Chapter 5: The Name Beside Mine
Marcus held the paper between two fingers.
The name at the bottom looked unreal.
*Claire Bennett.*
Beside it was another name.
*Evelyn Hale.*
My breath caught.
"Evelyn?""
Marcus watched my reaction.
"You've heard that name before.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
That was a lie.
I'd never heard it from my family.
But I'd heard it tonight.
On my father's recording.
The name had existed in the edges of my memory for years, buried beneath phrases that had never made sense.
My father had once told me that some people were safer as ghosts.
I had thought he'd been talking about business.
Marcus stepped into the office.
Daniel immediately moved in front of me.
"Don't come any closer.""
Marcus gave him a tired smile.
"If I wanted her dead, Daniel, she wouldn't be standing there.""
"You already shot Ethan.""
"I shot at Ethan.""
"You hit him.""
"He'll survive.""
I stared at Marcus.
"You were trying to kill my husband?""
Marcus looked at me.
"No.""
He glanced at the paper in his hand.
"I was trying to stop him from taking something that belongs to you.""
I frowned.
"Then why does he think you're trying to kill him?""
"Because Ethan knows what happens if I reach you first.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Marcus, enough.""
Marcus ignored him.
He held the document toward me.
"Your father's original beneficiary records.""
I didn't move.
"What's Evelyn's name doing next to mine?""
"Because she was the first beneficiary.""
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
"The first?""
Marcus nodded.
"Before you.""
I looked at Daniel.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
My voice dropped.
"What was she a beneficiary of?""
"The trust.""
"And why did my father replace her with me?""
Marcus shook his head.
"He didn't.""
I stared.
"What?""
"He didn't replace her.""
"Then why is my name there?""
"Because you're both beneficiaries.""
Daniel finally spoke.
"Marcus, stop.""
"She deserves to know.""
He placed the paper on the desk.
"Your father created the trust for two women.""
I looked down.
There were dates beside each name.
Mine.
And Evelyn's.
But the date beside Evelyn's name was twenty-eight years earlier.
My stomach turned.
"What happened twenty-eight years ago?""
Marcus looked directly at me.
"Your father found out that Evelyn was carrying a child.""
I froze.
"Ethan.""
Marcus nodded.
"She was pregnant with him.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
"You said Evelyn was Ethan's biological mother.""
"She is.""
"But Margaret raised him.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Margaret took him.""
I felt a chill.
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn discovered what your father's business partners were doing.""
"What were they doing?""
"Moving money through the import network. Buying properties under false names. Using legitimate companies to hide illegal transfers.""
Daniel added quietly, "Evelyn found the records.""
Marcus nodded.
"She threatened to expose them.""
I looked at the documents.
"And my father?""
"He tried to protect her.""
"From Margaret?""
"From everyone.""
I shook my head.
"This still doesn't explain the trust.""
Marcus leaned against the desk.
"Your father knew Evelyn couldn't safely raise Ethan.""
"So he gave me the trust?""
"He gave both of you protection.""
"Protection from what?""
"From the people who wanted access to Ethan's inheritance.""
I stared.
"Ethan had an inheritance?""
"He was entitled to one through Evelyn.""
"But he couldn't access it.""
"No.""
"Because my father blocked him.""
"Because your father was trying to keep the money from the people controlling him.""
My skin prickled.
"Controlling Ethan?""
Marcus nodded.
"Ethan was approached when he was young.""
"By whom?""
"You already know.""
I said nothing.
"Margaret.""
Daniel looked at Marcus sharply.
"That's enough.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"You know I'm telling the truth.""
Daniel's silence confirmed it.
I took a slow breath.
"Why would Margaret raise him if she was part of this?""
"Because she wanted access to Evelyn's assets.""
"She couldn't access them.""
"Not directly.""
Marcus tapped the paper.
"That's why you matter.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
"Your father left the controlling interest in the trust to you.""
"Why?""
"Because you were the only person he believed could refuse the money.""
I almost laughed.
"He trusted me because I didn't know it existed?""
"He trusted you because you never asked him for anything.""
The words struck deep.
My father had always said I was the one person who could never be bought.
I had thought it was simply something fathers said.
Now I understood.
Marcus reached into his jacket.
Daniel immediately raised his hand.
"Don't.""
Marcus slowly pulled out another envelope.
He placed it beside the first.
"This is why Ethan married you.""
My chest tightened.
I opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Ethan and me on our wedding day.
I was smiling.
He was smiling.
Behind us stood my father.
But someone else had been standing off to the side.
A younger woman.
Blonde hair.
Sharp cheekbones.
A familiar expression.
Margaret.
I stared at the photograph.
"When was this taken?""
"The rehearsal dinner.""
"I've seen this.""
"No.""
Marcus pointed to the far edge.
"You've seen the cropped version.""
My fingers tightened around the photo.
There was another person beside Margaret.
A man.
His face had been cut out.
"Who is that?""
Marcus said, "The man who introduced Ethan to Margaret's network.""
Daniel suddenly stepped toward the desk.
"Marcus.""
"What?""
"Don't give her that.""
"Why?""
"Because once she knows his name, there is no going back.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Then I want his name.""
Marcus watched him for several seconds.
Then answered.
"Robert Hale.""
I frowned.
"Hale?""
"Evelyn's husband.""
My heart skipped.
"Evelyn was married?""
"Yes.""
"Then how is Ethan her child?""
"Robert was not Ethan's father.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"So my father knew Evelyn was married to another man, and still—"
"Your father loved Evelyn," Marcus said.
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
"You're saying my father had an affair?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel did.
"No.""
I turned toward him.
Daniel looked exhausted.
"Your father was not Ethan's biological father.""
I stared at him.
"Then who was?""
Marcus gave a bitter smile.
"You've been asking the wrong question.""
My hands went cold.
"What question should I ask?""
"Why did Robert Hale disappear?""
I frowned.
"What happened to him?""
Marcus glanced toward the window.
"He was found dead three months before Ethan was born.""
Silence.
"Accident?""
"No.""
My pulse raced.
"Murder?""
Marcus nodded.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who killed him?""
Neither man answered.
Then Marcus said:
"That's the part your father spent the rest of his life trying to prove.""
I sat down.
Everything I thought I knew about my family was collapsing.
My father had known Evelyn.
Evelyn had carried Ethan.
Margaret had raised him.
Robert Hale had died before Ethan was born.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it was my father's trust.
A trust designed to protect two beneficiaries.
Me.
And Evelyn.
I looked at Marcus.
"Where is Evelyn now?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"Closer than you think.""
My heart began pounding.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out a driver's license.
He placed it on the desk.
The photograph showed an older woman with silver hair.
The name beneath it was different.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
I knew those eyes.
I'd seen them before.
At charity events.
At business dinners.
In photographs that had always been filed away by my father's secretary.
She had been present at my father's funeral.
Standing in the back.
Watching me.
My voice became a whisper.
"Who is she?""
Marcus answered.
"Evelyn Hale.""
I stared at the license.
"She's alive.""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"Galveston.""
My chair scraped the floor.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Claire, wait.""
"I'm going to see her.""
"You don't know what she'll tell you.""
"I don't care.""
Marcus picked up the beneficiary document.
"There's one thing you should know first.""
I stopped.
"What?""
"Evelyn doesn't trust me.""
"Why?""
"Because she knows who helped Robert die.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"Who?""
Marcus looked toward the office door.
Then back at me.
"Your father never found the killer.""
I swallowed.
"Then who knows?""
Marcus's expression turned grim.
"The person who ordered it.""
"Who?""
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Marcus.""
But Marcus continued.
"The order didn't come from some distant criminal.""
He pointed toward the door.
"It came from someone standing in your house tonight.""
My blood went cold.
"Margaret?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
I stared at him.
"Then who?""
He lowered his voice.
"Ethan.""
I felt something inside me break.
"No.""
Marcus slid the photograph across the desk.
"Look at the date.""
I did.
The photograph had been taken three weeks before my wedding.
Ethan was standing beside Margaret.
And in his hand was a document.
At the bottom of that document was a signature I knew better than my own.
My father's.
But beside it was a second signature.
Ethan's.
And underneath both names were four words:
*Final beneficiary transfer.*
I looked up.
"What did Ethan transfer?""
Marcus took one step toward me.
"Not money.""
He pointed at my name.
"He transferred you.""
A cold silence filled the room.
Then my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
"Claire, don't go looking for Evelyn.""
My heart stopped.
"Who are you?""
The woman breathed shakily.
Then said:
May you like
"Because I'm Evelyn.""
The line went dead.
