Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Plan
I used to believe betrayal had a face.
A person who hurt you.
A person you could point at.
A person you could hate.
But I learned something that night.
Sometimes betrayal wears many faces.
Sometimes it hides behind love.
Behind family.
Behind promises.
Behind the people who swear they are helping you.
“Say it again.””
Julian looked at me.
I needed to hear it.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
“It was Marcus.””
The name hit me.
Marcus.
My business partner.
My husband’s friend.
The man who had helped me expand my company two years earlier.
The man who called me “family.””
The man who hugged me when I won my biggest contract.
“No.””
Julian nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“Who is Marcus?””
I laughed.
Everyone was finally learning the truth at the same time.
“My business partner.””
Her expression changed.
“And he had access to your documents?””
“Yes.””
Julian looked at the floor.
“He was the one who suggested the house transfer.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
“He said it was temporary.””
“Why?””
“He said if we moved assets around, we could avoid losing everything.””
I looked at him.
“And you trusted him?””
Julian looked ashamed.
“I was desperate.””
I nodded.
“There it is.””
The word.
The excuse.
Desperate.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a story.
Nobody had considered the damage left behind.
I walked to the window.
“Why my business?””
Nobody answered.
I turned.
“Why my house?””
Still nothing.
“Why me?””
Julian stepped forward.
“Tiana…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I need someone to answer.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Maybe Marcus was trying to gain control.””
I looked at her.
“Control of what?””
She hesitated.
“Everything.””
The word sat in the air.
Everything.
My company.
My house.
My identity.
My marriage.
I looked at Julian.
“Did he know about Brielle?””
Julian froze.
That pause was enough.
“Did he?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know.””
I laughed.
“How many people were involved in destroying my life?””
Nobody answered.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, a photo.
I opened it.
My stomach dropped.
It was a picture of a document.
A contract.
A transfer agreement.
And at the bottom:
*Marcus Reed — Authorized Representative*
I looked closer.
The date was six months ago.
The same week Julian started acting distant.
The same week my house changed ownership.
The same week my business documents disappeared.
I looked up.
“He did this.””
Julian nodded.
“I think so.””
“You think?””
He looked frustrated.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I stared.
“But you knew enough.””
He closed his eyes.
That hurt because he couldn’t argue.
A knock came at the door.
Nobody moved.
Another knock.
Stronger this time.
Vanessa looked concerned.
“Are you expecting someone?””
“No.””
Julian walked toward the door.
I grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
He looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because everyone who comes through that door changes my life.””
The words surprised even me.
Because they were true.
The door opened slightly.
A voice came from outside.
“Tiana?””
My blood froze.
Marcus.
He stood there holding a folder.
Wearing the same confident smile I had seen a hundred times.
But now I noticed something different.
There was no surprise on his face.
No confusion.
He knew exactly what was happening.
“I heard there was some confusion.””
I stared at him.
“Confusion?””
He looked around the room.
At Julian.
At Vanessa.
At Brielle.
Then back at me.
“You found out.””
The way he said it wasn’t a question.
My hands curled into fists.
“You knew.””
Marcus sighed.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to.””
I almost couldn’t breathe.
“You were hoping?””
He stepped inside.
“Tiana, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You listen.””
I pointed at the folder in his hand.
“What is that?””
He looked down.
“Something that proves I was trying to help.””
I laughed.
“Help?””
“Yes.””
He placed the folder on the table.
“You think Julian is the villain.””
I looked at my husband.
Then back at Marcus.
“He cheated on me.””
“Yes.””
“He lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“He tried to leave me.””
Marcus nodded.
“But he was weak.””
I stared.
“And you?””
His smile faded.
“I was willing to do what needed to be done.””
The room became silent.
Because finally someone admitted it.
Someone finally stopped pretending.
I stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Marcus looked directly into my eyes.
And said:
“I made sure you couldn’t stop us.””
The words chilled me.
“Us?””
He smiled slightly.
Then glanced at Julian.
And I saw it.
The fear in my husband’s face.
The same fear from the beginning.
Because Julian wasn’t the mastermind.
He was just part of the plan.
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside was one final document.
He placed it on the table.
“Tiana, you should know something.””
I looked down.
The paper showed a company transfer.
My company.
My name.
But the new owner wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t Julian.
It wasn’t Brielle.
It was someone else.
Someone I trusted even more.
May you like
And at the bottom of the page was a signature.
Mine.
