Chapter 9: The Last Trap

The probate papers were filed before noon.

By one o'clock, my lawyer had already called.

"The petition claims Ethan has a marital property interest in the trust.""

"Does he?""

"No.""

"Then why file it?""

"Because they want to freeze everything while they fight.""

I sat in a conference room with Daniel, Nora, and the attorney my father had once trusted.

His name was Robert Mason.

He spread the documents across the table.

"The good news is your father's trust is strong.""

I looked at him.

"And the bad news?""

"The timing.""

"What timing?""

"If Chloe gives birth while the challenge is pending, Ethan may argue that the child qualifies under the succession clause.""

I felt sick.

"But the child hasn't done anything.""

"Exactly.""

Robert sighed.

"This isn't about the child.""

"It's about control.""

"Yes.""

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"Where?""

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Chloe was found.""

My heart jumped.

"Where?""

"At an abandoned property outside Austin.""

"Is she alive?""

"Yes.""

We drove for hours.

When we arrived, police were already there.

Chloe sat in the back of an ambulance, shaken but conscious.

I approached her.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

I sat beside her.

"You don't owe me an apology for what Ethan did.""

"I believed him.""

"So did I.""

She looked down.

"They wanted me to sign something.""

"What?""

"A statement saying the baby was Ethan's only biological heir.""

I stared.

"Did you sign?""

"No.""

She reached into her coat.

"I stole it first.""

She handed me a photograph.

The document contained a clause I'd never seen before.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Robert looked over my shoulder.

"What is it?""

I handed him the paper.

His face went still.

"This changes everything.""

"What?""

"The trust doesn't recognize an heir based on birth alone.""

"Then what does it require?""

He pointed to the next sentence.

"Legal acknowledgment by the trust beneficiary.""

I looked at Chloe.

"So I would have to recognize the child?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then Ethan has a problem.""

Daniel asked, "Why?""

I remembered my father's letter.

*Never surrender control voluntarily.*

I looked at the signatures on Ethan's documents.

Something felt wrong.

"Robert, check the signature on the succession clause.""

He did.

Then looked at me.

"What's wrong?""

"My father required three witnesses.""

"These have two.""

"Exactly.""

The document Ethan was using was invalid.

But there was something else.

The signature that looked like mine had been scanned.

Not handwritten.

A copy.

I stared at it.

"My signature was forged.""

Robert nodded.

"That's criminal.""

Ethan had not simply lied to me.

He had manufactured the legal foundation for stealing my inheritance.

We returned to Houston that night.

At the River Oaks house, police were waiting.

Margaret was gone.

Ethan was inside.

He came downstairs slowly when he saw me.

He looked exhausted.

"Claire.""

I said nothing.

Robert stepped forward.

"Ethan Hale, you're hereby notified that your attempted trust challenge is disputed.""

Ethan laughed weakly.

"You brought a lawyer.""

"I brought evidence.""

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

"You think you've won?""

"No.""

He frowned.

"I haven't won anything.""

"Then what are you doing here?""

I held up the forged document.

"Waiting for you to explain this.""

His face collapsed.

For a moment, there was nothing left in him but silence.

Then he whispered:

"Margaret did it.""

I laughed.

"Of course.""

"She threatened me.""

"With what?""

He looked toward the staircase.

"My birth.""

I stared.

He continued.

"She knew Evelyn had the original documents.""

"She knew your biological mother was alive.""

"Yes.""

"And she used that against you.""

He nodded.

I took a breath.

"Where is Margaret?""

Ethan looked at me.

"I don't know.""

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Margaret stood there.

She wore no coat.

No umbrella.

Just the same silk robe she had worn the night she threw me out.

In her hand was a small black pistol.

Police shouted.

She ignored them.

May you like

Her eyes locked onto mine.

"You should have stayed in the hotel.""
