Chapter 5: The Other Woman’s Confession

I didn’t move.

For a moment, I wondered if I had heard him correctly.

Vanessa knew.

Not suspected.

Not guessed.

Knew.

I stared at Daniel.

“You’re saying she knew about me?””

He nodded slowly.

My hands curled into fists.

“How long?””

“From the beginning.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

From the beginning.

I thought about all the nights I sat alone waiting for Daniel to come home.

All the times I asked if work was stressful.

All the times I defended him.

And somewhere else, another woman knew exactly who I was.

She knew I existed.

She knew I was waiting.

And she stayed anyway.

“How did she know?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She found my wedding photos online.””

I laughed softly.

“You mean she searched for me.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked into the house.

Daniel followed.

“Emma, listen.””

“No.””

I turned around.

“You need to listen.””

He stopped.

“I spent years believing the worst thing you did was cheat.””

My voice shook.

“But the worst thing was that you made me feel crazy.””

He looked down.

“I never wanted you to feel that way.””

“You did.””

I pointed toward the living room.

“You made me question myself.””

The nights I felt something was wrong.

The moments my instincts screamed at me.

He convinced me I was imagining things.

And now I knew.

I wasn’t.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I looked at the screen.

*Vanessa: We need to talk. You deserve the truth.*

I showed Daniel.

His face changed.

“You shouldn’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she’s trying to create more damage.””

I almost smiled.

“More damage?””

I walked away.

“I don’t think that’s possible.””

I replied.

*Where?*

The answer came immediately.

*A coffee shop near your house. One hour.*

Daniel tried to stop me.

“Emma.””

I grabbed my purse.

“Move.””

“You don’t know what she wants.””

I looked at him.

“Neither did I when you were sleeping with her.””

That ended the conversation.

An hour later, I sat across from Vanessa.

For the first time, I saw the woman who had been part of my nightmare.

She looked younger than me.

Nervous.

Not confident like I imagined.

She kept touching the edge of her coffee cup.

“Thank you for coming,” she said.

I stared at her.

“I’m not here to become your friend.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me why.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t know how to fix what I had done.””

I almost laughed.

“You don’t.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The fact that she admitted it surprised me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Sorry doesn’t erase six months.””

“No.””

“Sorry doesn’t give me back my trust.””

“I know.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel told me he was leaving you.””

I felt something cold move through me.

“When?””

“Before we started.””

I stared.

“He told you he was separated?””

“Yes.””

“Did you believe him?””

She hesitated.

“At first.””

“And later?””

She looked away.

“I found out the truth.””

“When?””

“Two months in.””

My stomach turned.

“And you stayed.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I thought he loved me.””

I looked outside the window.

There it was.

The same lie.

Different person.

Daniel made everyone believe they were special.

Until they weren’t.

“What did he tell you about me?””

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she said:

“He said you two were already over.””

I looked back at her.

“He said you were like roommates.””

My hands tightened around my cup.

The same story.

The same excuse men used when they wanted permission to betray someone.

“He said you didn’t understand him anymore.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s interesting.””

“What?””

“Because I spent years trying to understand him.””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“There’s something else.””

I waited.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a folder.

“I found this in his car.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Documents.””

“What kind?””

Her eyes met mine.

“The divorce papers.””

My heart stopped.

“He already filed?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

She pushed the folder toward me.

“He prepared them.””

I opened it.

Inside were papers with my name.

My marriage.

My life.

Prepared.

Waiting.

The date on the documents was three months earlier.

Before I found out.

Before the confrontation.

Before he apologized.

He had already decided.

I looked up.

“Why are you giving me this?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“He wasn’t choosing me over you.””

A pause.

“He was choosing himself over everyone.””

I looked at the papers.

For the first time, I saw the truth clearly.

Daniel didn’t destroy our marriage because he loved another woman.

He destroyed it because he believed he deserved whatever he wanted.

My phone rang.

It was Rachel.

I answered.

“Emma, you need to come back.””

“What happened?””

Her voice was tense.

“Someone broke into your house.””

I stood up immediately.

“What?””

“And Emma…”

“What?””

She hesitated.

“They weren’t looking for money.””

My heart raced.

“What were they looking for?””

May you like

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“They took the old phone.””
