Chapter 10: The Woman Behind The Lies
I didn’t know what shocked me more.
The fact that Vanessa had lied.
Or the fact that somehow, even after everything Daniel had done, there was still another layer of deception waiting underneath.
I sat frozen with the phone pressed against my ear.
“Start from the beginning,” I said.
Michael was quiet for a moment.
Then he sighed.
“I met Vanessa seven years ago.””
I looked at Rachel.
She sat across from me, listening.
“She was charming,” Michael continued.
“Everyone loved her. She knew exactly what to say to make people trust her.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“She told me she wanted a family.””
“And you believed her?””
“Yes.””
His voice sounded tired.
“Because I loved her.””
That sentence hurt.
Not because I felt sorry for Vanessa.
Because I understood it.
Love made people believe impossible things.
“I married her,” Michael continued.
“And for years, I thought we had a normal marriage.””
“Until?””
“Until I noticed money disappearing.””
I froze.
“Money?””
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“From your accounts?””
“From our joint accounts.””
I looked at Rachel.
The pattern was becoming clear.
“Did she have affairs?””
Michael was silent.
Then:
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“How many?””
“I don’t know.””
The honesty in his voice was painful.
“She always had an explanation. Business trips. Friends. Emergencies.””
I closed my eyes.
Two marriages.
Two people being lied to.
Two lives destroyed by the same person.
“Why are you telling me this now?”” I asked.
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
“A file.””
My heart started racing.
“What kind of file?””
“One with names.””
I stood up.
“What names?””
“People she has been involved with.””
My grip tightened.
“How many?””
“Eight.””
The room went silent.
Eight.
Not one mistake.
Not one affair.
A pattern.
A system.
Michael continued.
“Daniel wasn’t the first person she targeted.””
The word made me uncomfortable.
Targeted.
Because that was exactly what it sounded like.
“She targeted him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because of money.””
I looked at the documents scattered across the table.
The accounts.
The transfers.
The forged signatures.
Everything suddenly connected.
“Michael, why would she target Daniel?””
“Because she knew about your inheritance.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“She knew you received money from your grandmother.””
My blood went cold.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
But I did.
Or at least I had a suspicion.
Daniel.
My husband.
The person who knew everything about my life.
The person who shared my private details with another woman.
I sat back down.
“She used him.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he help her?””
Michael’s answer was quiet.
“Because he thought he was using her too.””
That hurt because it was true.
Daniel wasn’t innocent.
He wasn’t some helpless victim.
He made choices.
He lied.
He betrayed me.
He just didn’t realize he was being betrayed too.
A knock came from the door.
Rachel looked toward the hallway.
“Are you expecting someone?””
I shook my head.
Then the knocking came again.
Harder.
I stood slowly.
“Who is it?””
A voice answered.
“Emma.””
I froze.
Daniel.
Rachel immediately stood.
“Don’t open it.””
But I walked toward the door.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I needed answers.
I opened it halfway.
Daniel stood there.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept.
“What do you want?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“No.””
“Emma, please.””
I almost closed the door.
Then I noticed something.
His hands were shaking.
“What happened?””
He looked behind him.
Then lowered his voice.
“Vanessa is gone.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She disappeared.””
I didn’t react.
“She took money.””
“Whose money?””
His face changed.
“Mine.””
I almost laughed.
“Now you understand.””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“She lied to me.””
I looked at him.
“Welcome to my world.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became colder.
“You lost a person you trusted for a few months.””
I pointed at myself.
“I lost years.””
He flinched.
For once, he didn’t argue.
“I found something,” he said.
“What?””
He handed me a folder.
I didn’t take it.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That Vanessa planned everything.””
I stared.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I expect you to believe the evidence.””
I took the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Bank transfers.
Messages.
And one document that made my blood run cold.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Victims.
At the bottom was a name.
Daniel Carter.
Next to it:
*Estimated Recovery: $250,000*
I looked up.
“She had a price for you.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Shame.
Real shame.
Not fear.
Not regret because he got caught.
Shame.
“She was never going to leave with me,” he whispered.
I looked at the list.
“No.””
I turned the page.
“She was going to leave with your money.””
Daniel sat down on the porch steps.
“I destroyed everything for someone who was using me.””
I stared at him.
“You destroyed everything because you wanted to.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
That was the first time he didn’t defend himself.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because I had spent so long waiting for him to understand.
Now he did.
And it changed nothing.
My phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
“Emma.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“You need to leave that house.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I found something else.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Vanessa didn’t disappear.””
I looked at Daniel.
“She’s hiding.””
“Where?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“She’s at your house.””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
“She has been there for the last hour.””
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because behind Daniel, inside the house…
A light turned on.
