Chapter 14: The Last Thing They Took From Me

My father always said a home was more than walls.

It was memory.

It was history.

It was proof that someone had existed.

After he passed, the old family house became the one thing I held onto.

Not because it was expensive.

It wasn’t.

The paint was old.

The floors creaked.

The kitchen cabinets were outdated.

But every corner held something.

My father’s laugh.

My childhood.

The last place I felt completely safe.

I turned to Julian.

“Tell me.””

His face was pale.

“Tiana…”

“Tell me.””

He sat down.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of what the truth would reveal.

“I didn’t sell it.””

I stared.

“Then what happened?””

He looked at the floor.

“I borrowed against it.””

My heart sank.

“No.””

“I was going to fix it.””

“You used my father’s house?””

He nodded.

“I needed money.””

I couldn’t speak.

The anger was too deep.

Too heavy.

“That house was not yours.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t know.””

Everyone became silent.

“That was the last thing my father left me.””

Julian looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Stop saying that.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Sorry is easy.””

I touched my chest.

“Living with what you did is the hard part.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“This is exactly why I told him you weren’t practical.””

I turned.

“What?””

“He was trying to save the situation.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You created the situation.””

His expression hardened.

“You think you’re innocent?””

The room went quiet.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You made everyone around you depend on you.””

I stared.

“You built a company. Bought property. Became successful.””

His voice became colder.

“And you never noticed how everyone else felt behind you.””

I almost laughed.

“So your excuse is jealousy?””

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“My excuse is that people like you always assume loyalty because you give people things.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because they were designed to hurt.

I looked around the room.

My sister.

My husband.

My former partner.

All people who had benefited from my trust.

Maybe Marcus was wrong about me.

But maybe he was right about one thing.

I had assumed love meant protection.

I had assumed loyalty came naturally.

I had assumed people would never take advantage of what I gave.

Claire interrupted.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“You’re talking too much.””

She smiled.

“No.””

She lifted her phone.

“I’m recording.””

His expression changed.

“You wouldn’t.””

“I already did.””

The room froze.

Claire continued.

“Everything you admitted tonight.””

Marcus’s confidence disappeared.

“You’re bluffing.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Tiana deserves the truth.””

Marcus stepped toward her.

Vanessa immediately moved between them.

“Don’t.””

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t protecting Marcus.

She was protecting Claire.

Marcus stopped.

Because he realized something.

He had lost control.

I looked at Julian.

“You knew about my father’s house.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Three months.

I closed my eyes.

Three months ago, he held me while I cried about missing my father.

Three months ago, he told me I was strong.

Three months ago, he had already taken something my father left me.

I walked toward the front door.

Everyone watched.

Julian stood.

“Where are you going?””

I grabbed my keys.

“Somewhere you can’t follow.””

“Tiana.””

I turned.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I spent weeks trying to understand why everyone betrayed me.””

I looked at him.

“But I finally understand.””

He stared.

“What?””

“I kept asking what was wrong with me.””

I shook my head.

“I was asking the wrong question.””

Nobody moved.

“The question is why I kept giving people chances after they showed me who they were.””

Julian’s eyes filled.

“Tiana…”

I opened the door.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice.

Older.

Shaking.

“Is this Tiana Brooks?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Evelyn Reed.””

My body went still.

Reed.

Marcus’s last name.

“I need to tell you something about my son.””

I looked back at Marcus.

He looked confused.

The woman continued.

“He has been hiding something from everyone.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“He didn’t start this plan six months ago.””

The room became silent.

“He started it years ago.””

I felt the blood leave my face.

“Why are you telling me this?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because I found the original documents.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What documents?””

The woman whispered:

“The ones proving Marcus never owned anything.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Her answer changed everything.

“Your company was never his target.””

Silence.

“He wanted something else.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

May you like

The woman’s voice dropped.

“He wanted your identity.””
