Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t cry.

Sometimes shock is too heavy for your body to process.

You just stand there.

Holding the proof that the life you trusted was built on lies.

The photograph shook in my hand.

The woman beside Daniel wasn’t someone random.

Her name was Claire.

I knew Claire.

She was a former coworker of mine.

Someone who came to our house for dinner.

Someone who complimented my wedding ring.

Someone who hugged me and said, “You’re lucky to have such a good husband.””

I turned toward Linda.

“Tell me this isn’t what I think it is.””

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I held up the picture.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re the victim.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Mistakes?””

I placed the photo on the table.

“You all keep using that word.””

Daniel cheated.

Linda hid it.

And somehow I was supposed to forgive because they called it a mistake.

“Where is Daniel?”” I asked.

Linda looked away.

“He’s at work.””

“Call him.””

She hesitated.

“Emma.””

“Call him.””

She picked up her phone.

Her hands were shaking.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Linda was always calm.

Always controlled.

The woman who could smile through family arguments.

The woman who could convince anyone everything was fine.

But now she looked afraid.

Daniel answered.

“Mom?””

His voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel,” I said.

The silence on the other end was immediate.

“Emma?””

“You left something behind.””

I heard him breathe.

“What?””

“The old phone.””

Another silence.

Then:

“Where did you find it?””

I closed my eyes.

That question told me everything.

“You knew exactly what I was talking about.””

“Emma, please don’t look through that.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because it will hurt you.””

I almost smiled.

“You’re worried about me being hurt now?””

“Emma—”

“How long?””

He didn’t answer.

“How long did you know about Claire?””

His voice became quiet.

“Claire was before Vanessa.””

My knees felt weak.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Three months.””

I looked at Linda.

She covered her mouth.

Like she was hearing it for the first time.

But I didn’t believe her anymore.

“You knew about Vanessa,” I said.

Daniel stayed silent.

“You knew your mother knew.””

Still silent.

“And now I find out there was someone before Vanessa.””

“Emma, I can explain.””

I laughed.

“Everyone always says that.””

I ended the call.

Then I opened the old phone.

The screen turned on immediately.

No password.

That hurt.

He had hidden an entire life.

But not well enough.

The first message I saw was from a year earlier.

*Claire: Are you ever going to tell her?*

Daniel’s reply:

*Daniel: Not yet. My mom says I need time.*

My heart stopped.

Not yet.

My mom says I need time.

I scrolled.

The messages continued.

Claire.

Vanessa.

Different women.

Different months.

Same Daniel.

Same excuses.

Then I found something that made my hands go numb.

A conversation between Daniel and Linda.

*Linda: You need to end this before Emma notices.*

*Daniel: I know.*

*Linda: She trusts you too much.*

I stared at those words.

She knew.

She knew everything.

Not just Vanessa.

Not just Claire.

Everything.

I looked up at Linda.

“You told him to hide it better.””

She started crying.

“No.””

I held up the phone.

“Don’t lie.””

She looked at the screen.

Her face collapsed.

“I was trying to save my family.””

I shook my head.

“No. You were trying to save your son from consequences.””

She sat down.

“I thought he would change.””

“How many times did you think that?””

She didn’t answer.

I walked toward the door.

This time, I didn’t hesitate.

But before I left, Linda said something that stopped me.

“Emma.””

I turned.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“There is one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

“What now?””

She wiped her tears.

“The reason Daniel was so confident you would forgive him…”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because he wasn’t afraid of losing you.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“What does that mean?””

Linda looked down.

“He had already made plans.””

I stared.

“Plans for what?””

She took a deep breath.

Then she said:

May you like

“Plans for the life he wanted after you were gone.””

Would you like Chapter 4 to reveal what Daniel had planned, or focus first on Emma confronting Vanessa?
