Chapter 12: The Betrayal Inside The Family

Nobody spoke.

Not even Daniel.

The silence was unbearable.

I looked at Linda.

The woman who brought me soup when I was sick.

The woman who hugged me on my wedding day.

The woman who called me the daughter she never had.

Now she stood in front of me like a stranger.

“Explain,” I said.

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Linda wiped her tears.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I am tired of people saying my name before they hurt me.””

She looked down.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She knew from the beginning.””

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“Knew what?””

Linda closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You knew?””

I watched his face.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t pretending.

He was genuinely shocked.

His mother had kept secrets from him too.

“She told me she could help you,” Linda whispered.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Help him?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Help him get what he deserved.””

My stomach turned.

“You convinced her?””

Linda shook her head.

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

And that was when I saw it.

The truth.

Fear.

“I had debts.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Linda started crying.

“I made investments years ago.””

“Bad ones?””

She nodded.

“I lost everything.””

I felt numb.

“So you helped her steal from us?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know how far she would go.””

Vanessa smiled.

“But you knew enough.””

Linda looked away.

The guilt on her face said everything.

I walked closer.

“How did you meet her?””

Linda swallowed.

“She contacted me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew about our family.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Linda looked at Daniel.

“She had been watching you.””

A chill ran through me.

“She researched us.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her in.””

“I thought she would help fix things.””

I stared.

“Fix things?””

Linda’s voice broke.

“She said she could make Daniel happy.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you believed her?””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Everyone always says that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You used me.””

She smiled.

“You used me first.””

The words hit him.

Because there was truth there.

Their entire relationship was built on selfishness.

Two people who thought they could manipulate each other.

And both lost.

I looked at Linda.

“Why did you beg me to forgive him?””

She cried harder.

“Because I knew everything was falling apart.””

“Not because you cared about me.””

She couldn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I walked downstairs.

I needed to leave.

I needed distance from these people.

But before I reached the door, Linda said:

“Emma.””

I stopped.

“There’s something else.””

I almost laughed.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Your grandmother’s inheritance…”

I turned.

“What about it?””

Linda looked terrified.

“Daniel didn’t take all of it.””

I frowned.

“Then who did?””

Nobody moved.

Then Linda whispered:

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

For the first time.

Real fear.

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What does she mean?””

Vanessa said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“You knew about my inheritance before you met Daniel.””

No response.

“You targeted him because of me.””

Still nothing.

Then Vanessa smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“You’re finally understanding.””

My stomach dropped.

“You planned all of this.””

She tilted her head.

“Not all of it.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Some parts were easier than I expected.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You’re insane.””

“No.””

She looked back at me.

“I’m careful.””

The confidence in her voice scared me.

Because it meant she still thought she had control.

Then the front door opened.

A man walked in.

Everyone froze.

Michael.

Vanessa’s husband.

He looked at her.

“You’re done.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“How did you find me?””

Michael held up a folder.

“Because I wasn’t looking for you.””

He looked at me.

“I was looking for the evidence.””

The police entered behind him.

Vanessa’s face finally changed.

Panic.

Michael turned toward the officers.

“She’s been moving money through multiple accounts.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“You can’t prove anything.””

Michael opened the folder.

“We can.””

He looked at her.

“You made one mistake.””

She stared.

“What?””

“You thought everyone you betrayed was too hurt to fight back.””

The officers approached.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And for a moment, I saw something unexpected.

Regret.

Not for what she did.

For losing.

As they led her away, my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

And my blood turned cold.

*“Vanessa was only the beginning. The person who planned everything is still free.””*
