Chapter 13: The Truth Julian Never Told Me

For a long time, I thought betrayal had a single moment.

A single decision.

A single person.

I thought if I could find the exact second someone chose to hurt me, I would finally understand everything.

But I was wrong.

Betrayal was not a moment.

It was a chain.

One secret leading to another.

One lie making room for the next.

And when the final piece fell into place, I realized the person who broke my heart first was not Marcus.

Not Brielle.

It was Julian.

Because Marcus could manipulate.

Brielle could hide.

But Julian was the one person who promised to protect me.

And he was the one person who knew exactly where to hurt me.

I looked at him across the room.

“Is it true?””

Nobody spoke.

My voice grew quieter.

“Did Marcus recruit you first?””

Julian looked down.

That was enough.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Julian.””

He sat slowly.

“I didn’t know what it would become.””

The words were so small.

So weak.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“When Marcus approached me, I thought he was helping.””

I almost laughed.

“Helping.””

The word had become meaningless.

“Explain.””

Julian took a deep breath.

“I told him I was struggling.””

“With money?””

“With everything.””

He looked around the room.

“With the marriage. The business pressure. Feeling like I was failing.””

My jaw tightened.

“So you told another man about our problems.””

“Yes.””

“Instead of telling your wife.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But this time, it didn’t surprise me.

“Keep going.””

Julian swallowed.

“Marcus said he knew people who could help me.””

“Help you do what?””

“Start over.””

The room became silent.

I felt my fingers go cold.

“Start over.””

I repeated it.

“With me gone?””

He didn’t answer.

I nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Julian looked at me.

“Tiana, I never wanted to destroy you.””

“But you were willing to lose me.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer was devastating because it was finally honest.

No excuses.

No stories.

No pretending.

Just the truth.

Marcus leaned against the wall.

“I told him the marriage was holding him back.””

I looked at him.

“And he believed you.””

Marcus smiled slightly.

“People believe what they already want to believe.””

That sentence hurt because it explained everything.

Julian wanted an escape.

Marcus simply showed him the door.

I looked at my husband.

“When did you decide?””

He frowned.

“Decide what?””

“To leave me.””

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

He was quiet.

Then:

“Before the affair.””

The words landed like a final blow.

Brielle gasped.

Even she hadn’t known.

I nodded slowly.

“Say it.””

Julian looked at me.

“I was thinking about leaving before I got involved with Brielle.””

My eyes burned.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I was finally hearing what I already knew.

“You were already gone.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You were standing in this house.””

I pointed around the room.

“You were sleeping next to me.””

“You were kissing me goodbye.””

“You were telling me you loved me.””

My voice cracked.

“But you were already gone.””

Julian looked devastated.

“I was confused.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were selfish.””

The word hurt him.

Good.

Because I had carried enough pain alone.

“I could have survived a divorce.””

His eyes lifted.

“I could have survived you falling out of love with me.””

I swallowed.

“But I will never forgive you for pretending.””

Julian started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

And that was the worst part.

I believed he was sorry.

But regret did not undo damage.

It only proved someone understood after it was too late.

Claire stepped forward.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She glanced at Julian.

“The documents Marcus used were not the original plan.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

She opened her file.

“Marcus created copies.””

She placed several pages on the table.

“These were the originals.””

I looked down.

My stomach dropped.

Because the original agreement was different.

The names were different.

The dates were different.

And one section had been removed from the final version.

“What is this?””

Claire pointed.

“This clause.””

I read it carefully.

My breath caught.

It stated that if the transfer happened without my consent, ownership would automatically return to me.

I looked up.

“He removed this.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“So legally…”

“You still have a claim.””

For the first time in weeks, something inside me shifted.

Not hope.

Not yet.

Something stronger.

Control.

Marcus noticed.

His expression changed.

“You think paperwork saves you?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I picked up the documents.

“I think the truth does.””

He laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

His smile faded.

“That you don’t know everything.””

The room went still.

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at Julian.

And Julian looked terrified.

“No.””

I whispered.

“What else?””

Marcus smiled.

“Ask your husband why he never told you about the night your father’s house was sold.””

I froze.

My father.

A memory flashed.

The old house.

The one I inherited after he passed.

The one I never discussed because it was emotional.

The one I thought was untouched.

I turned toward Julian.

“What does he mean?””

Julian didn’t answer.

May you like

And in that moment, I knew.

There was still one more betrayal.
