Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Gun

The gas station went black.

I hit the concrete floor hard enough to knock the air from my lungs.

For one second, I could hear nothing but the ringing in my ears.

Then another gunshot exploded somewhere outside.

Daniel grabbed the back of my coat.

"Stay down!""

Glass shattered.

Someone screamed from the front of the station.

Ethan shouted, "Marcus!""

A third shot cracked through the darkness.

Daniel pulled me toward the rear hallway.

"Move!""

I crawled after him, palms scraping against the cold floor.

"What about Ethan?"" I whispered.

Daniel looked back.

"Ethan can take care of himself.""

That answer frightened me more than it reassured me.

We reached the service door.

Daniel pushed it open.

Cold rain hit my face.

We ran into the alley.

Behind us, another shot rang out.

Then Ethan shouted, "Claire!""

I turned.

He stood in the doorway of the gas station, one hand pressed against his shoulder.

Blood darkened his shirt.

My heart lurched.

"Ethan!""

Daniel caught my arm.

"Don't.""

"He got shot.""

"He'll live.""

"You don't know that.""

Daniel pulled me harder.

"Claire, if you stop now, you won't get another chance.""

We ran.

At the end of the alley, a sedan waited with its engine running.

Daniel opened the passenger door.

"Get in.""

I climbed inside.

He followed and slammed the door.

The car shot forward.

I looked back through the rear window.

Ethan had disappeared.

The gas station became a blur of rain and flashing lights.

My breathing wouldn't slow.

"Who fired the gun?""

Daniel kept his eyes on the road.

"Marcus.""

"Ethan said his name.""

"Because Ethan knows him.""

"You said Marcus was helping Ethan.""

"He was.""

"Then why shoot at him?""

Daniel was silent.

"Answer me.""

"He isn't helping Ethan anymore.""

I stared at him.

"What changed?""

"Marcus realized Ethan wasn't going to give him what he wanted.""

"What does he want?""

Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"The trust.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone wants the trust.""

"Because your father's trust contains something worth much more than the companies.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Daniel glanced at me.

"Access.""

"To what?""

"Accounts.""

"What accounts?""

"Accounts your father created decades ago.""

I stared at him.

"How much?""

"We don't know.""

"Guess.""

"Possibly more than a hundred million.""

I let out a breath.

"A hundred million?""

"Possibly more.""

I looked down at the folder resting on my lap.

For the first time, the documents inside felt heavier than paper.

"Why would my father hide that much money?""

"He wasn't hiding money.""

Daniel swallowed.

"He was hiding evidence.""

My head snapped toward him.

"Evidence of what?""

"Everything.""

"That's not an answer.""

"It is when you understand the scale.""

The car turned sharply onto a deserted side street.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Your father's companies weren't just shipping goods.""

"What were they doing?""

"Investigating them.""

"Investigating who?""

"The people behind the shell companies.""

I thought of Marcus.

Of Ethan.

Of Margaret.

And suddenly the pieces began to shift.

"My father was investigating his own business partners?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because millions disappeared.""

"How did they disappear?""

"Through fraudulent import invoices, false contracts, offshore transfers.""

"Who was responsible?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I looked at him.

"Marcus?""

"Among others.""

"Ethan?""

Daniel exhaled.

"Eventually.""

The word landed heavily.

I looked out the window.

"Ethan told me he was trying to recover stolen money.""

"That was partly true.""

"Partly?""

"He did recover some.""

I frowned.

"Then why steal from me?""

"Because once Ethan realized how much was there, he stopped caring about recovery.""

"He wanted control.""

"Yes.""

I looked at the folder.

"And Chloe?""

Daniel hesitated.

"She was leverage.""

"Against me?""

"Against you and the trust.""

I closed my eyes.

Everything Ethan had said suddenly sounded different.

I need a proper family.

Chloe can give me the child I deserve.

It had never been about love.

The pregnancy was a legal strategy.

Maybe Chloe didn't even know.

"Does Chloe know?""

"Not all of it.""

"How much does she know?""

"Enough to be afraid.""

I opened my eyes.

"You said Ethan can take care of himself.""

"Yes.""

"He took a bullet.""

"That wasn't the first time he's been shot at.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Six months ago, Marcus tried to kill him.""

"Why?""

"Because Ethan had stolen something from him.""

"What?""

Daniel reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

My pulse jumped.

"What is that?""

"Ethan's insurance.""

"Against Marcus?""

"Against everyone.""

I held out my hand.

Daniel didn't give it to me.

"Not here.""

"Why not?""

"Because the second we plug this into a computer, they'll know.""

"Who?""

"Every person whose name is inside.""

I stared at the tiny black drive.

"What is on it?""

"Recorded meetings.""

"With whom?""

"Marcus. Margaret. Ethan.""

My throat tightened.

"Together?""

"More than once.""

I remembered Margaret's silk robe.

Her cold smile.

Her certainty that Ethan would replace me.

"How long have they been planning this?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Seven years.""

The answer hit me harder than the gunshots.

"Since my wedding?""

"Before.""

I went still.

"What happened before my wedding?""

He didn't answer.

"Ethan said my father gave him a choice.""

"He did.""

"What was the choice?""

"Walk away with money.""

"And Ethan refused.""

"Yes.""

"Because he wanted the trust.""

Daniel nodded.

I looked at the rain.

"He could have left.""

"Yes.""

"And he married me anyway.""

"Yes.""

My voice dropped.

"I spent seven years believing I was the one who wasn't enough.""

Daniel's eyes softened.

"Claire.""

"Don't.""

I wiped my face angrily.

"I'm not crying.""

"I didn't say you were.""

The car slowed.

A deserted warehouse appeared ahead.

Daniel parked behind it.

"Why are we here?""

"Because nobody knows about this place.""

I looked at the building.

"You sure?""

"Your father owned it.""

Of course he did.

Nothing in my life seemed to exist without another layer beneath it.

We went inside.

The warehouse was enormous.

Stacks of old shipping crates lined the walls.

Daniel walked toward a metal staircase.

I followed.

At the top was a narrow office.

He unlocked it.

Inside stood an old desk.

A safe.

And a framed photograph.

My father.

My mother.

And me as a child.

I walked toward the photograph.

"I remember this day.""

Daniel said nothing.

I touched the glass.

"My dad took that picture at the ranch.""

"He came here afterward.""

"Why?""

"He was afraid.""

I turned.

"My father was afraid?""

"Of losing you.""

Daniel opened the safe.

Inside was a stack of files.

At the very top was a handwritten envelope.

*For Claire. Open only after Ethan betrays you.*

My heart stopped.

I took it.

The paper was yellowed around the edges.

My father's handwriting looked exactly as I remembered.

I opened the letter.

*Claire,*

*If you're reading this, then Ethan has finally shown you who he is.*

My vision blurred.

I continued.

*I wanted to tell you the truth years ago. Your mother begged me to wait. She believed knowing too much would put you in danger.*

I looked at Daniel.

"Why would knowing about money put me in danger?""

He didn't answer.

I read on.

*Ethan is not the person you should fear most.*

My blood ran cold.

I looked at the next sentence.

*The man behind him is Marcus Bell.*

I stopped.

There was a second page.

I turned it over.

*But Marcus is only a middleman.*

My fingers trembled.

The next line had been underlined twice.

*The person who arranged everything has been inside our family since before Ethan met you.*

I stared at the words.

Inside our family.

Margaret?

That seemed obvious.

But my father had written this years ago.

Before tonight.

Before the locks.

Before Chloe.

Before Ethan's betrayal became public.

I read the final paragraph.

*When the truth surfaces, find the person whose name appears on the original beneficiary records. That person knows why Ethan was brought into your life.*

A loud metallic bang came from downstairs.

Daniel immediately closed the safe.

"What was that?""

He moved toward the office door.

I followed.

"Who knows we're here?""

"No one.""

Another bang.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone was climbing the stairs.

Daniel reached beneath his jacket.

"You stay behind me.""

I backed up.

The footsteps stopped outside.

A man's voice came through the door.

"Daniel.""

I recognized it.

My heart froze.

Marcus.

The door handle began to turn.

Then Marcus spoke again.

"I know Claire is in there.""

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time since we'd met, he looked truly terrified.

Marcus continued.

"She deserves to know what her father did.""

The door opened.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

His suit was soaked with rain.

He wasn't holding a gun.

Instead, he held a single sheet of paper.

And at the bottom of that paper was a name.

My name.

Beside it was another.

A name I had never seen before.

Then Marcus smiled.

"Claire, your father didn't arrange your marriage.""

May you like

He lifted the paper.

"He arranged your entire life.""
