Chapter 3: My Father's Trust
Nora and I stared at the door.
Daniel spoke again.
"Margaret has people watching the building.""
I stood.
"How do you know?""
"Because I used to be one of them.""
Nora grabbed my wrist.
"Don't open it yet.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"I need to talk to Claire alone.""
I looked through the peephole.
His suit was soaked.
He kept glancing toward the elevator.
I opened the door.
Nora immediately stood behind me.
Daniel stepped inside.
He looked at me for several seconds.
Then said, "Your father knew this would happen.""
I frowned.
"What would happen?""
"Your marriage.""
My skin prickled.
"My father died five years ago.""
"I know.""
"Then how could he know?""
Daniel placed a manila folder on the kitchen counter.
"Because he documented everything.""
I opened it.
The first page was a legal agreement.
My name.
My father's trust.
And Ethan's signature.
My hands went cold.
"What is this?""
Daniel pointed.
"Your father placed the Houston property, several investment accounts, and controlling shares in three companies into a protected trust.""
"Why didn't I know?""
"Because the trust became fully active only when certain conditions were met.""
"What conditions?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Infidelity wasn't one of them.""
I stared.
"Then what was?""
He hesitated.
"An attempt to remove you from the property without your consent.""
My heart began pounding.
"Ethan knew?""
"Your father told him.""
Nora stepped forward.
"Why would Ethan agree to that?""
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
"Because Ethan thought he could control the trust.""
I flipped through the documents.
There were signatures, bank statements, letters.
Then I saw something familiar.
My father's handwriting.
*Claire must never surrender control of the trust voluntarily.*
I whispered, "What did he know?""
Daniel sat down.
"Your father investigated Ethan.""
My throat tightened.
"Before we married?""
"Yes.""
"And he still let me marry him?""
"He tried to warn you.""
I looked up.
"When?""
Daniel's face fell.
"The night before your wedding.""
Memory flashed.
My father taking Ethan outside.
Ethan returning twenty minutes later furious.
I had asked what happened.
He told me they argued about business.
I had believed him.
Daniel continued.
"Your father discovered that Ethan had been moving money through shell companies.""
I stared at him.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"And you knew?""
"I found out later.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't have proof.""
I turned another page.
Bank transfers.
Millions of dollars.
Accounts I didn't recognize.
"Nora.""
She came closer.
"What's wrong?""
Daniel pointed at one line.
"That money comes from the companies your father left you.""
I felt dizzy.
"How much?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel.""
"Forty-six million dollars moved over seven years.""
The room went silent.
My husband had told me he was struggling.
He had complained about cash flow.
He had asked me to help him.
And all this time, money had been moving out of companies legally controlled by me.
"How?"" I whispered.
"Your signature.""
I looked up.
"My signature?""
"Ethan had you sign dozens of routine forms over the years.""
I remembered.
Quarterly filings.
Bank authorizations.
Business renewals.
Documents placed in front of me while I was cooking dinner or getting ready for bed.
"I never read them.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's what he counted on.""
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
*Check the study desk. Bottom drawer. False panel.*
I stared at it.
Nora whispered, "Same number?""
I nodded.
Daniel's face went pale.
"He found you.""
"Who?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead he said, "You need to leave.""
"Not until you tell me who sent the messages.""
"Claire, you don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
He stood abruptly.
"Your father's briefcase isn't just documents.""
"What is it?""
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Evidence.""
A car passed outside.
Its headlights swept across the apartment.
Daniel froze.
"Turn off the lights.""
Nora did.
We stood in darkness.
Then Daniel whispered:
"If Margaret and Ethan find that briefcase before you do, you won't just lose your house.""
"What will I lose?""
He looked at me.
"Everything your father spent his life protecting you from.""
My phone buzzed again.
This message contained only an address.
*2450 Travis Street. Midnight. Come alone.*
Nora reached for the phone.
"Absolutely not.""
Daniel stared at the address.
"I know this place.""
"Where is it?""
"It's one of your father's old warehouses.""
I looked at the clock.
11:42 PM.
"What happens at midnight?""
Daniel whispered the answer.
"Someone is supposed to hand you the original trust.""
Then the apartment lights suddenly came back on.
May you like
And Nora screamed.
Because someone had left a white envelope on the table while we were standing in darkness.
