Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the document until the words stopped looking like words.

My signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

Except it wasn’t mine.

The room around me became distant.

I could hear Julian saying something.

I could hear Brielle crying.

But everything sounded like it was underwater.

I zoomed in on the page.

There it was.

A signature line.

“Tiana Brooks.””

The same name I had written thousands of times.

The same name on my driver’s license.

The same name I signed when I bought this house.

But the curve of the letters was wrong.

The pressure was wrong.

The final stroke was wrong.

Someone had copied me.

Someone had forged my signature.

I looked up.

“Who did this?””

Neither Julian nor Brielle spoke.

That silence was louder than any confession.

“Who did this?””

Julian stepped forward.

“Tiana…”

I held up the phone.

“Did you forge my signature?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Then who?””

He looked toward Brielle.

My heart sank.

“No.””

Brielle immediately started crying.

“I didn’t do it.””

“Then explain why your name is on my house.””

“I told you, I didn’t understand everything.””

“You understood enough.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what did you think you were signing?””

Her lips trembled.

“A protection agreement.””

I stared.

“For what?””

“For the baby.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You protected your baby by stealing my future?””

“No!””

Her voice broke.

“I thought Julian was trying to help us.””

I looked at Julian.

“You told her that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Julian.””

He finally spoke.

“I told her we needed a backup plan.””

“A backup plan.””

I repeated it.

“You had a backup plan for your wife?””

He looked ashamed.

“I was scared.””

“You were selfish.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Because he knew.

He knew there was no defense.

I walked into the kitchen.

I needed distance.

Air.

Anything.

The walls felt like they were closing in.

On the refrigerator was a photo Brielle and I took three months ago.

Her smiling.

Me smiling.

My hand resting on her pregnant belly.

I remembered that day.

She cried because she said she was grateful I was there.

I cried because I loved her.

I took the picture down.

My hands shook.

Not because I hated her.

Because I missed the person I thought she was.

A knock came at the front door.

None of us moved.

Another knock.

Julian looked confused.

“I’m not expecting anyone.””

I almost laughed.

Neither was I.

The door opened before anyone reached it.

A woman stepped inside.

She was tall, professionally dressed, and carried a leather folder.

Julian’s face turned pale.

“Vanessa.””

She looked around the room.

Her eyes landed on me.

“Tiana.””

I stared.

“You know who I am.””

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I almost smiled.

“Everyone says that.””

Vanessa ignored the comment.

She opened the folder.

“I came because there’s something you need to see.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

She looked at him.

“You should have told her.””

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Vanessa pulled out a document.

“This house transfer wasn’t the beginning.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She placed the paper on the table.

“The transfer was part of a larger agreement.””

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

There was a date.

A date from six months earlier.

Before the affair became obvious.

Before the ultrasound.

Before I knew anything.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked directly at Julian.

“Your husband planned to leave you before Brielle became pregnant.””

My breath caught.

I looked at Julian.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

“You were going to leave me?””

“Tiana…”

“When?””

He closed his eyes.

“Six months ago.””

The room spun.

Six months.

Before the pregnancy.

Before the baby.

Before he could blame a mistake.

He had already chosen.

“Why?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Because I wasn’t happy.””

I nodded slowly.

The pain was almost peaceful now.

Because the truth was finally complete.

“You weren’t happy.””

I looked around the house.

The house I built.

The marriage I fought for.

The life I protected.

“You could have left.””

He looked at me.

“You could have just left.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was afraid.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were comfortable.””

Silence.

I picked up the document again.

There was one final page.

A clause.

My eyes moved over the words.

Then stopped.

Because it wasn’t about the house.

It wasn’t about money.

It was about custody.

And the name listed as the intended guardian was not Julian.

Not Brielle.

Not me.

I looked up slowly.

“Who is this?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What?””

I turned the paper toward her.

“This name.””

Everyone looked down.

And Julian’s face went completely white.

Because the person named in the agreement was someone none of us expected.

May you like

Someone who had been part of this plan from the beginning.

And someone who was standing in my house right now.
