Chapter 13: The Person Behind Everything

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

*“Vanessa was only the beginning. The person who planned everything is still free.””*

My fingers went cold.

After everything.

After the affairs.

The money.

The lies.

The betrayal.

There was still someone else.

Rachel noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I handed her my phone.

She read the message.

Her face changed.

“Emma…”

I looked around the room.

Everyone was exhausted.

Daniel looked broken.

Linda looked terrified.

Michael looked confused.

And for some reason, I believed the message.

Because whoever sent it knew something.

Something they shouldn’t have known.

The police officer approached me.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I showed him the message.

He studied it carefully.

“Do you know who sent this?””

“No.””

“Did you receive anything similar before?””

I thought about it.

The anonymous messages.

The warnings.

The old phone.

The account.

The way information appeared exactly when I needed it.

“Yes.””

I told him everything.

The officer wrote notes.

“Do you have any idea who could be behind this?””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Then I looked at Linda.

She started crying.

Finally, I looked at Michael.

Nobody had answers.

But one thing was clear.

Someone had been watching.

The next morning, I met with an investigator.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted the truth.

After everything I had lost, truth was the only thing nobody could take from me.

The investigator placed several documents on the table.

“Mrs. Carter, we reviewed the financial records.””

“And?””

He looked serious.

“Vanessa was involved.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“But she wasn’t the first person moving money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

He pointed to a document.

“This account was created eighteen months before Vanessa met your husband.””

I leaned forward.

“By who?””

He looked at me.

“Your husband.””

I frowned.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

He turned another page.

“It does when you look at the transfers.””

I stared.

The money moved through different accounts.

Small amounts.

Then larger amounts.

Hidden.

Careful.

“This wasn’t just Vanessa,” the investigator said.

“It was Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“But he said he was manipulated.””

“He was manipulated later.””

The words hit me.

Later.

Meaning before Vanessa.

Daniel had already started.

He wasn’t innocent before she arrived.

He was just caught by someone better at deception.

I left the meeting feeling empty.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just empty.

Because the hardest truth wasn’t discovering someone was terrible.

It was accepting that the person you loved had been becoming that person for years.

That evening, Daniel came to Rachel’s apartment.

I almost didn’t let him in.

But I did.

He stood there holding a folder.

“What now?””

He looked exhausted.

“I found something.””

I sighed.

“Daniel, I don’t know if I can handle another secret.””

“This isn’t a secret.””

He handed me the folder.

“It’s proof.””

I opened it.

Inside were emails.

Between Daniel and someone named Richard.

I froze.

Richard.

His father.

The man who supposedly stole the old phone.

I read the first message.

*Richard: You need to follow the plan.*

My eyes narrowed.

The plan.

I kept reading.

*Daniel: I don’t know if I can do this anymore.*

*Richard: You already started. Don’t pretend you’re innocent now.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Daniel sat down.

“My father knew.””

“Knew about what?””

“Everything.””

I stared.

“He knew about Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“The money?””

“Yes.””

“The house?””

Daniel nodded.

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because he helped create it.””

I couldn’t speak.

“My father always controlled me.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“He told me I was weak. That I deserved more. That I was wasting my life with you.””

I stared.

“And you believed him?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I hated feeling ordinary,” he continued.

“I looked at my friends. Their cars. Their houses. Their lifestyles.””

He swallowed.

“And I blamed everyone except myself.””

I said nothing.

“Then my father introduced me to people who could help me ‘move money.’”

My stomach turned.

“People?””

“Yes.””

“Criminals?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was too afraid to know.””

I looked at the documents.

“So Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.””

“No.””

“She was just another piece.””

“Yes.””

A terrible thought came to me.

“Why did your father take the phone?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because it had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

His face became serious.

“Proof that he planned everything.””

A message suddenly appeared on my phone.

From the same unknown number.

This time, there was a photo.

I opened it.

My breath stopped.

It was a picture of my wedding.

But the person standing in the background wasn’t a guest.

It was Richard.

Watching.

The caption underneath said:

*“Ask your husband why his father attended your wedding alone.””*

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

His face went pale.

“Emma…”

“Tell me.””

He stared at the picture.

Then whispered:

“My father wasn’t there to celebrate.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was there to choose you.””
