Chapter 6: The Secret Daniel Was Desperate to Hide

I drove home faster than I ever had before.

Not because I was afraid of losing the old phone.

I was afraid of what was on it.

People don’t break into houses for things that don’t matter.

They break in for things they’re afraid someone will find.

When I arrived, police lights reflected across the driveway.

My chest tightened.

Our neighbors stood outside watching.

The same neighbors who had smiled at me when Daniel and I moved in.

The same people who thought we were the perfect couple.

Now they saw the truth.

A broken marriage.

A broken home.

A broken woman standing in the middle of it.

Rachel ran toward me.

“Are you okay?””

I nodded.

“Where’s Daniel?””

She frowned.

“He was here.””

“What?””

“He arrived before the police.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at the house.

“I don’t know.””

I walked inside.

The living room was a mess.

Drawers pulled open.

Cushions overturned.

But something was strange.

Only one place had been searched carefully.

The closet.

The exact place where the old phone had been hidden.

I looked at Rachel.

“Daniel did this.””

She shook her head.

“Emma, don’t jump to conclusions.””

“He knew where it was.””

A voice came from behind me.

“Because I put it there.””

I turned.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

For a second, I forgot how much I hated him.

Because he looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“You.””

He stepped forward.

“Emma, I can explain.””

I laughed.

“Of course you can.””

His face tightened.

“You need to leave.””

“No.””

I looked around.

“This is still my house.””

He lowered his voice.

“Not for long.””

The words made me freeze.

“What did you say?””

He realized his mistake.

Too late.

I walked closer.

“Not for long?””

Daniel looked away.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

I pulled out my phone.

“I’m calling the police again.””

His face changed.

“Wait.””

That single word told me everything.

He was afraid.

“Tell me.””

He ran his hands through his hair.

“The house was supposed to be sold.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I was going to move.””

“With Vanessa?””

Silence.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“You planned to sell our home?””

“I thought we were going to separate.””

“You thought?””

I stepped closer.

“You never told me.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

Because there was no good time.

There was never going to be a good time.

A police officer approached.

“Ma’am, we need to ask you some questions.””

Before I could answer, Daniel said:

“This is a misunderstanding.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The officer looked between us.

“Do you know who entered the house?””

I pointed at Daniel.

“I think he does.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Emma.””

I ignored him.

“Someone stole a phone from this house.””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“Do you know anything about that?””

Daniel stayed silent.

And then something happened.

Something I never expected.

Linda walked through the front door.

“Stop.””

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Like the past few days had aged her years.

“Linda?”” Daniel said.

She looked at her son.

“I can’t protect you anymore.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

“I know who took the phone.””

The room went silent.

The officer stepped forward.

“Who?””

Linda swallowed.

Then said:

“Daniel’s father.””

I blinked.

“What?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“No.””

Linda looked at him.

“Yes.””

The officer frowned.

“Why would his father take the phone?””

Linda looked at the floor.

“Because he knew what was on it.””

I felt a chill.

“What was on it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Mom, don’t.””

But she continued.

“Your husband has been hiding more than affairs.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Linda closed her eyes.

Then said the sentence that changed everything.

“The old phone didn’t just contain messages from other women.””

A pause.

“It contained proof that Daniel has been stealing from your marriage for years.””

The room went silent.

I stared at my husband.

“Stealing?””

Daniel looked like he might collapse.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

I saw fear on his face.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of being exposed.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Daniel Carter, I need you to explain exactly what she means.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked at the screen.

The name appeared.

*Vanessa.*

Daniel answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice came through loudly enough for all of us to hear.

“Daniel, you need to run.””

My blood turned cold.

The officer looked at him.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Because Emma found the account.””

Daniel froze.

I stared.

“What account?””

Vanessa went silent.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“The one with your name on it.””
