Chapter 14: The Truth About My Marriage

I couldn’t sleep.

Again.

It felt like my entire marriage had become a puzzle where every piece revealed something worse.

I kept looking at the wedding photo.

Richard standing in the background.

Watching.

Not smiling.

Not celebrating.

Watching.

The next morning, Daniel came back with more information.

He looked like someone who had finally accepted there was no way to protect himself anymore.

“My father wanted me to marry you.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He sat across from me.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds insane.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“Before we met, my father knew about your family.””

“My family?””

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“My grandmother?””

He nodded.

“She had money.””

The word sounded disgusting coming from him.

Money.

That was all they saw.

Not me.

Not my life.

Not my dreams.

Just numbers.

“My father found out your grandmother had left you the inheritance.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

I looked away.

Daniel continued.

“He told me to get close to you.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air disappeared.

“What?””

He looked ashamed.

“I swear, Emma, I didn’t plan it like that.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

He looked at me.

“I actually fell in love with you.””

I hated that my heart reacted.

Because a part of me still remembered the beginning.

The man who brought me coffee every morning.

The man who danced with me in the kitchen.

The man who made me believe I was chosen.

“But you still did it.””

“Yes.””

“You still lied.””

“Yes.””

“You still betrayed me.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I became the person my father wanted me to be.””

I stared at him.

“And I paid the price.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

For the first time, I believed he understood.

Not enough.

Never enough.

But he understood.

“Where is your father now?””

Daniel looked serious.

“Gone.””

“Gone where?””

“I don’t know.””

The investigator later confirmed Richard had disappeared.

His accounts were empty.

His phone was destroyed.

He had prepared for this.

But there was one thing he missed.

The evidence.

Because Richard had spent years controlling people.

And controlling people required records.

Emails.

Documents.

Proof.

Three days later, the investigator called.

“We found something.””

I met him at his office.

He placed a box on the table.

“Your husband’s father kept files.””

I opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Notes.

Names.

And then I saw something that made my hands shake.

A folder.

My name on it.

*EMMA CARTER*

I opened it.

Inside were details about me.

My childhood.

My family.

My inheritance.

My habits.

My relationship with Daniel.

It was like reading about myself written by a stranger.

“How long?””

The investigator looked at me.

“He started collecting information two years before your wedding.””

Two years.

Before I even knew something was wrong.

I turned the page.

There was one final document.

A handwritten note.

Richard’s handwriting.

*Daniel is emotional. He will resist at first. But love makes people predictable.*

My stomach tightened.

The next line was worse.

*If he truly loves her, he will hesitate. If he doesn’t, he will complete the task.*

I closed my eyes.

I understood.

Richard wasn’t testing whether Daniel could manipulate me.

He was testing whether Daniel still had a conscience.

And Daniel failed.

The investigator pointed to another page.

“There’s more.””

I looked.

A payment record.

To Vanessa.

Before she ever met Daniel.

My eyes widened.

“She was hired?””

“Yes.””

I felt numb.

Vanessa wasn’t just an affair.

She was part of a plan.

A plan designed years ago.

Then another document caught my attention.

A marriage contract.

Not ours.

Daniel’s father had prepared a document outlining what would happen if Daniel divorced me.

Assets.

Property.

Money.

Everything.

But at the bottom was something strange.

A handwritten note.

*The wife cannot know the truth until the final transfer is complete.*

Final transfer.

I looked at the investigator.

“What final transfer?””

He shook his head.

“We’re still investigating.””

That night, Daniel came to see me.

He looked different.

Not fixed.

Not forgiven.

But changed.

“I know you may never want me back.””

I stayed silent.

“But I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

He swallowed.

“My father didn’t just plan to take your money.””

I waited.

“He planned to destroy your reputation.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if you fought back, he needed people to believe you were unstable.””

I felt cold.

The anonymous messages.

The accusations.

The lies.

They were preparing a story.

A story where I was the problem.

Daniel handed me his phone.

“There’s a video.””

I watched.

It was Richard.

Recorded secretly.

He was speaking to someone.

A voice I recognized.

Linda.

My breath stopped.

Richard said:

“Once Emma signs, everything will belong to us.””

Linda’s voice answered:

“And Daniel?””

Richard laughed.

“Daniel thinks he’s the winner.””

A pause.

“He’s just another tool.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had fallen.

Because he finally understood.

He wasn’t the mastermind.

He was never the mastermind.

He was another victim.

But a victim who hurt me.

My phone rang.

The investigator.

I answered.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“Yes?””

“We found Richard.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“He’s trying to leave the country.””

I stood.

“Can you stop him?””

Another pause.

“We can.””

“Then why do you sound worried?””

The investigator’s voice became quiet.

“Because he isn’t running alone.””

I froze.

“Who is with him?””

The answer came.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“Your mother-in-law.””
