Chapter 5: The Woman Who Owned the House
Ethan stared at me.
For the first time since I had arrived home, he looked uncertain.
Margaret appeared behind him.
"Claire, stop this nonsense.""
I turned toward her.
"You told me I didn't belong here.""
"You don't.""
"According to whom?""
"According to Ethan.""
I held up the trust document.
"Ethan isn't the owner.""
Margaret's face tightened.
"You have no idea what you're holding.""
"I know exactly what I'm holding.""
I stepped forward.
"This property is held by my father's trust.""
Ethan interrupted.
"Temporary control was transferred to me years ago.""
I looked at page 47.
"Temporary control ends if the beneficiary is unlawfully removed from the property.""
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
Daniel stepped beside me.
"And you've documented the removal.""
Ethan glared.
"You're helping her?""
"I'm executing her father's instructions.""
Margaret looked at Ethan.
"Tell him that's not valid.""
"It is.""
Her voice cracked.
"Ethan.""
He ignored her.
"Claire, we can settle this privately.""
I laughed.
"You locked your wife outside in a storm.""
"I panicked.""
"You gave me $2,500.""
"I was trying to help.""
"You brought Chloe into our bedroom.""
Chloe appeared on the staircase.
Her hand rested on the railing.
"Ethan...""
He turned sharply.
"Go upstairs.""
She didn't move.
"I heard everything.""
Margaret snapped, "This is family business.""
Chloe looked at her.
"Is it?""
Nobody spoke.
Chloe slowly walked down.
"Ethan told me the house belonged to him.""
I looked at her.
"Did he?""
She swallowed.
"He said you were leaving tomorrow.""
"So you knew.""
"I knew he was married.""
My jaw tightened.
"Did you know he was stealing?""
She froze.
Ethan stepped toward her.
"Claire is manipulating you.""
"No," Chloe said quietly.
"She isn't.""
Everyone turned.
Chloe took a shaky breath.
"I found bank statements in Ethan's office.""
Ethan went pale.
"Chloe.""
"Don't.""
Her voice trembled.
"You told me the money was from your business.""
He said nothing.
She continued.
"Then I found emails between you and Margaret.""
Margaret's face went rigid.
"Ethan promised me he would make sure you were gone before the baby was born.""
I looked at Margaret.
She did not deny it.
"What did those emails say?""
Chloe hesitated.
"That once you were removed, Ethan would gain control of the trust.""
Daniel looked at me.
"That's likely the plan.""
A cold anger settled inside me.
Not loud.
Not frantic.
Cold.
Calculated.
I looked at Ethan.
"You weren't leaving me.""
He stayed silent.
"You were trying to take everything.""
"It's complicated.""
"No.""
I held up the folder.
"It's actually very simple.""
I took out my phone.
"I have recordings, documents, bank transfers, and witnesses.""
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"What do you want?""
I looked around the house.
At the foyer.
At the staircase.
At the family portraits.
Then back at him.
"The truth.""
"You'll get it.""
"All of it.""
He swallowed.
I added, "Starting with why my father believed you were dangerous.""
Margaret stepped forward.
"That old man never trusted Ethan.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She hesitated.
Then Ethan said, "Mom.""
The warning in his voice was unmistakable.
Margaret fell silent.
I noticed something else.
Her hand was trembling.
I walked into the foyer.
No one stopped me.
I set my suitcase down.
Then went directly to the study.
The door was unlocked.
I opened it.
Everything was exactly as I remembered.
Except the desk.
One drawer sat slightly open.
I pulled it.
Nothing.
Then I remembered the text.
False panel.
I ran my fingers along the bottom.
Clicked.
A thin section of wood lifted.
Inside was a second envelope.
I opened it.
A copy of a medical record fell out.
I read the name.
*Margaret Hale.*
I frowned.
The date was twenty-eight years earlier.
Then I read the next line.
*Biological mother: Margaret Hale.*
The infant's name was blacked out.
But another document underneath had been left visible.
It was Ethan's birth certificate.
And the mother's name was not Margaret.
I stared at the paper.
"Ethan...""
He stood in the doorway.
His expression told me everything.
He knew.
He had always known.
I slowly turned the certificate toward him.
"Who is your biological mother?""
Margaret whispered, "Claire, don't.""
May you like
But I was already reading the name.
And it was the last name I expected.
