Chapter 12: The Sister I Thought I Knew

Brielle cried before she even spoke.

Not the quiet tears she had shed before.

Not the guilty apologies.

These were different.

These were the tears of someone watching a door close.

“Tiana, I swear.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t know what that letter means.””

I wanted to believe her.

I really did.

Because there was a part of me that still remembered being thirteen years old and braiding her hair before school.

There was a part of me that remembered holding her hand when she got her first heartbreak.

There was a part of me that still saw my little sister.

But another part of me remembered the ultrasound photo.

The lies.

The secrets.

The house.

The signature.

Trust was no longer something I could give freely.

It was something people had to earn.

“I need the truth.””

Brielle nodded.

“I’ll tell you anything.””

I looked at her.

“Everything.””

She wiped her face.

“Okay.””

The room became silent.

Even Marcus watched.

Because now the story was changing.

Brielle looked down.

“I met Julian before I moved in.””

My stomach tightened.

Julian immediately looked shocked.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“Not like that.””

I looked at him.

“You knew she knew you before?””

“No.””

Brielle spoke quickly.

“Not before the affair.””

I stared.

“Then explain.””

She took a breath.

“Months before I came to your house, I saw Julian at a coffee shop.””

Julian frowned.

“We talked for five minutes.””

“I know.””

Brielle looked ashamed.

“But I remembered him.””

The room felt colder.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because nothing happened.””

I looked at her.

“Nothing?””

She nodded.

“He helped me when I dropped my things.””

I almost laughed.

“So your relationship started with a coincidence.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

Her silence returned.

The silence that always meant there was more.

“Brielle.””

She started crying.

“Because I knew you would worry.””

I stared.

“You’re right.””

Her face fell.

“I would have.””

She nodded.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it mattered.

Claire watched carefully.

“What about the documents?””

Brielle looked confused.

“I don’t know anything about those.””

Marcus suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You really believe her?””

I looked at him.

“Why are you speaking?””

“Because she’s lying.””

Brielle’s face went pale.

“Stop.””

Marcus smiled.

“You don’t want them to know.””

“Know what?””

I looked between them.

Marcus continued.

“She wasn’t just a victim.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

“Tiana deserves the truth.””

I felt my heart race.

“What truth?””

Marcus walked closer.

“Ask your sister why she really moved in.””

Brielle whispered:

“Don’t.””

That one word changed everything.

I turned slowly.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

Because she knew.

The secret was finally here.

“I was going to tell you.””

My eyes closed.

Not again.

“Tell me now.””

She sat down.

“I was in debt.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I owed people money.””

“How much?””

She looked down.

“More than I could pay.””

I waited.

“And?””

“And Marcus knew.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Marcus.

“You knew?””

He smiled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because desperate people are easy to guide.””

Brielle looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know what he wanted at first.””

“What did he want?””

She looked at Julian.

Then at me.

“You.””

The answer made my stomach drop.

“Me?””

Brielle nodded.

“Marcus thought you were the only person standing between him and control of the company.””

I looked at Marcus.

“And you used my sister to get close.””

“Yes.””

Brielle cried.

“I didn’t know the whole plan.””

“But you knew something.””

She nodded.

“A little.””

That hurt.

Because “a little” was enough.

Enough to stay.

Enough to lie.

Enough to let me trust her.

I stood.

“I need to ask one question.””

Brielle looked up.

“Did you ever love me?””

Her face broke.

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“I did.””

I believed her.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because love had existed alongside betrayal.

People could love you and still hurt you.

People could care about you and still choose themselves.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You’re asking the wrong people questions.*

Then another message appeared.

*Your sister wasn’t the first person Marcus recruited.*

My breathing stopped.

A final message followed.

*The first person was your husband.*

I looked at Julian.

His face went white.

May you like

Because this time…

He wasn’t surprised.
