Chapter 11: The Woman Who Followed the Money
The room changed after Claire arrived.
Not because she was loud.
Not because she threatened anyone.
Because she brought something nobody else had.
Proof.
For weeks, everyone had been giving me stories.
Reasons.
Excuses.
Apologies.
But Claire brought facts.
Numbers didn’t cry.
Numbers didn’t manipulate.
Numbers didn’t say they loved you before destroying you.
They simply told the truth.
I sat at the table while Claire spread documents across the surface.
Marcus remained standing.
But his confidence was gone.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.””
Claire didn’t even look at him.
“I understand exactly what I’m looking at.””
She pointed to a transaction.
“Three months ago.””
Another paper.
“Two months ago.””
Another.
“Last month.””
She looked at me.
“Money was being moved from your business accounts into a holding company.””
I frowned.
“What holding company?””
Claire looked at Marcus.
“His.””
My stomach tightened.
Marcus crossed his arms.
“This is ridiculous.””
Claire finally looked up.
“No. What’s ridiculous is thinking you could hide financial fraud from someone whose job is finding it.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You knew?””
Claire nodded.
“I suspected.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her expression softened.
“Because I didn’t have enough proof.””
I looked down.
Six months.
The same timeline.
Everything began six months ago.
The day Julian started pulling away.
The day my documents disappeared.
The day my marriage became a business opportunity.
Claire continued.
“Marcus created a pattern.””
She pointed to the files.
“He made Tiana’s company appear unstable.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“By moving money, delaying payments, and creating unnecessary expenses.””
My chest tightened.
“I thought business was slowing down.””
Claire shook her head.
“It wasn’t.””
She looked at me.
“You were growing.””
The words hit me harder than expected.
Because I had spent months thinking I had failed.
Thinking I wasn’t smart enough.
Strong enough.
Good enough.
Marcus had made me doubt myself.
And that was part of the plan.
“He wanted me to think I couldn’t handle it.””
“Yes.””
Claire looked at him.
“Because someone who doubts herself is easier to control.””
Marcus laughed.
“You’re making me sound like a villain.””
I looked at him.
“You forged my signature.””
He shrugged.
“Allegedly.””
Claire immediately responded.
“Not allegedly.””
She pulled out another document.
“The metadata from the digital files proves the documents were altered from your device.””
Marcus’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
Vanessa whispered:
“You’re finished.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You think this is over?””
The room became tense.
Because his confidence returned.
“I made one mistake.””
Claire frowned.
“What?””
“I trusted people.””
He looked around.
At Julian.
At Brielle.
Then at me.
“I thought they understood what was happening.””
Julian stepped forward.
“You used me.””
Marcus smiled.
“Yes.””
Julian’s face hardened.
“And you destroyed my marriage.””
Marcus shrugged.
“You were already doing that.””
The words cut deeper because they were true.
Julian looked down.
For once, he didn’t defend himself.
Claire gathered the papers.
“Tiana, there’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“This is why I came tonight.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
My handwriting.
But I didn’t recognize it.
“What is that?””
Claire placed it in front of me.
“It was found in your office.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
A handwritten letter.
I read the first line.
*If you are reading this, it means I was right not to trust anyone.*
My heart stopped.
I knew that handwriting.
It was mine.
But I never wrote it.
The letter continued.
*Julian doesn’t know everything. Marcus doesn’t know everything. The person behind this is closer than you think.*
My hands shook.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Claire looked serious.
“We don’t know.””
The room became silent.
Then I noticed something.
A date.
The letter was dated seven months ago.
Before the affair.
Before the house.
Before the divorce filing.
Before everything.
I looked at Julian.
“Did I know something was wrong?””
He looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
I read the next line.
And my blood turned cold.
*The person I trusted most is the person I need to protect myself from.*
I stopped.
Because I knew exactly who I had trusted most.
My husband.
Julian saw my expression.
“Tiana?””
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I wondered if I had been wrong about one thing.
Maybe Julian wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.
Maybe he was only one chapter.
I flipped the letter over.
There was one final sentence.
A name.
A name written at the bottom.
A name I never expected.
*Brielle.*
I looked at my sister.
She gasped.
“I didn’t write that.””
Nobody moved.
Claire picked up the letter.
“That’s why we need to find out who did.””
I stared at Brielle.
Because now the question had changed.
It was no longer:
Who betrayed me?
May you like
The question was:
Who was pretending to be my sister all along?
