved.

Because sometimes the truth doesn’t arrive like a storm.

Sometimes it arrives like a whisper.

And that whisper destroys everything you thought you knew.

I stared at the document in my hands.

A paternity test.

A name.

A result.

A secret that had been hidden for nine years.

I looked at Malcolm.

My son looked like someone had taken the ground out from beneath him.

“Is this real?”” he asked.

His voice was barely audible.

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That was the first sign that something was wrong.

A person telling the truth doesn’t need time to prepare.

“A DNA test doesn’t lie,” Richard finally said.

Malcolm grabbed the paper.

His hands were shaking.

“No.””

He looked at the numbers.

Then looked again.

“No.””

I had never seen my son look so broken.

Not when Emily died.

Not when he lost his job.

Not when he realized Isaiah’s money was missing.

This was different.

This wasn’t anger.

This was grief.

“Malcolm,” I whispered.

He stepped backward.

“Everyone knew.””

Nobody spoke.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Malcolm looked at him.

“Don’t.””

“I swear to you, I didn’t know.””

Richard crossed his arms.

“Your brother knew more than he admits.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Don’t you dare.””

The tension in the room exploded.

“You manipulated all of us,” Daniel said.

Richard smiled slightly.

“I handled a difficult situation.””

“You destroyed a family.””

“No.””

Richard looked toward the hallway.

“I prevented a mistake from continuing.””

My hands tightened.

“You keep talking about Isaiah like he’s paperwork.””

Richard looked at me.

“That child’s future depends on facts.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“His future depends on the people who love him.””

Richard’s expression didn’t change.

“That kind of thinking is exactly why Emily made emotional decisions.””

Malcolm looked up.

“Who is his father?””

The question hung there.

Nobody wanted to answer.

Then Richard said:

“Daniel.””

The silence that followed felt impossible.

I looked at my other son.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Malcolm stared.

“Daniel?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

And that was when I knew.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he looked guilty.

“Tell me I’m wrong,” Malcolm whispered.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Malcolm…”

“Tell me.””

Daniel’s shoulders dropped.

“I didn’t know until after Emily died.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

Malcolm stumbled backward.

“You’re saying Isaiah is your son?””

Daniel nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth.

The memories came rushing back.

The way Daniel always held Isaiah.

The way he visited more often after Emily died.

The way he defended him.

The way Emily trusted him.

Suddenly, pieces of the puzzle moved.

But they didn’t fit.

Not completely.

Malcolm looked at Daniel.

“How could you keep this from me?””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Because Emily begged me.””

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Of him.””

Everyone turned.

Richard’s calm expression disappeared for the first time.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Am I?””

He looked at Malcolm.

“Emily found out the truth when Isaiah was still a baby.””

Malcolm’s eyes filled.

“And she never told me?””

“She wanted to.””

Daniel swallowed.

“But Richard convinced her not to.””

Richard stepped forward.

“That is absurd.””

Daniel ignored him.

“She discovered that the trust was being changed. She discovered money was disappearing. And then she discovered Isaiah’s paternity.””

I felt tears forming.

“So why didn’t she tell Malcolm?””

Daniel looked at my son.

“Because she knew you loved Isaiah.””

Malcolm looked away.

“She thought if the truth came out, everything would fall apart.””

Richard shook his head.

“You’re rewriting history.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became stronger.

“You’re the one who rewrote documents.””

Richard’s face changed.

A small crack in the mask.

Malcolm looked at him.

“You knew.””

Richard didn’t answer.

“You knew Isaiah wasn’t my son.””

Still silence.

“And you used that.””

Richard finally spoke.

“I used the information available to protect the trust.””

“You tried to take my son away.””

Richard looked cold.

“I tried to ensure the money went where it legally belonged.””

I stepped between them.

“You stole from a child.””

Richard looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.””

Then I heard a small voice behind us.

“Dad?””

Everyone froze.

Isaiah stood at the hallway entrance.

He had heard everything.

Malcolm immediately moved toward him.

“Buddy—”

Isaiah looked confused.

“Is Daniel my dad too?””

Nobody answered.

Because no one knew how to explain a lifetime of secrets to a nine-year-old child.

I walked toward him.

“Isaiah…”

He looked at me.

“Did everyone know something except me?””

My heart broke.

Because that was the question of a child who had already spent too much time feeling unwanted.

I knelt down.

“No one should have kept you in the dark.””

He looked at Malcolm.

“Are you still my dad?””

Malcolm dropped to his knees.

“Always.””

“But I’m not your son?””

Malcolm grabbed his hands.

“Listen to me.””

His voice cracked.

“You are my son because I chose you every single day.””

Isaiah cried.

And then he hugged Malcolm.

Not because he understood everything.

Because he understood love.

Behind us, Richard quietly stepped toward the door.

But Daniel noticed.

“Where are you going?””

Richard stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re not leaving.””

Richard smiled.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

May you like

Then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“You still don’t know what Emily hid.””
