Chapter 9: The Confession Daniel Never Intended To Give Me

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat at Rachel’s kitchen table staring at the email.

A confession.

That word felt impossible.

Daniel confessing?

The man who spent years hiding everything?

The man who could look me in the eyes and lie?

I didn’t trust it.

People confess when they’re cornered.

Not always because they’re sorry.

Sometimes because they have nowhere left to run.

I opened the email.

The first line made my chest tighten.

*Emma, I know you will never forgive me.*

I almost closed it.

But I kept reading.

*I don’t expect you to understand why I did what I did.*

I stopped.

Why.

That word.

Always why.

Everyone wanted me to understand.

Nobody cared that I was the one who was hurt.

I continued.

*I was scared of losing everything.*

I whispered:

“You lost everything because of yourself.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Read it.””

I did.

*When we got married, I loved you. I want you to know that.*

My eyes burned.

Because once, I believed that.

*But somewhere along the way, I became someone who wanted more. More money. More freedom. More excitement.*

I swallowed.

*I convinced myself I deserved things I didn’t have.*

That was the closest thing to honesty I had heard from him.

*I started taking money because I believed I would pay it back. Then I kept doing it because stopping meant admitting what I had become.*

My hands tightened.

*The women were not because you weren’t enough. They were because I wasn’t.*

I stared at the screen.

A small part of me hated that those words still hurt.

Because I had spent months asking myself what I lacked.

What she had that I didn’t.

Why I wasn’t chosen.

But the truth was finally there.

It was never about me.

It was about him.

Then I reached the part that changed everything.

*There is something I never told you about the house.*

My breathing slowed.

*The transfer was not only to protect myself.*

I frowned.

What did that mean?

I kept reading.

*My father forced me to do it.*

I looked at Rachel.

“What?””

She leaned closer.

I continued.

*Dad found out about the money. He threatened to expose me unless I signed everything over.*

My stomach tightened.

Daniel’s father.

The man who took the phone.

The man who knew.

*I thought I could fix it before you found out.*

I laughed quietly.

“Fix it.””

Rachel shook her head.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And my hands froze.

*But there is one thing I never told anyone. Not Vanessa. Not Mom. Not even Dad.*

I stared.

What could possibly be worse?

*The baby is not mine.*

The room went silent.

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

The baby is not mine.

Rachel looked at me.

“What?””

I turned the laptop toward her.

She covered her mouth.

“No way.””

I kept reading.

*Vanessa told me the baby was mine because she knew I was planning to leave Emma. She used it to make sure I would choose her.*

My heart pounded.

*But I found out the truth two weeks ago. The timing doesn’t match. The baby belongs to someone else.*

I sat back.

Everything changed.

The affair.

The divorce.

The future he planned.

All of it.

Then one sentence appeared.

The sentence that made me realize Daniel’s entire world was collapsing.

*Vanessa knows I found out.*

I looked at the date.

Two weeks ago.

Before I discovered the affair.

Before the confrontation.

Before everything exploded.

I whispered:

“She knew.””

Rachel looked confused.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

I pointed at the screen.

“She knew Daniel knew.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emma Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Michael.””

I frowned.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m Vanessa’s husband.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Her husband?””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

“Vanessa is married?””

His voice was bitter.

“She never told Daniel.””

I stood up.

“Why are you calling me?””

Because somehow, deep down, I knew.

Whatever came next would change everything.

Michael spoke quietly.

“Because I think you and I have been victims of the same person.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What do you mean?””

His answer was simple.

“She didn’t just destroy your marriage.””

May you like

A pause.

“She planned to take both of ours.””
