Chapter 2: The Woman in the Car

The phone stopped ringing before anyone moved.

I stared through the doorway.

Margaret closed it.

"Good night, Claire.""

She started to shut the door.

I put my boot against it.

"No.""

"Get your foot out.""

"I want my father's briefcase.""

"You have no right to anything in this house tonight.""

"My legal documents are in there.""

Ethan came down two steps.

"Claire, go to a hotel.""

"You keep saying hotel like I'm a stranger.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"I'm exhausted.""

"So am I.""

"Not like this.""

"Then explain what Chloe was about to say.""

Silence.

Rain hammered the roof.

Finally, Ethan said, "There is nothing you need to worry about.""

I looked at him.

"You've already locked me out of my own home, announced that your mistress is pregnant, and offered me $2,500 like I'm an employee you fired.""

I laughed bitterly.

"I think I've earned the right to worry.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"You're embarrassing yourself.""

"No," I said.

"You're embarrassing yourselves.""

Ethan's face reddened.

"Claire—"

I reached for the door.

Margaret slammed it shut.

The wood struck my hand.

Pain shot through my fingers.

For one stunned second, nobody spoke.

Then I heard Chloe say upstairs, "Ethan, we have to do this tonight.""

My husband answered too quietly for me to hear.

I stepped off the porch.

Lightning split the sky.

I dragged my suitcase back to the car and threw it into the trunk.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

One message.

*You need to leave the property before they realize you found out.*

I froze.

Another message arrived.

*Do not call Ethan. Do not trust Margaret.*

I typed quickly.

*Who is this?*

The typing bubble appeared.

Then disappeared.

Nothing came.

I looked back at the house.

A shadow passed behind the second-floor curtains.

Then another.

Two people.

Chloe and Ethan.

My phone buzzed again.

*Your father didn't leave you what they told you he did.*

My breath caught.

My father had died five years earlier.

Everyone had always told me his estate was settled.

His business was sold.

His remaining properties divided.

I had received this house through his family trust after years of legal paperwork.

At least, that was what I believed.

I stared at the message.

*What did my father leave me?*

This time, the reply came immediately.

*Control.*

A single word.

My stomach twisted.

Control of what?

Before I could type again, headlights appeared at the end of the street.

A black SUV slowed as it passed my house.

It didn't stop.

But someone inside turned their head toward me.

I felt watched.

I got into my car and locked the doors.

I drove five blocks before pulling beneath the awning of a closed restaurant.

My hands were shaking.

I called my best friend, Nora.

She answered on the second ring.

"Claire?""

I tried to sound normal.

"Nora, can I stay with you tonight?""

There was a pause.

"Of course. What happened?""

"My husband changed the locks.""

"What?""

"He's with another woman.""

Nora went silent.

Then:

"You're serious.""

"She's pregnant.""

"Oh, Claire.""

I closed my eyes.

"I don't know what to do.""

"Come here. Now.""

I started the engine.

Then remembered the text.

*Do not trust Margaret.*

I didn't know the sender.

But I knew one thing.

Someone knew more about my marriage than I did.

At Nora's apartment, I sat wrapped in a blanket while she made coffee.

She placed the mug in front of me.

"Start at the beginning.""

I told her everything.

When I mentioned my father's briefcase, Nora's expression changed.

"Wait.""

"What?""

She grabbed her laptop.

"Your dad's company.""

"What about it?""

"His old import company didn't disappear.""

I frowned.

"I thought it was sold.""

Nora turned the screen toward me.

A corporate registry page was open.

She pointed.

"Look.""

My father's company still existed.

Active.

And listed beneath its ownership structure was a trust.

My name appeared beneath it.

I stared at the screen.

"That's impossible.""

"Your father was very deliberate with estate planning.""

"But Ethan manages the family businesses now.""

Nora shook her head.

"The filing says something else.""

I leaned closer.

"What?""

She enlarged the document.

"Your husband isn't the owner.""

My mouth went dry.

"Then who is?""

Before Nora could answer, there was a knock on her door.

Three slow knocks.

We both froze.

Another knock.

Nora whispered, "Were you expecting someone?""

"No.""

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

"Claire?""

I recognized it instantly.

It was Ethan's business partner.

Daniel Reed.

May you like

And he sounded terrified.

"Claire, don't open the door.""
