Chapter 4: The Original Signature

No one had heard the door open.

Nora backed away from the table.

Daniel looked at the envelope as if it were a bomb.

"Don't touch it.""

I stepped closer.

My name was written across the front.

Claire.

In my father's handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

I picked it up.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

*You were always supposed to know on your thirtieth birthday.*

My thirty-third birthday had passed six months earlier.

I read the next line.

*If you're reading this because Ethan has betrayed you, then the final safeguard has been triggered.*

My pulse raced.

Daniel said, "Your father prepared several letters.""

"Several?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because he didn't know how long Ethan could hide his intentions.""

I turned the page over.

There was another message.

*Go to the warehouse. Bring Daniel. Trust no one else.*

Nora folded her arms.

"At least your father had good taste in mystery novels.""

I almost smiled.

Almost.

We left ten minutes later.

Daniel drove.

The streets of downtown Houston were slick with rain.

No one spoke for several minutes.

Finally, I asked, "Why didn't my father tell me about the trust?""

Daniel gripped the steering wheel.

"Because he believed knowledge could be used against you.""

"By Ethan?""

"By everyone.""

We reached the warehouse.

It stood between two abandoned commercial buildings.

Daniel unlocked a side gate using an old key.

Inside, the air smelled of dust, oil, and wet concrete.

My father's old office was still there.

Daniel opened the door.

"Look behind the bookcase.""

We moved it.

A metal safe appeared in the wall.

I entered the combination written on the letter.

The lock clicked.

Inside was another folder.

A photograph.

And a recording device.

The photograph stopped me.

It showed Ethan meeting a man outside a hotel.

On the back, my father had written:

*Marcus Bell — intermediary.*

"Who is he?""

Daniel's face tightened.

"One of the men involved in your father's investigation.""

I pressed the recorder.

Static.

Then my father's voice.

Clear.

Steady.

"If Claire ever hears this, something has gone very wrong.""

I closed my eyes.

His voice filled the dark office.

"Ethan believes Claire depends on him. He is wrong.""

A second voice appeared.

Ethan's.

My body went cold.

"You promised the shares.""

My father's voice answered.

"They don't belong to you.""

"I've put seven years into this.""

"You married my daughter.""

"I love her.""

"You love what she controls.""

Silence.

Then Ethan spoke again.

"So what happens if she dies?""

I stopped breathing.

Daniel whispered, "Claire...""

My father's recording continued.

"That question is exactly why I created the safeguard.""

A crash sounded outside.

We turned.

The office door shook.

Someone hit it again.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"We have to go.""

"Wait.""

My father's recording was still playing.

"Claire, if Ethan tries to remove you from the property, the trust automatically transfers temporary operating authority to the person I designated.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Who?""

The recording paused.

Then my father said a name.

"Daniel Reed.""

Daniel shut his eyes.

I stared at him.

"You?""

"I didn't know.""

"You did.""

"No. Not until today.""

The door shook again.

Someone shouted from the warehouse.

"Claire!""

Ethan.

My husband.

Daniel swore.

"How did he find us?""

I looked at the recording.

Then the papers.

And suddenly I understood.

"Ethan didn't find us.""

"What?""

"He followed you.""

Daniel's expression changed.

The door burst open.

Two men entered.

Ethan stood behind them.

His face was no longer smug.

It was furious.

"Give me the folder.""

I held it against my chest.

"No.""

He stepped inside.

"You don't understand what's in there.""

"I understand enough.""

He looked at Daniel.

"You betrayed me.""

Daniel said, "You betrayed Claire.""

Ethan laughed.

"You think she can run these businesses?""

I answered before Daniel could.

"I don't need to run them.""

Ethan frowned.

"What?""

"I just need to own them.""

The confidence vanished from his face.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new text.

*Tell Daniel to open page 47.*

I flipped through the folder.

Page 47 contained one paragraph.

I read it.

Then looked at Ethan.

"You made one mistake.""

He stared.

"What?""

May you like

I smiled for the first time that night.

"You changed the locks before you checked who actually owned the house.""
