Chapter 6: The Name on the Certificate

I looked at Ethan.

He didn't move.

The storm outside had weakened to a soft drizzle, but inside the house, the silence was suffocating.

I held up the birth certificate.

"Ethan Hale?""

He swallowed.

"My legal name is Ethan Hale.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Margaret stepped closer.

"Put that down.""

"Who is his biological mother?""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

For once, there was no cruelty in them.

Only fear.

Ethan said, "It doesn't matter.""

"It matters to me.""

"Why?""

"Because my father's documents were hidden in my own study, and they lead directly to your family.""

Daniel walked into the room.

He saw the certificate.

His face changed.

"You found it.""

I turned toward him.

"You knew?""

"Not the name.""

"Then what did you know?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Your father suspected Ethan wasn't Margaret's biological son.""

Margaret whispered, "He wasn't.""

Ethan closed his eyes.

The truth had finally entered the room.

I looked at Margaret.

"Who is his mother?""

She sat on the edge of the sofa.

"My sister.""

I frowned.

"You don't have a sister.""

"She died.""

"When?""

"Twenty-eight years ago.""

Margaret wiped her face.

"Her name was Evelyn.""

I stared at her.

"Evelyn who?""

She looked at me.

"Evelyn Hale.""

Daniel moved closer.

"And your father knew her.""

I couldn't breathe.

"My father?""

Margaret nodded.

"Evelyn was his business partner.""

The pieces didn't fit.

Then I saw another document.

A paternity acknowledgment.

My father's name was written across the bottom.

My hands began to shake.

"This says my father was involved in Ethan's birth.""

Margaret looked down.

"He wasn't his biological father.""

"Then why sign this?""

"Because Evelyn was dying.""

I looked at Ethan.

"You were adopted.""

He said nothing.

"By Margaret?""

"Yes.""

"And my father helped?""

"He arranged everything.""

"Why?""

Margaret looked toward the window.

"Because Evelyn had enemies.""

"What enemies?""

She finally looked at me.

"The same people who later targeted your father.""

Daniel's voice was low.

"The shell companies.""

Margaret nodded.

"Evelyn had discovered money laundering through several import businesses.""

My stomach turned.

"That's what my father investigated.""

"Yes.""

I stepped backward.

"So Ethan grew up around people who were stealing money.""

Margaret corrected me.

"Your father tried to keep Ethan away from them.""

"Then why did Ethan become one of them?""

Ethan finally spoke.

"Because I learned the truth too late.""

I stared.

He looked exhausted now.

Not smug.

Not confident.

Just broken.

"When I was twenty-two, I found the records.""

"What records?""

"The money.""

"Whose money?""

"My biological mother's.""

He pointed toward the folder.

"She had hidden everything before she died.""

I studied him.

"You knew about the fraud.""

"I knew pieces.""

"You took money from my companies.""

"I was trying to recover what was stolen.""

I laughed.

"Forty-six million dollars?""

His face tightened.

"I made mistakes.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You made a plan.""

Chloe stood near the hallway.

"Why did you need me?""

Everyone turned toward her.

Ethan looked at Chloe.

"What?""

"The baby.""

He said nothing.

"You told me Claire couldn't have children.""

My chest tightened.

"You knew about my medical records?""

Ethan looked away.

Chloe's voice cracked.

"You said the trust required a biological heir.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He answered slowly.

"The trust has a succession clause.""

Daniel interrupted.

"It does.""

I looked at him.

"Explain.""

"Your father included a provision that, if Claire voluntarily transferred control of the trust, a biological heir could eventually inherit certain voting rights.""

"But I didn't have children.""

Ethan nodded.

"That's why he needed Chloe.""

I looked at her stomach.

She pressed both hands over it.

"You weren't just replacing me.""

I whispered.

"You were trying to create your replacement.""

Chloe began crying.

Margaret stood.

"That's enough.""

"No.""

I faced her.

"Not yet.""

I stepped toward the desk.

There was one final page beneath the birth certificate.

A handwritten note from my father.

*The trust cannot be inherited by Ethan.*

I read the next line.

*Because Ethan is not my son.*

The room went silent.

Then I saw the final sentence.

*If Claire ever discovers the truth, she must find the woman I entrusted with the original evidence.*

A name followed.

It was unfamiliar.

But Daniel recognized it immediately.

His face went white.

"You can't be serious.""

"Who is she?""

May you like

He whispered:

"Your father's first wife.""
