Chapter 5: My Sister’s Name on My Door
I don’t remember ending the call.
I don’t remember putting the phone down.
I only remember looking at Brielle.
My little sister.
The person whose birthday I never forgot.
The person I defended when our parents criticized her choices.
The person I welcomed into my home when she had nowhere else to go.
Her name was on my house.
Not mine.
Hers.
“Tell me it’s not true.””
My voice was quiet.
Brielle’s face collapsed.
“Tiana…”
“Tell me.””
She couldn’t.
That was the answer.
Julian stepped between us.
“I made the decision.””
I looked at him.
“You transferred my house to my sister.””
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
I stared at him.
“Protect everyone?””
I pointed at Brielle.
“By giving her what belonged to me?””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
He looked desperate.
“I needed collateral.””
“So you used our home.””
“Yes.””
“And then you put it under her name.””
He didn’t answer.
I turned toward Brielle.
“Why?””
She cried harder.
“I didn’t want this.””
“Then why did you sign?””
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
My voice cracked.
“But I didn’t betray you.””
Brielle covered her mouth.
“I thought he was going to lose everything.””
“You mean you thought you were going to lose everything.””
She looked at me.
“That’s not fair.””
I laughed quietly.
“Fair?””
I walked closer.
“Do you know what’s not fair?””
My eyes burned.
“Coming home every day and making you dinner while you were signing papers that could take my house away.””
“I didn’t know what I was signing.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
The words came out immediately.
She flinched.
“You’re not stupid.””
Silence.
“You’re not a child.””
I shook my head.
“You knew enough.””
Julian stepped forward.
“Stop attacking her.””
I looked at him.
And something inside me broke.
“You are defending her.””
“No, I’m not.””
“You are.””
I pointed at him.
“You spent months protecting her feelings while destroying mine.””
His face changed.
Because he knew it was true.
I walked upstairs.
Neither of them followed.
I went into my bedroom.
Our bedroom.
I opened the closet.
There were still pictures taped inside the door.
Little memories.
Our first vacation.
Our anniversary.
A picture of us holding the keys to this house.
I ripped that one down.
Not because I hated the memory.
Because I hated that it was real.
A knock came at the door.
Julian.
“Tiana.””
“Go away.””
“Please.””
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“What else?””
Silence.
“What else did you hide?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because I was learning that silence was always the beginning of something worse.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I looked toward the door.
“Find out what?””
He stepped inside.
His eyes were red.
“The house wasn’t the only thing.””
I felt numb.
“What now?””
He sat down slowly.
“After the transfer, Brielle became responsible for the property.””
I stared.
“She became responsible?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because the bank was threatening foreclosure.””
I closed my eyes.
“You almost lost our house.””
“Yes.””
“And you thought the solution was giving it to my pregnant sister?””
“I thought she could qualify.””
“Because she was younger.””
“Yes.””
“Because she had a cleaner record.””
He didn’t answer.
I understood.
They had built a plan.
Maybe not to hurt me.
Maybe not at first.
But every decision they made pushed me further away.
“What was the plan after?””
Julian looked confused.
“After what?””
“After you saved the house.””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
“What?””
“Tiana…”
“What was the plan?””
He looked away.
I stood.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You had one.””
He remained silent.
“You were going to leave.””
He whispered:
“I didn’t know.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“You did know.””
“I was confused.””
“You were preparing.””
I walked toward him.
“You were preparing a future where you weren’t married to me.””
“No.””
“Then why did Vanessa ask if I knew I wasn’t the real owner?””
He froze.
There it was.
The connection.
The missing piece.
I grabbed my phone and opened the message.
“Who is Vanessa really?””
Julian didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Finally, he whispered:
“She’s my sister.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“She’s my older sister.””
I stared at him.
“The investor?””
“Yes.””
“The person telling you to leave me?””
He looked down.
“She thought it was the only way.””
I felt cold.
Everyone had been making choices about my life.
Everyone except me.
I walked downstairs.
Brielle was still sitting on the sofa.
When she saw my face, she stood.
“Tiana…”
I held up my hand.
“I need you to answer something.””
She nodded slowly.
“What?””
“Did Julian ever tell you he planned to leave me?””
Her expression changed.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
Brielle started crying.
“I didn’t know when.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“After the baby was born.””
The room went silent.
After the baby was born.
Not after a mistake.
Not after confusion.
After a plan.
I looked at Julian.
The man I married.
The man I trusted.
The man who had been quietly building an exit door.
And then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from the lawyer.
An attachment.
I opened it.
A scanned document appeared.
My hands started shaking.
Because at the bottom of the page was my signature.
Except I had never signed it.
And underneath it was a handwritten note.
May you like
Three words.
“Thank you, Tiana.””
