Chapter 8: The Secret I Was Never Supposed To Know
I stared at the message.
The words didn’t make sense.
Not immediately.
My brain refused to accept them.
A baby.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
A child.
The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
Rachel looked at me.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t answer.
I just stared at Daniel’s phone.
The same phone that had destroyed my marriage.
The same phone that had revealed every secret.
And now it had given me one more.
Daniel stopped walking.
The officer noticed.
“What is it?””
Nobody answered.
I picked up the phone.
My hands were shaking.
“Daniel.””
He turned.
The look on his face told me everything.
“You knew.””
His eyes filled with panic.
“Emma, wait.””
“No.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“Is there a baby?””
Silence.
That silence destroyed whatever hope I had left.
The officer looked at Daniel.
“Answer her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word felt like a physical blow.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
I didn’t move.
“How old?””
Daniel looked away.
“How old is the baby?””
“Four months.””
Four months.
I did the math.
Four months ago, he was still coming home to me.
Still lying beside me.
Still telling me he was tired from work.
I remembered that time.
I remembered making him soup when he had a cold.
I remembered buying him a birthday gift.
While another woman was carrying his child.
I laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“You’re unbelievable.””
“Emma…”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to say my name.””
He looked devastated.
Good.
For once, I wanted him to feel something close to what I felt.
“Does Vanessa know about me?””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Does the baby?””
His face changed.
“Emma…”
I shook my head.
“I’m asking a question.””
He looked down.
“She knows.””
Of course she knew.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
I walked outside.
I needed air.
I needed space.
I needed to be anywhere that didn’t contain another piece of my destroyed life.
Rachel followed me.
“Emma.””
“I’m fine.””
She looked at me.
“You’re not.””
I wiped my face.
“I should have known.””
“Stop.””
“I ignored everything.””
“No.””
“I defended him.””
“You loved him.””
I hated hearing that.
Because it was true.
Love had made me blind.
But love had not made him lie.
That was his choice.
The next morning, I received a call from a lawyer.
Daniel’s lawyer.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Thomas Reed. I represent your husband.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does he want?””
A pause.
Then:
“He wants to negotiate.””
I laughed.
“Negotiate what?””
“The house. The accounts. The separation.””
I looked out the window.
“He stole from me.””
“Mrs. Carter, I understand you are upset—”
“Upset?””
My voice sharpened.
“Your client had multiple affairs, hid money, transferred my home, and fathered a child with another woman.””
Silence.
The lawyer cleared his throat.
“I’m aware of the allegations.””
“Allegations?””
I smiled.
“Interesting word.””
“Mrs. Carter, Daniel wants to resolve this privately.””
“No.””
“Please consider—”
“No.””
I hung up.
An hour later, Vanessa called.
I almost ignored her.
But I answered.
“What?””
Her voice was quiet.
“I know you hate me.””
I said nothing.
“But I need to tell you something.””
“I don’t want anything from you.””
“I know.””
She took a breath.
“But I think you deserve to know the truth about the baby.””
My grip tightened.
“What truth?””
A long pause.
Then:
“The baby isn’t the reason Daniel stayed away from you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He knew about the pregnancy before he filed those papers.””
My stomach dropped.
“Filed?””
“Yes.””
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
“You said filed.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“He filed for divorce three months ago.””
I closed my eyes.
The room went quiet.
“He never told me.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Her answer came softly.
“Because he was waiting for the right time.””
I almost laughed.
“The right time?””
“Yes.””
“And when was that?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“After he secured everything.””
My heart sank.
Everything.
The house.
The money.
The accounts.
He wasn’t leaving because he fell in love.
He was leaving because he wanted to walk away with everything.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
She started crying.
“Because I found out he lied to me too.””
I said nothing.
“He told me he was leaving you because he loved me.””
A pause.
“But after everything happened, I realized he wasn’t building a life with me.””
“What was he doing?””
Her voice broke.
“He was building a life where nobody could question him.””
That night, I went through every document I had.
Bank statements.
Emails.
Property records.
Everything.
And then I found something.
A transfer.
Not from Daniel.
From me.
A large amount of money sent six months earlier.
The description said:
*Family Trust Contribution.*
But I never created a family trust.
I stared at the document.
Then I noticed the signature.
My signature.
Except it wasn’t mine.
Someone had forged my name.
I immediately called Rachel.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Someone signed documents using my name.””
Silence.
Then Rachel said:
“Emma…”
“What?””
“I just received an email.””
“From who?””
She hesitated.
“Your husband.””
My heart started pounding.
“What did he send?””
May you like
Her voice became quiet.
“A confession.””
